Narrative Report

NATIONAL DRUG EDUCATION PROGRAM (NDEP)

The National Drug Education Program is held for parents and students to be well
informed and knowledgeable of drug related issues. It is to help them deal with situations
where member of the family might be involved in drug abuse and misuse. It is for them to be
aware of the signs and warning so they can prevent other people from participating in those
kinds of activities. That is why programs, seminars and activities were held to raise
awareness for this topic

The “Parental Drug Preventive Education Seminar” was conducted last January 18,
2019; 8:00 am to 9:00 am at the covered court of San Jose Elementary School. Attendance of
the parents to this seminar is needed to receive a certificate issued by the Municipality of
Rodriguez. This certificate is one of the requirements for the grade 6 students to progress to
grade 7. Before the seminar began, the grade 6 advisers monitored the attendance of the
participating parents. The speaker, Leonilo Agua, from the Municipality of Rodriguez came
to discuss issues related to drug use and drug prevention. Their main objective was to educate
or orient the parents on how to keep their child away from drug related incidents and
awareness to drug related issues. The focus of the seminar was not only for the parents of the
grade 6 students, but also for the teachers present during the seminar. The parents were
attentive in the discussion and it was quite interactive, in a way that real-life situations were
given by the speakers like how the parents should monitor their child when it comes to what
they have access to and what they keep. This made the discussion more relatable to the
parents because it is something that some of them have already experienced or is
experiencing. They now have more knowledge and were able to gain more information in
terms of what various kinds of drugs look like and how they can deal with drug use, abuse
and misuse in their household. The Seminar ended smoothly with the acknowledgment of the
speakers and the distribution of the certificates to the parents.

Another program was held last January 31, 2019; 9:00am at the covered court of San
Jose Elementary School for the grades 4, 5 and 6 students. DepEd Youth Ambassadors Jesse
Perkins and Christian Perkins, singers, models, athletes and social media influencers, came to
the school as part of their “Kaibigan Tour”. Their aim was to encourage the students to keep
away from bad influences and avoid doing vices such as using harmful or illegal drugs,
smoking, drinking alcoholic beverages and bullying. The program started with an
introduction of the Perkins twins and was followed by their lively number where they sang
and danced for the students and teachers in the audience. They then proceeded with having
the students interact with them by having them loudly repeat the words “NODRUGS”, “NO
SMOKING”, “NO ALCOHOL” and “NO BULLYING” to remind the students that these
things are not good for them and that these are only going to drag them down. They are still
at the age where they should focus on being good sons/daughters to their parents and good
students at their school. They program ended with a picture taking session and bidding
goodbyes. The students then went back to their classrooms to resume their classes.

In line with the National Drug Education Program (NDEP), a poster making and
slogan contest was held last February 4, 2019; 9:00am at the San Jose Elementary School
canteen, with the theme “SJES Dreaming a drug-free environment”. This gave the students
the chance to think of ways on how to express their creativity and show how they envision a
world where drugs are not a problem in our society and how they can express their
knowledge of drug prevention via slogans and posters. The participants of the contest come
from all grade levels. Each grade level was represented by two students, where one joined the
poster making while the other joined the slogan contest. For the poster making contest, the
contestants were Miakha Althea Francisco from grade 1, Jeah Jane S. Bandiola from grade 2,
Gabriela S. Garcia from grade 3, Mark John V. Arreola from grade 4, Jade Edrianna Pasion
from grade 5, and Louraine Iris Franz R. Lingad from grade 6. For the slogan contest, the
contestants were Lurienne E. Albeza from grade 1, Ellanie Ckarm V. Dela Cruz from grade
3, Gracely Ann F. Cruz from grade 4, Maria Abba Dela Cruz rom grade 5, and Akeelah Julia
Dela Cruz from grade 6.

The contest was split into two categories. The grades 1, 2 and 3 students, category A,
competed with one another and the grades 4, 5 and 6 students competed in category B.
Among the students in category A in the poster making contest, Gabriela S. Garcia was able
to get 1st place, followed by Jeah Jane S. Bandiola in 2nd and Miakha Althea Francisco in 3rd.
For category B, Louraine Iris Franz R. Lingad was able to get 1st place, followed by Mark
John V. Arreola in 2nd and Jade Edrianna Pasion in 3rd. In the slogan contest, the one who got
1st place was Ellanie Ckarm V. Dela Cruz, followed by Lurienne E. Albeza who got 2nd in
category A. In category B, Akeelah Julia Dela Cruz won 1st place, followed by Maria Abba
Dela Cruz in 2nd and Gracely Ann F. Cruz in 3rd place.

With all the beautiful works of the students it was thanks to the judges, Sheila Mae
Gonzales, Abigail N. Feliciano, John Noah Apolonio, Kristelle Mendoza, Aileen Santos, and
Mely Salayon, the winners were decided through their careful evaluation of the outputs.

For the last program of the NDEP drug prevention campaign, a seminar was held last
February 8, 2019; 1:00 pm to 1:40 pm at the covered court of San Jose Elementary School.
The guest speaker, SPO3 Karen Elsa K. Santiago, had a very informative talk with the grades
4, 5 and 6 students. She broadened their knowledge of drugs, such as what they are, what
they look like, what they can do when taken in by the body, how harmful they are to society,
consequences that can be faced by those who partake in drug abuse, and why they should
avoid being involved with drugs. In our day and age drug abuse has become a big problem
that our country faces. It is not impossible for children to be exposed to these kinds of
activities even at an early age. The minds of children are, in a way, under the development
stage. They can be influenced by what they see, whether it be good or bad. It is important to
orient them about these issues so that they will know what to do and expect if or when they
experience situations involving drugs. The whole National Drug Education Program has been
of great help to making students more aware of drug related issues and it also helps them be
more knowledgeable about what they should do or not do with drugs. The theme “Dreaming
a Drug-Free Environment” is very appropriate for this program because most, if not everyone
dreams for a better future for humanity.
