Investigating Quadratic Equations

This document investigates the relationship between quadratic equations and parabolas by having the reader graph various quadratic equations and observe how changing coefficients affects the shape and position of the parabola. The reader is asked to graph equations with increasing and decreasing coefficients to see how it impacts the steepness and orientation of the parabola. They are also asked to observe how changing the constant term affects the y-intercept and minimum/maximum points of parabolas. The goal is for the reader to understand how different components of the quadratic equation relate to key features of the corresponding parabolic graph.

Investigating what a QUADRATIC EQUATION tells us about the PARABOLA

For this activity you will need to use a graphing calculator (I recommend using Desmos so you can
snip the image and paste when necessary). If you are unfamiliar with Desmos watch the link to get
basic information that you will need.

1. Graph the following quadratic equations on the same grid. Using your snipping tool
attach the image you see in the box on the left and answer the question in the box on
the right
y = x2 y = 2x2 y = 3x2 y = 4x2
Which graph is the steepest?

2. Graph the following quadratic equations on the same grid. Using your snipping tool
attach the image you see in the box on the left and answer the question in the box on
the right
y = x2 y = 1/2x2 y = 1/3x2 y = 1/4x2
Which graph is the steepest?

3. Without graphing which graph do you think would be steepest? Explain your reasoning
y = 10x2 or y = 6x2

4. Graph the following quadratic equations on the same grid. Using your snipping tool
attach the image you see in the box on the left and answer the question in the box on
the right
y = -x2 y = -2x2 y = -3x2 y = -4x2
What do you notice?

5. Graph the following quadratic equations on the same grid. Using your snipping tool
attach the image you see in the box on the left and answer the question in the box on
the right
y = -x2 y = -1/2x2 y = -1/3x2 y = -1/4x2
What do you notice?

6. Without graphing what do you think the following graph would look like as compared to
the y = x2 ? Explain your reasoning. y = -10x2

7. Graph the following quadratic equations on the same grid. Using your snipping tool
attach the image you see in the box on the left and answer the question in the box on
the right
y = x2 y = x2 + 1 y = x2 - 1 y = x2 + 3
What is the minimum value and
y-intercept of each graph?

8. Graph the following quadratic equations on the same grid. Using your snipping tool
attach the image you see in the box on the left and answer the question in the box on
the right
y = -x2 y = -x2 + 1 y = -x2 - 1 y = -x2 + 3
What is the maximum value and
y-intercept of each graph?

9. Without graphing, determine the vertex (identify if it's a maximum/minimum) and y-

intercept of the following functions.
y = 4x2 y = -x2 + 3 y = x2 - 5 y = -6x2 + 8
Vertex (x,y)
Max/min

y-intercept

10. Time to investigate other aspects of a quadratic function. Enter in many of your own
equations and see what happens. Identify 2 NEW findings about how an equation
changes a graph of a quadratic function.
