Quadratic Logarithmic Equations

This document contains examples and exercises involving quadratic logarithmic equations and exponential equations using logarithms. Some key examples are solved, such as log52 x + log5 x 5 - 24 = 0, which has solutions of 5 and 125. Homework problems include solving equations like log24 x - log4 x - 2 = 0. Additional "For HL only" problems are provided for higher-level students.

Quadratic logarithmic equations

Example: log24 x  log4 x  3  0

Let y  log 5 x, then

y 2  5 y  24  0.
Solving this equation we get two roots: y=3 and y=-1.
Case 1: y  3
log5 x  3, log4 x  log4 64, x  64.
Case 2: y  1
log 4 x  1 , log4 x  log4 41 , x  0.25

Answer: 64, 0.25

1. log32 x  log3 x  6  0 3. log 82 x  2 log 8 x  0

2. lg 2 5 x  3 lg 5 x  4 4. log32 ( x 2  2 x) 1  0
