LIGHTNING

A lightning strike or lightning

bolt is an electric discharge
between the atmosphere and
the ground.
Lightning strikes can injure
humans in several different
ways:
• Direct Direct strike, contact
injury, side splash, blast injuries
• Indirect Ground cover, EMPs,
Hallucinations
• Secondary Explosions, Fire,
Accidents

• Twelve people, mostly youngsters were killed and 11 others injured on
Sunday when lightning struck a watchtower around Amer Fort near
Jaipur. Around 40 people had gathered at two watchtowers around
and were clicking selfies when the lightning struck.
• Documents accessed by India Today TV show that those 12 lives
could have been saved if the state government had heard the
Archaeological Department’s requests to have lightning conductors
installed in the last eight years.

• In India every year more than 2,500 people die due to lightning
and experts believe that the severity and frequency of
thunderstorm/dust storms are expected to shoot up due to
increasing global temperature.
• However, the phenomena (thunderstorm and lightning, squall,
dust/hailstorm and strong winds) are not included in the centrally
notified list of natural disasters.

• To extinguish lightning, it is necessary to install a lightning conductor six meters
above the height of a building. But the small device which has been installed on the
road below Amer Palace by the government is of no use.
• In 2013, three people, including two tourists, were killed by lightning. In 2019, there
was a loss of Rs one crore due to lightning inside Amer Fort.

A few things to do .

• Buildings that are safe from lightning have paths for lightning to follow
through grounded wiring and plumbing in the walls that are properly
installed according to accepted municipal building codes, and may
Design, make and test
have metal structural members that are part of the building itself.
• There are three basic parts of any effective lightning protection system
: a model of a system
that
1.Air terminals, commonly called lightning rods or arrestors, can transport tomatoes
which
Combine
intercept or serve as an “attachment” point for lightning, the first part of
diverting the lightning from damaging the structure
in a way that won't squash
2. Down conductors that connect the air terminals to a grounding system
in order to harmlessly channel the lightning energy around a structure
from the air terminals to the ground or, in the case of boats, water around
them!
a structure
3. Ground terminals or electrodes, also called earthing, which effectively
dissipate the lightning energy into the ground or water and away from the
structure and its contents
