Answer Key
Very short answer type (1 mark)
Answer 1. Part of leaf which is attached to the stem is petiole.
Answer 2. Edible steams are:
a. Broccoli
b. Sweet potato
c. Cauliflower
Answer 3. Example of bell shaped flower is dhatura.
Answer 4. Leafs prepare food using carbon di oxide, chlorophyll and sun light.
This process is called as photosynthesis.
Answer 5. Root of plant prevents soil erosion. They bind soil so that wind and
water do not carry away soil.
Answer 6. Tap root is present in margosa.
Answer 7.
a. Sweet chestnut
b. Ragweed flower
Answer 8. Green plants act as a filter because they absorb carbon dioxide
through their leaves. Thus, they are responsible for purifying air.
Answer 9. Herbs with medicinal value are Aloe Vera and American ginseng.
Answer 10. Anther contains pollen grains.
Short answer type (2 & 3 marks)
Answer 11. Presence of starch in leaves:
Take leaf, spirit, a beaker, test tube, burner, water, a plate and iodine
solution.
Put the leaf in a test-tube and pour spirit to completely cover the leaf.
Then put test-tube in beaker half filled with water.
Heat the beaker till the green colour of leaf comes out in the spirit in
the test-tube.
Class 6-Science-Getting to know plants 5
After that, wash the leaf with water and put iodine on it. On doing so,
the leaf will turn blue-black. This shows the present of starch.
Answer 12. Midrib and veins support the leaf. They also transport food, water and
other nutrients.
Answer 13. Difference between tap root and fibrous root are:
Tap root Fibrous root
Tap root has a single thick
main root with many very Fibrous root has many small thin
small branches coming out of almost same sized roots.
it.
Answer 14. Stem is a two way street because:
a. Roots absorb water and minerals from soil and stem conducts
these to leaves and other parts of plant.
b. The leaves prepared food and this food travels through stem to
different parts of plant.
Answer 15. If potted plant with green leaves is shifted from sunlight and placed in
a dark room for several days it’s leaves will turn yellow. Eventually the
plant will die because it cannot perform photosynthesis and prepare
food to survive in the absence of sunlight.
Answer 16. Removal of stamen and carpel will further effect growth and
development of flower as these are the reproductive parts of a flower.

Answer 17.
Answer 18.
a. The leaves stores food in the form of starch.
b. Beanstalk is an example of a stem.
c. Unwanted plants growing in crop fields or lawn is termed as
weeds.
Answer 19.
a. Examples of joined sepals are periwinkle, hibiscus, China rose.
b. Example of stamen joined to sepals is rahumculaceae.
Answer 20.
a. Chrysanthemum is not a single flower (True)
b. Water is given out in the form of droplets in transpiration.
(True).
c. The broad green part of leaf is termed as lamina (True).
Class 6-Science-Getting to know plants 7
Long answer type (5 marks)
Answer 21. Most of the plants are classified into three categories:
a. Herbs-Herbs are plants with green and tender steams. They are
usually short. Examples- lavender, parsley
b. Shrubs-Shrubs have hard but thin stem. These have the stem
branching out near the base. Examples- hydrangea
c. Trees-Some plants are very tall and have hard and thick brown
stem. The stem has branches in upper part, much above the
ground. Examples are Mango tree, Peepal tree
Answer 22.
a. Creepers-Plants with weak stems that cannot stand upright and
spread on ground are called creepers. Example- Pa plant
b. Climbers Plants with weak stem that take the support of
neighboring structure and climb up are known as climbers.
Example-Money plant
Answer 23. If the stem stops functioning, the transport of water, minerals and
food will not take place and eventually the plant will die.
Answer 24. Structure of leaf:
a. Reticulate venation- The design made by veins in a leaf is
called leaf venation. If this design is net like on both sides of midrib
the venation is reticulate.
b. Parallel venation-If veins are parallel to one other the type of
venation is known as parallel venation.
Class 6-Science-Getting to know plants 8
Answer 25. Leaves are food factories of plant because they prepare food in the
presence of sunlight and a green colored substance present in them.
For this, leaves use water and carbon dioxide from air. This process is
called photosynthesis and oxygen is given out in this process.
Answer 26. Transpiration is process through which water comes out of leaves in
the form of vapor through stomata. Plant releases a lot of water into
air through this process.
Answer 27. Roots are important to plants as:
The roots help in holding the plant firmly in the soil.
The roots also provide physical support to plant.
They are used in absorption and conduction.
Answer 28. The main types of root present in plants are:
Tap roots
Fibrous roots
Tap root - Tap root has a single thick main root with many very
small branches coming out of it. Examples-gram, china rose.
Fibrous roots- Fibrous root has many small, thin, almost same
sized roots. Examples- maize, grasses, wheat
Yes, the type of root present in plant can be identified by observing
its venation. The plant with tap root has reticulate venation while
the plant with fibrous roots has parallel venation.
Answer 29. Different parts of flower are petals, Sepals, stamens, pistil.
Petals-Petals surround reproductive parts of flowers. They are
brightly coloured and attract insects.
Sepals-Sepal usually protects the flower in bud and acts as a
support for petals when in bloom. These may be called the external
covering of flower bud.
Stamen-It consists of a stalk called the filament and an anther
which contains pollen grains. Anther is bilobed and is attached to
filament.
Pistil-The pistil is the innermost part of the flower. It has three
parts-stigma, style and ovary.

Answer 30.
a. Sweet potato is an example of edible root.
b. Green leaves carry out synthesis of food by process called
photosynthesis.
c. Stamen is the male reproductive part of the flower.
d. The leaf of wheat shows Parallel venation.
e. The bead like structure present inside ovary is termed as ovules.
