PASS COVERAGE TERMINOLOGY
Fox the Post: A technique used by the safety when his #2 has no chance of
going vertical in Quarters.
Rock n Roll: A technique where the post safety takes motion WR man to
man and the other DB runs the post.
Trade: Adjustment where middle #3 dropper replaces a blitzer and
the blitzer drops off middle #3
SCIF 2: Zone pressure coverage responsibility where the defender
must carry final #2 vertical for 10-12 yds. Anticipate and see
any new #2 coming to the flat.
Middle 3: Zone pressure coverage responsibility where the defender
will play the inside zone determined by the final #3.
Hammer 2: Technique of the pass defender where he relates to the
widest of 2 on #3.
Vertical hook 3: zone coverage responsibility where the defender carries the
fiNAL 3 to the safety
Cloud: A hard cover 2 corner, the call is made any time there is 1 WR
on air.
Vertical Hook 2: Zone coverage responsibility where the defender carries the
final #2 to the safety.
Buzz 7: A zone coverage technique where he defender plays fast to
the “flat” and “7” route area.
Combo: a man coverage technique with a tight split on wr’s defender
can combo. Inside m/m defender takes 1st in coming route and
outside m/m defender takes 1st out.
Trail Technique: A man coverage technique where defenders will collision
and disrupt the routes of the wr’s, and then assume inside and
underneath position on all routes.
Viking: A man coverage adjustment where the corner on a one
receiver side can play trail technique because he has safety
help over the top.
Dallas: A man coverage technique between two defensive backs
playing “in and out” on a slot receiver.
Funnel: A man coverage technique between two defensive backs
playing “in and out” on a Z or X receiver.
Tulsa: A man coverage technique between two defenders playing “in
and out” on a te.
PASS COVERAGE TERMINOLOGY
Lock: Adjustment where defensive back runs with all motion with
no “rock n roll” help from the safety.
Squeeze: A zone coverage technique where the corner plays the flat
from an inside leverage position on #1. The deep half safety
plays #1 vertical.
Basic Distribution: Creates three receivers to the strong side and two receivers
to the weak side.
Flow Distribution: Both backs moving to create 4 receivers to the strong side of
the formation.
Webb Distribution: Both backs moving to create 3 receivers to the weak side of
the formation.
Curl Flat: A zone coverage technique by defenders to hold the curl zone
area, the “7” route area and break up on any “flat” route.
Hook Curl: A zone coverage technique where the defender drops 10-12
yards in depth to a landmark and is alert to the qb’s
intentions.
Outside Man: A man coverage technique where the defender holds an
outside in leverage position on receiver throughout the route
Inside Man: A man coverage technique where the defender has no help in
the middle of the field, the defender must deny the inside
release.
Plaster: A call alerting the pass defenders that the QB is scrambling.
Defenders should match up to the deepest receiver in their
zone.
Press: A coverage technique used by the corner to force the receiver
to flatten his release at the L.O.S.
Hug Rush: An aggressive rush used by a linebacker or secondary
defender with man to man coverage responsibilities when
your man blocks or run fakes.
Dividers: Landmarks used by cornerbacks to align inside or outside the
receiver in zone to best use his help in order best use his help
in coverage.
Bone: A term used to describe a defensive rusher disrupting a backs
release in pass rush.
Tits: a term used to describe a defensive rusher disrupting a te’s
release in pass rush.
PASS COVERAGE TERMINOLOGY
Blanket: Coverage used on the last play of the game from the +15 to
+30.
Packer: Pack cover 2 vs. trips with cornerback playing man to man on
#1 to the trips side. Everyone else playing cover 2 with no
defenders inside #1.
Screw: Adjustment made in quarters where OLB align outside the #2
receiver.
