1 Adverbs of frequency

1 We use adverbs of frequency with the present simple to say how often we do
something.

0% 30-40% 70-80% 85-95% 100%

2 In positive sentences we put the adverb before the main verb.

1 They often drive to work. 2 He never drinks coffee.

3 We put the adverb after the verb be.

1 They are always happy. 2 I am often at work on Saturdays.

1 In negative sentences, the adverb goes between the auxiliary and the main verb.

1 She doesn’t usually walk to work.

2 They don’t always wear new clothes.

2 We put the adverb after the negative form of the verb be.

1 Smart clothes are not often cheap.

2 She isn’t always late.

3 In English we say: I don’t always … I don’t usually ... I don’t often ... .
But, we do not say: I don’t sometimes … I don’t never ... .

1 Decide where the adverb of frequency goes in each sentence.

1 I go shopping with a friend. never

2 Cheap clothes aren’t bad clothes. always

3 They work at home. sometimes

4 He doesn’t go shopping. often

6 She reads on the bus. often

5.2 Wh- questions

1 Wh- questions start with a question word, e.g. What, When, Where, Why.
We use:
What’s your name?
1 What to ask about things

Where do you work?


2 Where to ask about places

3 When to ask about time When do you usually go shopping?

4 Why to ask about reasons Why do you like your office?

1 In Wh- questions with the verb be, we use:
Wh- word + is/are + subject? 1 We contract is after
question words.
Where’s the shop?
2 We do not contract are
1 Where is your school? after question words.
2 Who’s your friend? What are your names?
3 When are your English lessons?

2 In Wh- questions with other verbs, we use:
Wh- word + do/does + subject + verb (infinitive without to) + …?

1 What do you eat for breakfast?

1 We use the present simple to talk about habits and routines.

I/You/We/They wear smart clothes in the office.
He/She likes coffee and tea.
It arrives at 3 p.m.
2 We usually add -s/es to the he/she/it form.
3 We make the negative form with don’t/doesn’t and no -s/es on the he/she/it
form.

1 We make questions in the present simple with do/does.

2 We can also use a Wh- question word.

5.3 Present simple – all forms

1 When we make yes/no questions (without a Wh- question word) we can give
short answers. We do not use the main verb in short answers.

1 Do you like modern clothes? Yes, I do. / No, I don’t.

Yes, it does. / No, it


2 Does it have a swimming pool? doesn’t.

Yes, they do. / No,


3 Do people use fake tan in your country?
they don’t.

Yes, she does. / No,


4 Does your sister work in the centre of town?
she doesn’t.
