1. Modulation is the process of adding information to a carrier signal by changing properties like amplitude, phase, or frequency. It allows multiple signals to be transmitted simultaneously on the same channel and for smaller antennas to be used. Without modulation, information would just be noise and could not be successfully transmitted. 2. If information was not modulated, it would just be a simple beacon transmission without any meaningful information being conveyed. Most real-world information like voice, images, and video need modulation to be transmitted efficiently over long distances. 3. MIDTERM EXAMINATION
CPEN 80 – DATA AND DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS

1. How do you define modulation? What are the importance of modulation in data
communications and networking? (20 pts)
I define modulation as the process of adding information to the electronic or an
optical carrier signal. It is the type of process that we change one or more properties
of a carrier wave, which called a periodic waveform, using a modulating waveform
that usually contains information to be transmitted. The three types of it are
amplitude modulation, phase modulation and frequency modulation.
Modulation plays a very important role in data communications and networking
because it allows us to send signal over a band pass frequency range. Multiple
signals can be transmitted simultaneously on the same channel using different
frequency ranges if each signal receives its own frequency range. Another reason
to modulate the signal is to use a smaller antenna. An example of it is our radio,
each channel in our radio gets a certain range and the entire byte gets transmitted
over the range because of modulation. It allows sending the music or voice over a
band pass channel.

2. In your own opinion, what will happen if the information to be transmitted is not
modulated? (10 pts)
I think if the information that is not modulated is just a noise or a simple beacon
transmission and has no information. But information will be successfully
transmitted depending on the information itself because some information does not
need any modulation. Unfortunately, however, the information we humans deal with
is usually contained in native low-frequency signals, such as voice, image, video,
tactile, and sensory information, and we have a real problem when we try to
transmit these low-frequency signals. Bandwidth congestion is another problem, as
you need antennas that measure kilometers or megameters to build an efficient
communications system, and the list goes on. This is why we use modulation.
3. In your own opinion, among the cited types of digital modulation, which is the most
appropriate to use? Justify your answer. You can provide examples to best explain
your answer. (20 pts)
Digital modulation is defined as a modulation process used to modulate a carrier
wave using an individual signal and remove noise from the wave. Among the three
types of digital modulation, this is the amplitude shift key, frequency shift key and
the phase shift key, the most appropriate type to use for me is the amplitude shift
key. It is because it’s an effective technique to increase the input amplitude
characteristics in communications. It is very appropriate because it offers high
bandwidth efficiency, it has a simple receiver design that makes it as a big
advantage, and it can be used to transmit digital data over optical fiber. It is very
useful and the examples of applications of ASK are Home automation devices,
wireless base stations, monitoring systems, and industrial network devices. It has a
broad application that is why I think this is the most appropriate to use among the
types of digital modulation.
