Every piece of dance conveys a message. History is the most significant


aspect of folk dance. Folk dances are performed to represent a country's or
region's traditional way of life. Philippines has a distinct traditional dance
heritage. Cariñosa and Pig-agawan are examples of Filipino traditional dances
that maintain Philippine culture and encapsulate fundamental values essential
to our culture, nation, and children. Both have their own distinct rhythm that
draws people's attention and provides a true image of daily life in past decades
while also captivating present audiences.

Cariñosa  is a term that defines a lady that is kind, pleasant, and lovable.
Cariñosa is a Hispanic-inspired Philippine traditional dance from the Maria Clara
suite, in which the fan or handkerchief plays an important part by placing the
pair in a romantic context. Cariñosa's music has a 3/4 beat, similar to typical
Spanish dances. Pig-agawan is a flirtation dance in which multiple ladies dance
alluringly with this gentleman. It uses a handkerchief to communicate feelings.
The play concludes with the community signing a peace pact and offering
gratitude.

Pig-agawan and Carinosa depicts a young man's courtship of a maiden


who has piqued his interest. Both folkdances are cultural dances that may be
performed in all regions. Both of these ethnic dances have commonalities in
that they are both a dance for pursuing women within an area using
handkerchiefs.  A kind of dance that depicts men wooing women in their own
unique way. The distinction between these two is that the Carinosa Dance is
performed more gently and involves only one male and one girl. They are
merely focusing on each other to demonstrate the man's honesty to the female
he is courting, but in Pig'agawan is performed by many other girls or males as
flirting in order to gain the attention of others.

Because of the many styles and clothing that the dancers wear while they
dance, the Philippines has a distinct traditional dance heritage. They employed
several different props. The graceful rhythm of Filipino traditional dances was
well-known. Folk dances are important in our modern life because we need to
remember and protect our culture. Folk dances are more than just dancing;
they tell a story about the significance of our culture and the source of our
cultural identity.
