Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Let’s Make a Difference in This World! Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle

Objectives:

Students will be able to participate in collaborative discussions with their peers.

Students will be able to recall information from experiences or gather information to answer

questions.

Students will be able to create a plan to help keep Earth clean

State Standards: 2.S.1A.4. Analyze ad interpret data from observations, measurements, or

investigations to understand patterns and meanings.

2.S.1B1. Construct devices or design solution to solve specific problems or needs: 1) ask

questions to identify problems or needs 2) ask questions about the criteria and constraints of the

devices or solutions 3) generate and communicate ideas for possible devices or solutions 4)

build and test devices or solutions 5) determine if the devices or solutions solved the problem,

and 6) communicate results

Context: This lesson is a second-grade science lesson on environmental effects that people have

had on our planet, as well as the ways that we can help counteract and try to help take care of
Britt 2

Earth. We are carrying this unit out in honor of Earth Day and trying to find “green” alternatives

to the way that people live. This lesson is a fun way to help end the unit that we have worked on

for the past week. Students will recall the “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle” method that we worked

on the day before, as well as come up with ideas of their own on ways to help take care of our

planet. Over the past week, my students have covered information on climate change, the

different types of pollution, the effects that landfills have had on the environment, as well as all

the other environmental effects that people have had on our planet. The class had a project where

they were to create an awareness poster, one that would not only bring awareness to certain

environmental issues but also suggest ways to help reverse or fix these issues. This lesson is

essentially a re-cap of all of this, done in a fun way to help reinforce everything that we have

learned and discussed.

Data: Students will be separated into three different groups, there will be a high, middle, and

low achieving group. This will help ensure that everyone can work together at the same pace

without having any students feel less than, or better than each other. Since this lesson is more of

a review to help reinforce the information before they take their final unit test, the groups will be

based off of scores on a review that they completed a few days before. As well as an exit ticket

they had completed on the reduce, reuse, recycle method that we covered the day before as well.

At then end of this lesson, students will complete an assignment on Quizizz. The data from this

assignment will help me with future groupings, as well as let me know if I need to spend

anymore time reviewing this unit before we move on to our final test. I will review their

assignments to see what areas any students struggled with the most and dedicate an allotted time

slot to review on those areas before we move on to our test and next unit. When reviewing the

data from the Quizizz assignment, I will make note of any students that seem to be struggling
Britt 3

more than others and make sure to work with them in a one-on-one (or small group) setting

before we take our test. The next unit will be on weather, so the data from the final test will help

me create the grouping for the first blended learning lesson on the weather unit.

Closure: Tablets for video/song kids for saving earth promise song - YouTube and to complete

assignment on Quizizz Find a Quiz - Quizizz

Procedures:

Introduction (20-25 minutes): This is a science lesson, so students would be coming back

from lunch/recess before we start. I would give them all time to put their things away and get re-

situated at their desks-as well as a few minutes to calm down from their excitement of running

around. Once everyone has their things put away and the class has calmed down, I will instruct

everyone to come to the back of the classroom (where the rug/class library is located) to form a

large circle. Once they are all seated, I will come over a place a globe (or world map) in the

middle of the circle. I will explain that today we will be doing a fun review to close out our unit,

as well as coming up with ways that we can help keep the Earth happy, clean, and healthy. I will
Britt 4

also explain that we will be partaking in a sharing circle, which I would explain to them: each

student will share their thoughts with the class on a certain topic. The topic is that people know

how important it is to keep our planet clean and healthy, but many still hurt the planet without

ever knowing it. I would start the circle by saying “People hurt Earth by throwing trash on the

side of the road”, I would then instruct the student to my right to say how they think people hurt

the Earth and each student from there would have a chance to say how they think that people hurt

Earth. I would have a list written on the SmartBoard in the front of classroom to help students to

come up with ideas (the list would be polluting land, air, or water. Littering, buying too many

things, using too much plastic or energy, cutting down trees). If any student struggles to come up

with an idea or doesn’t want to go off what is on the board, I would allow them a few minutes to

look up an idea on their tablet and come back to them. After every student has shared their

thought about how people hurt Earth, I will explain to the class exactly what we will be doing

today. I will direct them all to go back to their desks and get out the needed supplies for each

station. Once at their desks, I will assign groups and explain each station thoroughly. There will

be a list of the supplies that are needed for each station on the whiteboard, to ensure that no one

forgets to grab what they will need. There will also be a list stating assigned groups and who is

starting at which station. Once everyone gives me the signal that they are ready, I will signal that

they can move to their first station.

Teacher Directed (15 minutes): At the teacher directed station, I will be reviewing the

Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle method that we covered the previous day. I will have a portable,

small, whiteboard that has a chart drawn with three sections drawn on it (Reduce, Reuse,

Recycle). I will ask the group if they recall what reduce means, allowing time for them to share
Britt 5

their thoughts with each other. We will discuss that reduce means to make something smaller, or

less in amount. I will say that if we reduce the amount of trash that we make, we would be

helping take care of the Earth. I will then ask the group to give me examples of reducing, which I

will write under the Reduce section on chart. Once we have about three examples of reducing, I

will transition into seeing who remembers what it means to reuse. I will allow the group a minute

or two to discuss that it is a process where someone uses an item that has already belonged to

someone else or that was used in a different way. The group will then discuss some examples of

reusing, which I will write on the chart under reuse. Things like, I can give my old clothes to

someone who needs them to help reduce the amount of fabric wasted or the amount of space it

would take up in a landfill. Once we have about three examples, I will transition into recycle. I

will ask if the group remembers what it means to recycle, giving them a minute or two to discuss

with each other what it means to recycle. We will discuss together that it is a process that

changes waste to useful materials. We will discuss some of the things that can be recycled like,

paper, plastic, glass, tin cans, etc. The group will then come up with a few examples of recycling,

which I will write on the board. (Like, I can recycle my bottles to help our planet).

Collaborative (15 minutes): At the collaborative station, students will find a large, white,

piece of paper, pencils, a permanent marker, and coloring supplies. The group will be instructed

to begin thinking of ways that they can help Earth. At the top of the paper, they will write out the

title “Helping Hand” and write down each group members name. They will decide whose hand

they will trace, first in pencil and then they can go over the outline with the permanent marker.

Once they have the hand outlined, they will need to discuss with each other the different ways

that they could help Earth. They can make a list of all the different ways and from that choose
Britt 6

five or they could talk about the ways they think are the most important. However they come up

with their ideas is up to them, but they need to discuss it all together and write out five complete

sentences on their hand. One sentence on each finger, so five sentences in total. This could take

the group the entire fifteen minutes, which is okay if it does. If the group finishes their sentences

and there is still time left before they switch to the next station, they can begin to draw pictures

on their hands. They can draw out pictures that depict their sentences, or they can draw pictures

that depict other ideas that they had come up with. If they have time to draw pictures on their

hands, they will need to go over their sentences in permanent marker to ensure that the writing

does not fade into the background of drawings. One student from each group will be told to hold

onto their “Helping Hand” until the end of the lesson.

Independent Digital (15 minutes): At the independent digital station, students will be

instructed to take out their tablets as well as their science notebooks (or a piece of paper), and a

pencil. They will be instructed to open their tablets, where they will find three new shortcuts that

were added to their home screens. One of these shortcuts will not be utilized until the end of the

lesson and is clearly labeled as so. The students will be instructed to watch a short YouTube

video, Science Video for Kids: How to Care for the Environment - YouTube, on ways that kids

can help care for their environment. Once they finish watching the video, they will need to write

down at least three ways that they can begin helping their environment. Things like, beginning to

recycle their bottles while at school or trying to convince their parents to get a recycling bin at

home (if they do not have one yet), taking shorter showers, giving their old toys or clothes to a

church or homeless shelter, picking up trash in their neighborhood or at the park. Once they have

at least three ways they can help care for their environment, they can go to the Turtle Diary
Britt 7

shortcut to play a fun recycling game, https://www.turtlediary.com/game/recycling-waste.html.

This game is a fun way for the students to distinguish between things that need to be thrown in

the trash and the things that can be recycled (or even the items that can be put into a compost

pile, which is something that we have discussed but it not a part of this review today). The game,

as well as video, helps to reinforce what we have learned about reducing, reusing, and recycling

while also making it into a fun game for them! I believe that this could help get more kids to

partake in the lesson as well as taking the lesson home with them to try to help make a change in

the world.

Closure (20-25 minutes): Once each group has completed all of their stations, the class

will be directed to return to their desks. The student from each group that has the “Helping

Hand” drawing will place their papers on my desk. Once everyone is seated, and all items have

been put up, I will ask them if they have any questions about what we did today or anything that

they still might not fully understand. We will spend a few minutes doing this, if needed. After

this, I will ask each group to share their “Helping Hand” with the class. They can explain what

they wrote and what the pictures they drew are. After that, we will determine where they will be

hung up (where in the classroom or if we will put them on the bulletin board in the hallway

outside of our classroom door). I will then project the “kids for saving Earth promise song” on

the SmartBoard (kids for saving earth promise song - YouTube). We will watch the video and

sing the song together as a class. Once we have sung the song, I will direct the class to take out

their tablets so that they can complete the assignment that I posted for them on Quizizz. I will

give them about 10-15 minutes to complete the assignment (it will be a short one, with about 6-8

questions on it). While they are doing this, I will be walking around seeing who seems to be
Britt 8

struggling still (I will make a note of this so that I can work with these students more during a

later lesson). This assignment will let me know if I need to spend any more time reviewing topics

from this unit or if they are okay to finish out with the test the next day.

Rationale:

 (Science Video for Kids: How to Care for the Environment - YouTube,): This video is a

great way to reinforce the different issues and ideas that we have covered as a class on

how to help our environment. It helps support the standards and objectives by helping the

students recall the different information we have learned on the negative effects that

people have had on our environment while also helping them come up with ways to help

counteract this. Many people, especially young kids, feel like what they do will not make

a difference enough to actually help. This video can help remind the students that even

the smallest thing can help save our world and make a difference. The content quality of

this video is very good, it has appeasing graphics that can keep attention. It explains

things in a very clear way for students to understand. The only issue that I have with the

video is that the words are spoken very slowly. This can be a good thing, but it can also

leave too much of a gap between sentences for some students to become distracted.

However, it is a more interactive video. It asks questions after explaining certain topics,

so it is helping reinforce this knowledge for the students even more so. It differentiates

learning for everyone by moving at a pace that helps reinforce the information that is

being said. However, if there are any students with ADD/ADHD there is a chance that

the slower pace could be an issue for them. If I were to have a student with ADHD/ADD,

I would make sure that the digital station was closer to the teacher directed station to help
Britt 9

make sure they do not become distracted. I would also be able to use closed caption for

students who have a hearing impairment, that way they can still follow along and partake

in this station. While the images in the video are nice, and go with what is being said, it is

not necessary for the students to see them. So, if there were any students with a visual

impairment, it would not be an issue for them if they could not see the images being

portrayed on the screen.

 (https://www.turtlediary.com/game/recycling-waste.html): I chose this game to help add

some fun to the learning process. The video the group watches before playing will help

reinforce the information needed to be successful at this game. It can help break up the

monotony of learning but still keep the students reinforcing the knowledge that we are

covering. The content quality is very good. The graphics used are very clear as to what

they are, to help ensure the students will get the answer right. It also lets them know

when they put an item in the wrong bin, while giving them the opportunity to get it into

the correct bin. This game is timed, but not in a manner where the students have to beat

the clock. It is timed to show them how long they have been playing, and how many

items they have gotten into the correct (or wrong) bins. So, each student can move at their

own pace. Some could go fast if they’d like to, and try to beat their own scores, or some

could take their time to ensure they are correct. It is not really a game that would work

for a student with a visual impairment though, that is if it were severe to the point that

they could not see the game on the screen. If I were to have a student with a visual

impairment to that level, I would find a different activity for them to partake in instead of

this game online.

Britt 10

 kids for saving earth promise song - YouTube I chose this song as a fun way to help end

the lesson. We have spent the past week learning about the different effects that people

have had on the environment, which sometimes can be overwhelming for people. This

song can be a way to help encourage students to do what they can to help take care of our

planet so that it is still here and healthy when they are ready to have children themselves.

When I was in elementary school, over 20 years ago, some of my teachers would use

songs to help us learn things that most considered boring. To this day, I remember certain

things because of those songs. So, I feel like songs are an excellent way to turn a lesson

into something they will remember for a lifetime, even though they might think it is lame

at that time.

 Find a Quiz - Quizizz I chose this piece of multimedia because it is an amazing

app/website for students and teachers to use. It aligns with standards and learning

outcomes because it has content created by teachers, for other teachers to use, or you can

create it yourself. The content can be a quiz, homework, a class assignment, or even an

entire lesson. This app is of very high quality because of its ease in using, creating any

content on it is extremely easy as well. A teacher can either use existing content, change

things, or add more to it, or create their own specialized content to align perfectly with

the content and lessons that the teacher is covering in class. This app is appropriate for

getting students to be engaged and shows me the data of things that the are getting wrong

and need more help in. I can assign them work on it to do in class or at home and will

always be able to see the student’s achievement data. The navigation is very easy for both
Britt 11

teachers and students. There are no sounds unless you add them in, so it would not be an

issue for a student who is hearing impaired. If a student had a visual impairment, they

could use a special device that has a much larger screen for them to see it better. Also, if

we are working on it in class, I will be projecting it on the SmartBoard as well which

would help those who are visually impaired and have a hard time seeing it on their tablet.

Students with ADHD would also benefit from this because it is an engaging way to keep

them involved in the lesson and any assignments. You can also adjust the amount of time

given to answer questions, if you want it timed at all. Meaning you can create one special

for any student who needs extra time when taking tests/quizzes.
