I have chosen four writing pieces that I believe show how my writing has progressed over my
writing career. These pieces I have chosen showcase my ability of creative thinking and
organized writing. These pieces have my personal experience and knowledge I have gained from
different courses during my college experiences. Ihope you enjoy these readings as much as I
enjoyed writing them.
My first writing sample is titled The True Pontiental of Conversations. This piece was the first
essay I wrote in composition II taught by you.I was instructed to choose one of the three prompts
and write an essay. I choose to write about the potential of conversations. I was to consider the
power of conversation. “ Why is it important? In what ways has conversation solved problems
in your life?” I chose this topic because I have learned various information and made
connections through conversations. I started my portfolio with these pieces because I believe it to
be my best piece so far. My writing has progressed this semester tremendously but I know I have
more to work on. My second writing sample is titled My Favorite Place. This piece was for my
composition I class. This piece is one of my favorites because I was able to talk about my
childhood while growing up in my granny's house and all the love she gave to me as a child . It
allowed me to incorporate my personal experience and fun memories into my writing. For this
pieces I was instructed to describe my favorite place using my five senses. I learned that when
telling a story it is important to use your five senses. It lets the readers feel how you felt
throughout your story.
My third writing sample was for my music class I took my freshman year of spring semester. I
was told to listen to Beethoven No.9 and do a concert report over it. I took a music appreciation
class in high school but it was never as advanced as this music class. The beginning of the course
I struggled with the meaning of the term but I was determined to learn them. I learned to notice
when music crescendo (Get louder) and decrescendo (Get softer). It was a challenge to get out of
my shell when writing this. I never listened to classical music so this was unfamiliar to me.
My final and last writing essay is a reflection piece I wrote for my world religion class. Taking
this class was one of the best decisions I made. We read this book called God is Not One. This
book contained chapters of different religions and what the practice consisted of . Reading God
is One not only made my respect for other religions skyrocket but enlighten me on the diversity
in traditions religions have and the similarities they all share. Buddhist was the most interesting
in my opinion to read about.
I have alway struggled when it came to writing but College Compositions I and II have improved
my writing significantly. During composition I my writing lacked many skills. I always felt like
my high school career never prepared me for college composition. I remember only doing one
essay my entire high school career so I have never felt confident in my writing but I have grown
to not take myself so seriously and let go while writing. Composition I learn that details matter
when telling a story it is important to make your audience feel like they were there with you. I
learned who my audience was. If I was writing a story about taking a trip, my audience would be
those who plan on taking a trip. I tend to overthink when writing and stress myself out which
then leads to writer's block but composition taught me to have fun and be creative. That's when
the best writing is written.
During Composition II I still had skills I needed to practice. I struggle with sentence structure
and letting my voice be heard in my writing but during composition II I have learned to sound
like myself when writing professor Davis you taught me this. I remember you say that it is
unnecessary to use these big words to sound intelligent just type how you would speak to
someone in person. Thank you for telling me that, I have alway had the tendency to use big
words to make myself sound intelligent but now I know it better to let your voice be heard in my
writing. I found the technique to be extremely helpful taking out words that have no meaning
and the outlines made my writing improve.
In Conclusion to completing this class, I can say you have improved my writing greatly. I have
become more confident in my writing and more aware of the errors I make throughout my essay.
I remember being nervous for Composition II. I didn't think I would do well in this class. I lack
basic skill and writing isn't my best subject, but you have made this a fun experience. You can
see the passion in the way you teach, not every professor has that. I am glad to say that I took my
Composition II with you and will gladly be an advocate for other students to take composition
with you.
Sincerely,
Aiden Thompson
