 Inclusion of four or more appropriate and relevant academic sources that the
student has found through their own research process
 Findings from research are appropriately explained, contextualized and
incorporated into the essay 
 Demonstration of student’s comprehension of the research they have collected,
and application to their own research topic as well as course themes

Quality of Argument/Analysis /5
 Student includes a clearly identifiable thesis in the introduction of their paper 
 Student develops clear and articulate framework to argue for their thesis or
support an analytical framework that relates back to their thesis
 Arguments and/or analyses are logical, sound and convincing
 Arguments and/or analyses demonstrate critical thinking on the part of the
students

Creativity, Ingenuity & Personal Touch /5


 Students select a compelling topic and demonstrate its importance in exciting or
engaging ways
 Students demonstrate their own investment and interest in the topic through their
arguments/analyses
 Students demonstrate newfound knowledge, perspective and/or appreciation for
the research topic that they have chosen  

Organization & Formatting /5


 Students follow all the formatting guidelines listed in the assignment instructions
 The appropriate length of the essay is followed
 Students include all necessary and relevant components of the assignment (i.e.
introduction, conclusion, title page, references page)
 Students follow appropriate APA style conventions, including in-text citations,
quotations and on the reference page

Application of Course Content /5


 Themes, perspectives and/or ideas from the course are reflected, explored and
engaged in the essay
 The essay is concerned with power and language in a broad sense, although the
concern may be narrowly applied to the student’s research topic
 At least one reading from the syllabus is used in this essay in a meaningful way 

Writing Style  /5
 Students follow all appropriate spelling and grammatical conventions
 Writing is clear, straightforward and in an appropriately scholarly tone
 Writing is engaging and impactful for readers
 Writing employs an active voice, concise sentences and does not include
unnecessary, extraneous words
