I Pledge On My Honor That I Have Not Given or Received Any Unauthorized Assistance On This Examination

This document contains instructions for Quiz 1 in CHME 5101. It includes: 1) An honor pledge that must be handwritten and signed on the first page. 2) Instructions to scan and upload the handwritten quiz solution to Canvas by the deadline. 3) Details on two problems - the first asks to determine the power output and input of a mini-OTEC power station, providing relevant data in tables. The second asks if a binary mixture forms an azeotrope at a given T, providing equations and parameter values to determine activity coefficients.

CHME 5101, Quiz 1

10/20/21, 5:45-7:10 pm US ET; upload solution to Canvas by 7:25 pm US ET

On the first page of your quiz, please handwrite and sign the following Honor Pledge:
I pledge on my honor that I have not given or received any unauthorized assistance on this examination.

Please scan your handwritten solution of your quiz using your phone as explained on your Syllabus (do not
just take a picture of your work with your phone), and upload your handwritten solution to Canvas through
the appropriate link, by the deadline above. I will only accept handwritten solutions.

Note every problem has an individual factor IF, according to your last name:
Ayejuyole = 0 Jennings = 5 Nukovic = 8 Pierre = 4
Eccles = 2 Lozoponi = 1 Paliganoff = 6

PROBLEM 1 (50 points)

A barge-mounted mini-OTEC (ocean thermal energy

conversion) power station is designed to produce power by
using the difference in temperature between the warm water
at the sea surface and the cold water at the bottom of the ocean. .
Consider a mini-OTEC power station that runs on an ammonia WT
Rankine-cycle power plant, as shown in the figure. Determine:
.
(a) The power output of the turbine, 𝑊̇! WP
(b) The power input to the pump, 𝑊̇"

Relevant data:
• Stream 2 is saturated vapor at T2 = 20 °C
• Stream 4 is saturated liquid at T3 = 10 °C
• We can assume that P1 = P2, and P3 = P4
• Both the turbine and the pump are adiabatic and have an isentropic efficiency of 𝜂 ! = 𝜂" = (80 + IF)%
#$
• The mass flow rate of ammonia is 𝑚̇ = &1 + %&) kg/s
• All ammonia thermo properties needed to solve this problem are summarized in the tables below

PROBLEM 2 (50 points)

The following data is available for a binary mixture of components (1) and (2) at T = 308.15 K in liquid-
vapor equilibrium:

• Saturation pressures of pure components: 𝑃%'() = 49.624 kPa ; 𝑃*'() = 85.265 kPa

• The following equations are valid to determine the activity coefficients of each component in the
liquid phase:
ln(𝛾% ) = 𝑥** [𝐴%* + 2(𝐴*% − 𝐴%* − 𝐶)𝑥% + 3𝐶𝑥%* ]

ln(𝛾* ) = 𝑥%* [𝐴*% + 2(𝐴%* − 𝐴*% − 𝐶)𝑥* + 3𝐶𝑥** ]

+, +,
With the following parameter values: 𝐴%* = −0.264 − &-&) ; 𝐴*% = −0.421 − &-&) ;
+,
𝐶 = 0.23 + &%&&)

• The liquid phase is in equilibrium with a vapor phase, which can be assumed to be an ideal gas

A system forms an azeotrope if x1 = y1 at any given T and P. Does this system form an azeotrope at T =
308.15 K? If so, what is the composition x1 = y1 of the azeotrope?
