TSP Fertilizer

Triple superphosphate (TSP) is made by reacting wet-process phosphoric acid with phosphate rock and typically contains 46% P2O5. Over 90% of the phosphorus in TSP is water soluble and readily available for plant uptake. TSP is used as a fertilizer on its own or blended with nitrogen and potassium fertilizers. It was widely used in agriculture in the 20th century due to its high phosphorus content and solubility, though its use has declined due to higher nutrient content and lower production costs of ammonium phosphate fertilizers.

TRIPLE SUPERPHOSPHATE

(TSP)
How it is Made ?
TSP is made by reacting wet-process
phosphoric acid with phosphate rock.
Typically it contains 46% P2O5.TSP is produced
in granular and non-granular form and is used
both in fertilizer blends (with potassium and
nitrogen fertilizers) and by itself.

Non-Agricultural Uses
❑ Monocalcium phosphate is an important
ingredient in baking powder.

❑ Monocalcium phosphate is commonly added

to animal diets as an important mineral
supplement of both P and Ca.
Reasons for Declining of TSP
❑ The popularity of TSP has declined because the total nutrient
content (N + P₂O₅) is lower than ammonium phosphate
fertilizers such as monoammonium phosphate, which by
comparison contains 11% N and 52% phosphorous pentoxide
(P₂O₅).

❑ Costs of producing TSP can be higher than ammonium

phosphates, making the economics for TSP less favorable in some
situations.
