UofR-ENEL280 - Midterm Exam - Solution

The document is a midterm exam solution for an electric circuits course. It contains solutions to 3 questions involving circuit analysis techniques like source transformations, nodal analysis, mesh analysis, and superposition. Question 1 involves using source transformations and nodal analysis to find the current i0. Question 2 uses superposition to find the voltage v and the power dissipated in a 10 ohm resistor. Question 3 uses mesh analysis and source transformations to verify each other in finding the current i0 in another circuit. The techniques are applied to various RC circuits depicted in figures 1-3 to solve for unknown currents and voltages.

Midterm Exam Solution
Electric circuits – Midterm Exam Solution

Q1 (8 marks)

Fig. 1.
a) Use source transformations to find the current i0 in the circuit shown in Fig. 1.
b) Verify your solution of part (a) by using the Nodal analysis to find i0.
Note: Maintain the same direction of the current i0 during your solution for part a and b.

Electric circuits – Midterm Exam Solution

Q1 - Solution
A- Using source transformation:

𝑉𝑆 = 𝐼𝑃 × 330Ω
𝑉𝑆 = 0.025A × 330Ω = 8.25 V 𝑉𝑆 = 𝐼𝑃 × 270Ω
𝑉𝑆 = 0.025A × 270Ω = 6.75 V

Q1 - Solution
B- Using Nodal analysis:

Apply KCL at node 1:

v2 – v1
-

Rearranging the above equation results in: v1 – 0.6875 v2 = -2.578 ------(1)

Apply KCL at node 2:

Rearranging the above equation results in: -v1 +1.556v2 = 3.75 ------(2)
Solving equations 1 & 2 results in:

v1

- 2Ω in series with 12 Ω and their equivalent Req 1 = 12 + 2 = 14 Ω.

i1
- Req 1 (of 14 Ω) // 10 Ω

Q 2 - Solution
- 4 A source is active alone:
Req 1 = 10/3 Ω

v2
Req 2 = 16/3 Ω

- 5Ω in parallel with 10 Ω results in: - v2 +

Req 1 = (10 × 5)/(10 + 5) = 50/15 = 10/3 Ω.
10/3 Ω
- Req 1 (of 10/3 Ω) in series with 2 Ω, results in:
Req 2 = 10/3 + 2 = 16/3 Ω
- Req 3 (of 16/3 Ω) // 12 Ω results in:
Req 3= 48/13 Ω
- Vx = 4 × 48/13 = 192/13 V = V12Ω
- Therefore, we can use the voltage divider rule between 2Ω and
10/3Ω to calculate v2
v2 = [(-192/13) × (10/3)]/((10/3)+(16/3)) = - 9.231 V
vx
Finally v = v1 + v2 = 59.231 + (-9.231) = 50 V 2/3
