1.0 INTRODUCTION
The RC51, RC52, RC53 Signal Conditioner manual provides information and
guidance for personnel responsible for the installation, operation and maintenance of
the RC51, RC52, RC53 Signal Conditioners manufactured by Flow Technology Inc.,
of Phoenix, Arizona. This manual also provides information detailing the operational
characteristics of the Signal Conditioners.
This manual does not contain information or instructions for custom application(s),
nor does it include instructions for conducting field repairs.
2.0 DESCRIPTION
The RC51, RC52, and RC51 units are part of a family of signal conditioners used to
interface turbine flowmeters with measurement, control, or readout equipment. The
RC51 is the standard signal conditioner. The RC52 has a scaling circuit (Refer to
Section 6.2). The RC53 is equipped with high/low alarm circuit (Refer to Section
6.3). The units accept low-level input signals from a turbine flowmeter and provide
pulse output, analog current and voltage signals that are proportional to the volume
of the fluid passing through the turbine flowmeter.
The converters operate automatically and do not contain any operator controls. The
unit is tested and calibrated to customer specifications at the factory and further
calibration is not normally required.
The RC51, RC52, and the RC53 all share a common printed circuit board. Not all
components are used on all models. Refer to Figure 1 for an exploded view of the
RC Signal Conditioner. For Signal and Power Connections, refer to Figures 2, 3 and
4. For the Power Board Component Layout, refer to Figure 5 and to Section 7.2 for
Schematics.

alarm circuit, RC53 only. Provides relay closures at preset points that can be
used for control or warning systems.
4.1 INSPECTION
The Signal Conditioners are calibrated and tested prior to shipment. The equipment
is ready for immediate installation upon receipt. However, the unit should be
checked to assure that no damage occurred during shipping. A visual inspection for
broken or loose components should be conducted.
4.2 WIRING
Wiring connections for signal and power, on units in enclosures with conduit hubs,
are made to a terminal strip located on the Power Supply Circuit Board. Refer to
Figure 5 for the Power Supply Circuit Board Layout and Typical Dimensions. Refer
to Figure 6 for the Main Board Layout. Refer to Figures 2, 3, and 4 for the Signal and
Power connections.
3 TM-87427
Figure 1 shows an exploded view of the Signal Conditioner boards. Terminal Block
1 (TB1) is located on the Power Supply Board. Access to this terminal block requires
removing the main board. By loosening the captive hardware, the main board can be
swung up to expose the power supply board. The cable assemblies may have to be
unplugged for easier access. Configuration may vary, depending on enclosure type.
Figures 2 & 3 show the appropriate connections for each of the signal inputs and/or
outputs to the terminal block for units without MS connectors. To install these units,
the mating connectors installed on the signal cables must have the same pin
designations. The maximum gauge wire that can be used is 16 AWG and the
minimum is 28 AWG.
NOTE
The terminal block screws should be backed
completely out to the stop when attempting
to install wires.
The RC51, RC52, and the RC53 have provisions for grounding the unit when using
AC power. This feature provides for the safety of operating personnel, and is
recommended by the National Electrical Manufacturer's Associations (NEMA).
Figure 2 shows the pin out designations for units that are AC powered. For
placement of the 120Vac operation power selected jumpers W2 and W3, and for
placement of W4 for the 220Vac operation, refer to Figure 12.
Figure 4 shows the pin out designations when MS connectors are used in conjunction
with a NEMA 4X fiberglass enclosure (See Figure 7). All wiring from TB1 on the
power supply board inside the NEMA 4X enclosure has been brought out to the two
MS connectors as shown in Figure 3. The user need only wire the mating connector
to suit the application.
4 TM-87427
4.2.3 Wiring For 24 VDC Powered Unit
Figure 3 shows the external wiring connections to TB1 for units operating on 24
VDC power.
The RC50 family of Signal Conditioners have been derived from the same basic
design and are constructed similarly, sharing the same board and many of the same
components.
The configuration of the common board is altered to produce the RC51, the RC52,
and the RC53 by placing different combinations of jumpers between points A, B, C,
D, E, and F on the power supply board (See Figure 5).
The RC51 and RC53 have been configured internally to accept conditioned pulse
input or optional frequency input (in conjunction with one of the EG&G Flow
Technology preamplifier plug-in modules).
4.2.4.2 RC52
The alarms may be set for High/Low operation, or with both either High or Low.
Refer to the Field Calibration and Set Up Section 7.0 and schematics for details on
the alarm configurations. Refer to Figure 6 for component layout.
The signal wires are connected as required by the user's equipment. One wire is
connected to the wiper (WIP) terminal, and the other wire is connected to either the
normally open (N.O.) or the normally closed (N.C.) terminal, depending on the user
requirements.

6.0 FIELD CALIBRATION AND SET UP
Although the unit is calibrated at the factory, a change in user requirements (flow
rate) or a malfunction may require the unit to be calibrated in the field by the user.
The following procedures will describe how the field calibration can be
accomplished. All units will not have all of the outputs; therefore, the user should
follow the procedures that are applicable to the specific unit. Refer to Figures 12, 13,
and 14 for schematics.
All terminal numbers refer to terminal block TB1 (standard connector). If the MS
connector option has been selected, refer to the interconnect diagrams, Figures 2, 3,
and 4 to determine equivalent pins.
CAUTION
The LFA and the CA modules may require recalibration if the module itself is
replaced or the flowmeter is replaced:
b. Apply power from appropriate power source (See Specifications Section 5.0
for particular model and power).
c. Observe the 45KHz carrier signal (on pin 16) and adjust the potentiometer on
the LFA module to achieve an 11 Volts ±1V peak-to-peak signal.
28 TM-87427
6.1.3 FTV (Frequency to Voltage) Module
If the flowmeter is changed, recalibrated, or the FTV module is changed, the module
should be recalibrated.
b. Calibration procedure:
(1) From the Calibration Data Sheet for the flowmeter determine (by interpolation if
necessary) the maximum frequency at the maximum flow rate of the flowmeter.
(2) This maximum frequency will be set equal to 10 Volts (or other
maximum specified analog output).
(3) Select a resistor value, from the Resistor Selection Chart on Table 1, that
corresponds to the maximum frequency.
(4) If the selected resistor value is different from the resistor in R7, change it
to the new value. R7 is located on the main printed circuit board, next to
the FTV module.
NOTE
It is easier to change the resistor if you first remove the FTV
module. R7 must be a film resistor with a temperature coefficient of
50 ppm/oC or better.
(6) Connect DVM to the terminal barrier strip, TB1, the positive (+) lead to
pin 9 (0-10VDC) and the negative (-) lead to pin 10 (common).
(7) Connect the Signal Generator positive (+) or high lead to pin 5 (where module
plugs in) and negative (-) or low lead to terminal barrier strip TB1 pin 12
(common).
(8) Set the Signal Generator for square wave generation at 10 to 15 Volts peak- to-
peak, at frequency corresponding to maximum frequency derived in Step (1).
29 TM-87427
(9) Set DVM to "Volts DC" on the 10 Volt scale.
(11) Adjust the SPAN potentiometer on the FTV module to attain a reading
of 10 Volts ±1mV on the DVM.
(12) Disconnect the signal generator. Reading on the DVM should go to zero
(0), or less than 10 mV.
(13) Reconnect the signal generator to verify that the voltage output goes to 10 Volts.

6.1.4 VTC (Voltage to Current) Module
Field calibration of the VTC module should NOT be attempted. The module should
be replaced or returned to the factory for service.
The Model RC52 Signal Conditioner has a Scaling Circuit (Refer to Figure 14) that
must be scaled to provide a given number of pulses equal to a specified unit of
volume. For example, if the total flow is in tenths of a gallon, it must be scaled so
that 10 counts equals 1 gallon of flow. This resolution may be changed by changing
the scaling.
The RC52 is calibrated for the specific application in which it is used by setting up
the scaling system on the switches located on the scaling printed circuit board. See
Figure 14.
1. Determine the average K-factor for the turbine flowmeter from the
Flowmeter Calibration Data Sheet.
2. The RC52 uses a decade divider, i.e. the divider number is 1, 10, 100,
1000, or 10,000. Determine the Divider Number (D) by first
calculating D using the equation:
D=KxR
where:
Select the Divider Number (1, 10, 100, 1000 or 10,000) that falls just
below D from the equation, e.g., K = 40223; R = 0.1; D = 40223 x
0.1 = 4022.3 therefore, Divider Number is 1000. (The largest Divider
Number which is less than D = 4022.3).
31 TM-87427
3. Set this Divider Number into switch S5 by setting the individual
segments in accordance with the table below: (X = ON; O = OFF)
TABLE 2

where:
M = Scaling Multiplier
D = Scaling Divider Number (See Step 2)
K = Flowmeter K-factor (From Data Sheet)
R = Desired Totalizer Resolution: 0.0001, 0.1, etc.
NOTE
The Divider Number (D) is selected so that
the multiplier (M) will fall between 0.1000
and 0.9999.
For example: 0.2497. This number will be set into switches S1 through
S4 on the scaling printed circuit board (See Figure 14). Switch S1 is
the most significant digit (MSD) and S4 is the least significant digit
(LSD). Each of the four digits will be set in switches S1, S2, S3, and
S4 by setting the individual segments of each in accordance with the
following binary coded table: (X = ON; O = OFF).

6.3 RC53 ALARM SETTINGS
The RC53 Signal Conditioner is equipped with a high/low alarm circuit that can be
configured to activate a relay for batch and/or shutdown functions. Refer to Figure 6
for the Alarm Relay Output Connections.
The high/low alarm circuit is adjustable over the 0 to 10V range from the FTV
module, using R3 and R5 trimpots.

It is recommended that one set of printed circuit boards and one set of modules be
maintained as spare parts for each group of five, or less, of the units in service. The
specific components contained in a particular unit will depend on the configuration
for use; therefore, the model number will indicate which components are required.
The part numbers of spare parts are shown in Table 4.
