I. INTRODUCTION

Martial arts has been believed as an effective way on defending oneself from any

external harm that a person may encounter in everyday living. Especially this days

where threats in the surrounding are inevitable. There are several kinds of martial arts

in the world that were being practiced by many people for their leisure, fitness and as a

way of self-defense – one of it is the Tae Kwon Do.

Tae Kwon Do is considered as one of the most popular kind of martial art in the

whole world. Tae Kwon Do is a Korean martial art that is literally translated to as the

“art of kicking and punching”. It was been first played during 1940’s and it is commonly

characterized by its emphasis on head-height kicks, jumping and spinning kicks, and

fast kicking techniques. T.M. Ho (1979) defined Tae Kwon do as “a sport that responds

to survival needs in a powerful and rational manner and maintains, as well an orderly

systems uniformly related to the inner and outer spheres of the human body”. The

sport became known worldwide and later it was been adapted by Filipinos.

In the Philippines, Tae Kwon Do is one of the most common martial art that

Filipinos are involved to. The use of this kind of martial art can be easily observed in

different private or public schools and either private training gyms which helps students

learn more about this martial art. In fact the government includes this as an event to

several sporting events in the country. Many enthusiast in this sport consider this as an

effective physical fitness activity because Tae Kwon Do requires a lot of physical

trainings in order to perform kicks and other stunts effectively. Also it was been

thought-out that this form of martial art is an effective way in defending oneself in
times of threats and harm, especially here in the Philippines where physical threats are

very usual to happen in streets and in other public places. Most of this cases involves

females, children and youths. Females are more prone to cases such as rape and other

form of sexual harassments. Children are the one who can be easily get bullied. While

the youths, they are usually involved in riots or gang wars where sometimes it may

cause harm to them specially if they don’t how to properly defend their selves.

To support this claim, the researchers have identified theories that will form the

foundation of their claims, namely the theory of self-dependence, the theory of

cognitive assessment, and the theory of psychology.

The Self-dependency theory is recognized by the researchers as the ability to act or

perform the certain defensive strategies into the threats they will encounter. This

emphasizes the concept of oneself to be dependent into his or her self only during the

times of threats and harm. This theory believes that if a person has a knowledge about

martial arts such as Tae Kwon Do he or she can defend his or her self without the help

of other in order to escape or defeat those who wants to harm them.

The second theory which is the Cognitive Appraisal Theory is considered as the

ability to know what to feel in times of threats. This theory focuses on an individual

cognition of a person who are harmed that informs their emotional response. It is a

theory of emotion which implies people’s personal interpretation of an event in

determining their emotional reaction (Psych Central 2014).

The third theory is the Psychological theory, it is recognized by the researchers

as the ability of a person to think properly in the times of threat. This theory indicates

that a person must think clearly and fast in order to create solutions to the threats they

are facing.

The goal of this research study is to examine perceived threats to students in

their everyday lives. It will also assess the efficacy of taekwondo and analyse students '

knowledge of martial art and its practical use in real life situations, in particular the

challenges they face every day .Moreover, this will discuss the relationship of the
