Lesson Objective: After the lesson, students will be able to ask and answer about a tool.

Warm up: Lucky Me or Not?

 Work in 2 groups.

 There are 10 numbers, associated with

6 questions (different points), 2 lucky
numbers and 2 unlucky numbers.

 Each group takes turns to choose a

number and answer the questions.

 The group with more points will be the

winner.

Activity 1A: What is this?

 Work in groups. Look at the clues on the

slides and guess the name of the tools.

 Look at all the tools again and talk about

their functions using different structures.

Activity 2A: Can you describe this part?

 Work in pairs. Ask and answer about the following parts of tools (shape, color, material, function,
length). Then draw them if possible.
 Student A: Ask questions (2, 4, 6) and answer questions (1, 3, 5) about the following parts of
tools.
 Student B: Turn to resource files (Unit 4- Activity 2A).

A: It is the handle of a screwdriver.

B: What color is the handle?

A: It is black.

B: What is it made of?

A: It is made of plastic.

Activity 4A: Which one do you need?

 Work in pairs

 Make conversations based on the given situations

Situation 1:

Student A: You are a professional mechanical engineer. You need a screwdriver (choose 1) but
you left it in the toolbox in the garage. Ask the apprentice to get it for you. Give him some
information so that he can get the right one.

Student B: You are an apprentice. The professional mechanical engineer needs a screwdriver but
he left it in the toolbox in the garage. You agree to get it for him. Ask for some information so that
you can get the right one.

Situation 2:

Student A: You are an apprentice. The professional mechanical engineer needs a hammer but he
left it in the truck in the garage. You agree to get it for him. Ask for some information so that you
can get the right one.

Student B: You are a professional mechanical engineer. You need a hammer (choose 1) but you
left it in the toolbox in the truck. Ask the apprentice to get it for you. Give him some information so
that he can get the right one.

Lesson Objective: After the lesson, students will be able to describe a toolbox.

Warm up: Miming

 Work in 2 groups.
 One student from each group comes to the front, looks at the word
prepared by the teacher and tries to mime the word.
 The others guess the word.
 The group getting more correct answer will be the winner.

Activity 1B – Bingo game

 Work in groups of five.

 1 student in each group in turn talks about the function of 1
tool (which is randomly chosen by that student).
 The other students in the group try to guess the tool.
 The first group with all the members completed their turn
says BINGO to be the winner group.

 Work in pairs.
 Brainstorm to describe a tool by writing down all the words/ phrases associating with the tool.

 Practice describing the tool using the words brainstormed in pairs.

 Each pair chooses some tools to describe in front of the class. The others guess the tool.

Activity 2B (optional)

 Each student brings some tools to class to make the class’s

toolbox
 In turn, 1 student covers his/ her eyes, touch tools in the
class’s toolbox.
 Describe what he/ she has touched.
 The other students guess the tool.
 At the end of the game, students practice describing the
class’s toolbox.

Activity 3B: Who’s he?

 Work in pairs.
 Student A looks at the passage below.
 Student B turns to resources file (Unit 4 Activity
3B).
 Ask and answer to find out the missing
information about Alex.

Student A:
Alex is (1) (What job?) for Toyota Factory. He has a toolbox with a lot of basic hand tools. There are
some screwdrivers, ratchets, pliers, box wrenches, calipers, and a torch of different shapes and sizes.
For gripping things, he usually uses the pliers. The calipers are for measuring things and the torch is
to shine dark places. The tool he uses most frequently (2) (How many….) types of screwdrivers. The
former is Phillips screwdrivers with cross-shaped tips, and the latter is slotted screwdrivers with (3)
(what shape?) tips. He has four Phillips screwdrivers which are made in Japan and three slotted
screwdrivers that are made in China. They are made of steel, so they are very hard and corrosion-
resistant. The handle is made of (4) (What material?) - a good insulator. Therefore, they are safe for
him to work with. He uses screwdrivers for (5) (What function?)

Activity 4B: This is my tool box.

 Work individually.
 Draw your toolbox.
 Describe your toolbox using the
suggested questions:
1. What are there in your toolbox?

2. What are their functions?

3. What tool do you use most frequently?

5. Students’ self-assessment
Look at the objectives specified at the beginning of the unit and write down what you have (not)
achieved and what you need to do to improve your English.

RESOURCE FILES
UNIT 4- LESSON 1

ACTIVITY 1A: Features and functions of the hand tools:

(Slotted) screwdrivers ● The handle is often made of plastic.

● It is used for tightening or loosening single slotted screws.

Hacksaw ● It is used to cut objects.

● It is used to cut metal or plastic objects.

Sledge hammer ● It is used for hammering objects.

● It is much bigger than other hammers.

Socket wrench ● It helps tighten and loosen nuts, bolts and other fasteners.
● It has interchangeable heads called sockets

Setsquare ● We can use it to measure objects.

● Its main function is to draw angles.

Pliers ● It has jaws.

● It is used to grip and bend objects.

UNIT 4 - LESSON 2

Activity 1B:

1. It is used for hammering small things. -> Ball peen hammer

2. It is used to loosening and tightening bolts and nuts -> box wrench
3. The function of them is to measuring widths or distances -> calipers
4. We use it to cut hard things -> hacksaw
5. It is to find out the width or length or height of something (a simpler way to measure) -> measuring
tape
6. They are for gripping things/ bending wire. -> Pliers
7. We use it to allow movement in 1 direction only. -> Ratchet.
8. Its function is to draw angles. -> Setsquare
9. It is used for hammering things (usually heavier than a ball peen hammer) -> sledge hammer
10. It is used for driving in and pulling out slotted screws -> slotted screwdriver
11. Its function is to help us see in dark places. -> Torch.
12. It is used to cut things. -> Utility knife
13. You use it to driving in and pulling out cross-shape screws -> Phillips screwdriver
