1. Read a summary of a novel. Then mark each statement True (T) or False (F).
Russell Baker’s latest novel, Hollywood Ben, is the story of an ugly man who believes he is the
best-looking man in the world. The main character is a poor, homeless man called Ben (we
never learn his last name). At the beginning of the story, Ben doesn’t seem to notice that
people laugh at him as he passes by or that young children are afraid of his face. It is obvious
Ben has problems. He’s overweight, going bald, and he can’t shave very well because his face is
such a strange shape “with bits that stick out where they shouldn’t,” as Baker describes him.
I won’t ruin the story for you, but Ben is involved in an accident. Confused, he wanders into a
hotel bathroom where a Hollywood superstar, also named Ben, is hiding from a group of press
photographers. This Ben is tall, muscular, and curly haired, nothing like homeless Ben at all.
The star escapes, but the shouts of the photographers stay in Ben’s head.
Ben becomes convinced he is a Hollywood star. So strong is his belief that producers, directors,
and movie fans start to believe him, too. Only the reader knows that he is dying of a head
injury from his accident.
