WHAT ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO LEARN?

In the previous years, you were introduced to the parts of the human digestive system and how each part functions as well
as the process on how the digestive system breaks down food to nourish your whole body. You also learned that the human
body is composed of several organ systems, which work together to keep us alive.

In this module, you will learn the parts and functions of the respiratory and circulatory systems.
Furthermore, this module will give you an understanding of how the respiratory and circulatory systems work together to
transport nutrients, gases, and molecules to and from the different parts of the body and value the importance of proper
care of your body.
This module is divided into two lessons namely:
Lesson 1: Respiratory System

WHAT’S IS IT?
Lesson 1: RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
Breathing is the physical act of inhaling and exhaling. When we inhale, we take in air that contains about 21% oxygen
gas (O2) and 0.04% carbon dioxide (CO2). Some animals such as earthworms breathe through their skin. The dissolve oxygen
in the water diffuses into their skin, which acts as a respiratory membrane to provide oxygen to their cells. Gills are the adaptive
structures for breathing in the fishes. Insects use spiracles for breathing. These adaptive structures consist of respiratory tubes
directly connected to the openings of their exo-skeleton.

Human Respiratory System is responsible for the exchange of gases between humans and the environment. Respiration is the
process of taking in oxygen from the environment and delivering it to the cells. At the
same time, carbon dioxide is removed and taken out of the body.
Parts and functions of Respiratory System:
• Nose and Nasal Cavity- the opening of the respiratory system. They are the first
section of the body’s airway-the respiratory tract through which air moves.
• Pharynx- also known as the throat, the pharynx acts as a passageway for food on
its way to the stomach and for air en route to the lungs.
• Larynx- also known as the voice box. The larynx serves to protect the lower airways,
facilitates respiration, and plays a key role in phonation.
• Trachea- also known as the windpipe. The trachea serves as passage for air,
moistens and warms it while it passes into the lungs, and protects the respiratory surface
from an accumulation of foreign particles.
• Bronchi and Bronchioles- The main function of the bronchi and bronchioles is to carry air from the trachea into the
lungs.
• Alveoli- The alveoli are where the lungs and the blood exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide during the process of
breathing in and breathing out.

SCIENCE 9 – CIRCULATORY AND RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

Breathing Mechanisms:
Inspiration – is an active process that starts with the contraction of the diaphragm.
Expiration – is a passive event because muscle is not required during this process. In expiration, the diaphragm relaxes while
the chest cavity contracts.
Three types of Respiration:
External respiration is the exchange of gases from the external environment to the alveoli and the blood.
Internal respiration is the exchange of gases between the blood and cells.
Cellular Respiration is the biochemical oxidation of glucose and consequent synthesis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP).

Lesson 2: CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

Circulatory System allows dissolved oxygen, nutrients, and hormones to be delivered to individual cells while
removing carbon dioxide and waste products. The circulatory system is made up of the heart, blood vessels
and blood. The heart is the pumping station of the circulatory
system. The heart is covered by a membrane called pericardium.
The heart is divided into four chambers: (1) right and (2) left atria
and (3) the right and (4) the left ventricles. The right atrium receives
deoxygenated (oxygen-poor) blood from all parts of the body; the
left atrium receives oxygenated (oxygen-rich) blood from the lungs.
The right ventricle pumps deoxygenated blood toward the lungs
and the left ventricle pumps oxygenated blood to the aorta to all
parts of the body.
The blood vessels transport blood throughout the body.
There are three major kinds of blood vessels: arteries, veins, and
capillaries. Arteries are the largest blood vessels consisting of three
layers. They carry oxygenated blood away from the heart. Veins are thinner
compared to arteries. They are found closer to the skin, and their function is to carry
deoxygenated blood toward the heart, except for the pulmonary vein which
carries oxygenated blood to the heart. Capillaries are the smallest blood vessels in
the body. They enable the exchange of oxygen, nutrients and carbon dioxide
between the blood and cells surrounding them.
Blood is a connective tissue that looks like s plain red fluid. Red blood cells
or erythrocytes lack nuclei. The main function of RBC’s is to carry oxygen
throughout the body. White blood cells or leukocytes are cells with nuclei. They produced by multi-potent cells in bone
marrow. WBCs act as soldiers that defend the body from infections. Platelets or thrombocytes are cells without nuclei and is
considered the smallest blood cells. Their function is to prevent blood loss by clogging injured blood vessels. A protein called
fibrin traps platelets that causes the clogging of damaged vessels.
The three types of circulation: (1) coronary, (2) pulmonary and (3) systematic. Coronary – circulation of blood within
the heart, pulmonary – circulation of blood between the heart and the lungs and systematic – circulation of blood between
the heart and the cells of the body.
Mechanics of Circulation

Vena Cava Right Atrium Tricuspid valve Right Ventricle Semilunar Valve Pulmonary Artery

Lungs Pulmonary Vein Left Atrium Bicuspid valve Left Ventricle Aortic Valve

Aorta Body

The circulatory and respiratory systems work together to circulate blood and oxygen throughout the body. Air moves
in and out of the lungs through the trachea, bronchi, and bronchioles. Blood moves in and out of the lungs through the
pulmonary arteries and veins that connect to the heart.

WHAT’S MORE?
Direction: Label the different parts of the respiratory system and the heart.
