The Monthly Meetup A Publication by Skyi Fkur Biopolymers Pvt. LTD

This document discusses biodegradable and compostable plastics. It explains that while all compostable plastics are biodegradable, not all biodegradable plastics are compostable. Compostable plastics must break down within a certain time frame at commercial composting facilities to be considered commercially compostable. The document then discusses how compostable straws made from Bio-Flex PLA compound are an effective environmentally friendly alternative to plastic straws in meeting the demands of consumers since plastic straw bans.

THE MONTHLY MEETUP

A PUBLICATION BY SKYi FKuR BIOPOLYMERS PVT. LTD

Volume 3 | October 2021

Biodegradable and Compostable Plastics….what’s the difference?

Plastic that is compostable is biodegradable, but not every plastic that is biodegradable is compostable.
Whereas biodegradable plastic may be engineered to biodegrade in soil or water, compostable plastic
refers to biodegradation into soil conditioning material (i.e., compost) under a certain set of conditions.
Compostable plastics degrade faster than biodegradable plastics. In order for a plastic to be labeled as
commercially “compostable”, it must able to be broken down by biological treatment at a commercial or
industrial composting facility. Composting utilizes microorganisms, heat, and humidity to yield carbon
dioxide, water, inorganic compounds, and biomass that is similar in characteristic to the rest of the
finished compost product. Decomposition of the compostable plastic leaves no toxic residue that would
adversely impact the ability of the finished compost to support plant growth. EN 13432, ASTM Standards
D6400 and D6868 & ISO 17088 outline the specifications that must be met to label a plastic as
commercially “compostable”.

Bio-Flex in Straw Application!

It’s too relaxing and soothing to sip the cold coffee or shakes or other cold beverages using a straw. But
this straw is also responsible for the pollution caused by plastics. Since the implementation of the single-
use plastic ban in India, consumers are demanding environment-friendly solutions to the use of straws.
People turned down the idea of using paper straws, as they are not user-friendly. They become soggy
after a certain while and are not water-resistant. Compostable straws made from ‘Bio-Flex’ PLA
Compound ‘F 5710’ have proved to be the most effective Environment-friendly solution to the plastic
straw. Bio-Flex F 5710 has an optimum balance of strength & elasticity that enables manufacturing plain,
bend as well as U-shaped straws on existing bending machines with minimal wastage. Being a
universally accepted product for any type of straw/ profile extrusion products, Bio-Flex F 5710 would
satisfy Price v/s Performance v/s Product Acceptance requirement.
