ICT Related Terms and Definitions

The document defines various information and communication technology (ICT) related terms. Some key terms defined include artificial intelligence (AI) as the intelligence of machines and branch of computer science to create it, augmented reality (AR) as a live view of the real world augmented by computer-generated input, biometrics as measurable biological characteristics used for authentication, blockchain technology as a decentralized ledger to record data in digital tokens grouped into blocks, and crowdsourcing as harnessing skills of those outside an organization who volunteer time and solve problems. The document provides definitions for over 20 ICT related terms.

ICT Related Terms and Definitions

By: Azuelo, Charmaine and Benjumia, Jerymae

1. AI (Artificial Intelligence): The intelligence of machines and the branch of computer
science that aims to create it.

2. AIoT: The convergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT),
otherwise known as the Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT), will facilitate
unprecedented opportunities for the ICT industry as well as the industry verticals that
leverage data analytics for improved business operations and development of new
and enhanced products and services.

3. Animation: The display of a sequence of images in a computer program or on a Web

page to give the impression of movement.

4. Application Programming Interface: The role of Application Programming Interfaces

(API) is evolving within the Information and Communications Technology (ICT)
space to support increasingly more than consumer-oriented communications,
applications, commerce, and digital content.

5. Augmented Reality: Augmented Reality (AR) is a form of immersive technology that

represents a live, direct or indirect, view of a physical, real-world environment whose
elements are augmented by computer-generated sensory input that enriches the
user’s perception of the real world.

6. Avatars: Graphical images representing people. They are what one is in a virtual
world. One can build a visual character with the body, clothes, behaviors, gender
and name of one’s choice. This may or may not be an authentic representation of
oneself.

7. Backup or Back Up: Used as a verb, to back up means to copy a File or Folder from
your computer to another Storage Device, e.g. a CD-ROM, as a precaution in case
your Hard Drive fails or is infected by a Virus.

8. Backbone: (TEL, HE, INT) A local backbone refers to the main network lines that
connect several local area networks (LANs) together.

9. Big Data Analytics: Designed to deal primarily with Unstructured Data, Big Data
technologies represent a collective combination of physical infrastructure, data
collection and integration capabilities, data security infrastructure, data storage
management, data mining and analytics.
10. Biometrics: (HE, IS) Biometrics is the study of measurable biological characteristics
used in computer security applications as an authentication technique. Most
commonly, biometrics used in computer security systems entails computer analysis
of fingerprints or speech. Biometrics is expected to become increasingly important in
e-business transactions, as an effective way to detect fraudulent users.

11. Block chain Technology: The term block chain refers to decentralized ledger or
database management system that enables participants to record data that is stored
as a chain of transaction in the form of digital tokens, sequentially grouped into a
block.

12. Blog: Contraction of the term Weblog. A blog can contain news items, short essays,
annotated links, documents, graphics, and multimedia. These posts are usually in
reverse chronological order and often take the form of a journal or diary.

13. Chat Room: A synchronous, mainly text-based communication facility, offering a

Web-based environment where people either drop into or arrange to meet and chat
at specific times. You type in your text online; it is seen almost immediately by others
online at the same time who respond online in real time.

14. Crowdsourcing: (GEN) Refers to harnessing the skills and enthusiasm of those
outside an organization who are prepared to volunteer their time contributing content
and solving problems.

15. Edge Computing: There is an evolution underway in which edge computing is

gaining prominence in ICT networks. Decentralized or distributed (e.g. Fog) cloud
computing will become increasingly important as various wireless and Internet of
Things (IoT) related applications require massive computing at the edge of networks.

16. Haptic Internet: Most people are familiar with Haptic technology by way of the
kinesthetic user interface for smart phones or other consumer electronics that
recreates a sense of touch by applying forces, vibrations, or motions to the user.
Conversely, haptic devices may incorporate tactile sensors that measure forces
exerted by the user on the interface.
17. Heterogeneous Networks: Wireless networks need to handle an ever-increasing
number of devices, consuming high volumes of data, both indoors and outdoors, and
in a very unpredictable pattern with seamless coverage and consistent capacity.

18. Netiquette: Etiquette on the Internet. A code of behavior for people communicating
by email via the Internet.

19. Packet Switching: A form of switching in which data is transmitted as packets of

information that are “bursty” in nature a usually transmitted over diverse routes. This
is in contrast to circuit-switching that relies upon maintaining a dedicated channel for
signaling and communications.

20. Troll: A troll is someone who intentionally posts derogatory or provocative messages
in an online community such as a Discussion List or Forum or Blog to bait other
users into responding.
