555 Timer Quiz Review: Procedure

This document provides a review of 555 timer circuits including calculating the period, time high, frequency, and duty cycle of four circuits. It then asks for the resistor values to achieve given frequencies and duty cycles but the response only fully solves one example due to the responder's limited time.

555 Timer Quiz Review

Procedure
Determine the Period, Time High, Frequency, and Duty-Cycle for the circuits below:
1.

Period:
T = 0.693 (Ra + 2Rb)C
T = 0.693 (120 + 2(330)) 0.47
T = 254.054 ms

Time High:
t high = 0.693(Ra+Rb)C
t high = 0.693(120+330)0.47
t high = 146.57ms

Frequency:
F = 1/0.693(Ra+2Rb)C
F = 1/0.693(120+2(330))0.47
F = 0.0039 Hz

F = 3.9 mHz

Duty-Cycle:
DC = t high/T x 100%
DC = (146.57/254.054) x 100
DC = 57.69%

2.

Period:
T = 0.693 (Ra + 2Rb)C
T = 0.693 (5000+2(3000))0.47
T = 3582.81 ms

Time High:
t high = 0.693(Ra+Rb)C
t high = 0.693(5000+3000)0.47
t high = 2605.68 ms

Frequency:
F = 1/0.693(Ra+2Rb)C

F = 1/0.693(5000+2(3000))0.47
F = 0.00027911 Hz
F = 279.11 μHz

Duty-Cycle:
DC = t high/T x 100%
DC = 2605.68/3582.81 x 100
DC = 72.73%

3.

Period:
T = 0.693 (Ra + 2Rb)C
T = 0.693 (1000+2(3000))6.2
T = 30076.2 ms

Time High:
t high = 0.693(Ra+Rb)C
t high = 0.693(1000+3000)6.2
t high = 17186.4 ms

Frequency:
F = 1/0.693(Ra+2Rb)C
F = 1/0.693(1000+2(3000))6.2
F = 0.00003324 Hz
F = 33.24 μHz

Duty-Cycle:
DC = t high/T x 100%
DC = 17186.4/30076.2 x 100
DC = 57.14%

4.

Period:
T = 0.693 (Ra + 2Rb)C
T = 0.693 (1000+2(450))4.2
T = 5530.14 ms

Time High:
t high = 0.693(Ra+Rb)C
t high = 0.693(1000+450)4.2

Digital Electronics 1.2.5 The 555 Timer Quiz Review – Page 4
t high = 4220.37 ms

Frequency:
F = 1/0.693(Ra+2Rb)C
F = 1/0.693(1000+2(450))4.2
F = 0.00018082 Hz
F = 180.82 μHz

Duty-Cycle:
DC = t high/T x 100%
DC = 4220.37/5530.14 x 100
DC = 76.32%

Determine the value of the resistors you would need to get the given frequency and duty
cycle.

5. If the frequency is 12.5 Hz and the Duty Cycle is 82%, what would be the values
of R1 and R2?
Frequency:

Digital Electronics 1.2.5 The 555 Timer Quiz Review – Page 5
T = 1/f ---- 1/12.5 Hz = 0.08 Hz ---- 80000 μHz
T = 0.693 (Ra + 2Rb)0.47 = 80000 μHz
Ra + 2Rb = 80000/0.693(0.47) = 245617.27
Ra + 2Rb = 245617.27

DC:
DC = (Ra+Rb)/(Ra+2Rb) x 100% = 82%
(Ra+Rb)/(Ra+2Rb) = 0.87
Ra + Rb = 0.87 (Ra+2Rb)
Ra + Rb = 0.87 x Ra + 1.74 x Rb
0.13 x Ra = 0.74 x Rb
Ra = 5.69 x Rb

Ra + 2Rb = 245617.27
5.69 x Rb + 2Rb = 245617.27
7.69 Rb = 245617.27
Rb = 31939.83

Ra + 2Rb = 245617.27
Ra + 2(31939.83) = 245617.27
Ra + 63879.66 = 245617.27
Ra = 3.85?
Obviously converting mistakes.
6. If the frequency is 125 Hz and the Duty Cycle is 55%, what would be the values
of R1 and R2?
Same as above but different values sorry i'm short on time because of the drama
tech team schedule. I'm in the team and we meet up very late every night starting
yesterday to prepare for the upcoming Whitman play and I have almost no time
for HW after. I understand the topic but I don’t have time for the rest of these
problems sorry again.
