Troubleshooting
Threading is only the first step in using the sewing machine. When starting to sew, you may encounter some
problems.
1. Jammed threads 2. Broken needles 3. Loosen stitches 4. Puckered seams
5. Stuck fabrics 6. Terrible loops 7. Strange noise

Skipping Stitches The wrong size of a needle is used. Use the appropriate needle size for the fabric.

Lint or dirt around the bobbin case. Check the bobbin area for dirt, lint, or knots of
thread.
Looped Stitches Small loops indicate tension may be unbalanced. Check the tension control and threading.
Big loops occur due to improper threading.

bobbin area.
Characteristics of Good Stitches
1. The length of stitch is proportioned to the texture of the fabric.
2. The stitches are the same in length.
3. The stitches appear the same on both right and wrong sides of the fabric.
4. The stitching follows the intended line smoothly and accurately.
5. There are no skipped or broken gaps in stitching.
6. When retraced, it appears as one line of stitching.
7. The stitching has no tangles.
Basic Sewing Machine Maintenance
1. Unplug your sewing machine and remove needle, thread spool, and bobbin.
2. Remove lint from the exterior of your machine by gently wiping the machine casing and exposed parts with a
soft, lint-free cloth. Remove stubborn dirt stains with a dampened cloth and mild soap.
3. Use a small lint brush and/or canned, compressed air to remove lint from thread guides and other tight areas.
4. Move the side plate toward you as far as it will go and remove the throat plate. Some throat plates can be snapped
out of position, others must be unscrewed.
5. Remove lint from area in and around bobbin case with a lint brush.

6. Remove excess lint from in and around bobbin case by removing bobbin case, and using tweezers to extract lint
that has been packed under bobbin case.
7. Place one or two drops of machine oil in oiling points on the sewing machine.
Care of Sewing Machine
 Unplug your machine if not in use.
 Always use the sewing machine oil only.
 A can of compressed air is handy to blow out hard to reach lint.
 Remember the things that you are removing from the machine, like the screws.
 Once you removed small things from the machine, put them in tray or box.

FT1. Write T if the statement given is a fact and F if it is wrong.

T 1. Stitch length is adjusted to suit the texture of the fabric.
T 2. Although all sewing machines operate in a similar manner, there are differences in makes and models.
T 3. When it comes to needles, the higher the number the finer the needle
T 4. The bobbin holds the bottom thread in a machine
F 5. Except for machines that have a bobbin winder built into the case, bobbins must be removed from the bobbin case in
order
to be wrapped.
T 6. When winding a bobbin, the first step is to loosen the hand-wheel knob to stop movement of the needle.
F 7. If the bobbin winder does not have an automatic shutoff, wind the bobbin only about half full.
T 8. To insert the bobbin, begin by opening the slide plate that covers the bobbin case.
F 9. The placement of thread guides is identical for all machines.
T 10. The presser foot holds fabric together against the feed dog, which moves the fabric forward.
T 11. One of the most common causes of stitching problems is incorrect threading.
F 12. The stitches appear the same on both right and wrong sides of the fabric.
FT2. Discuss the possible solutions for the following sewing machine problems.
1. Why is there excessive noise while sewing?

2. Why is the machine running slowly?

3. What to do if the machine will not form stitches?

4. Why does the needle breaks or the needle gets bent/ blunt?

5. What to do if the top thread breaks frequently?

6. What to do if the bobbin thread breaks?

7. Why is the fabric not feeding and moving straight?

8. If the thread is shredding near the needle eye, what is the possible cause of it?

FT3. Complete the table below with the necessary information.

Troubles Causes Remedies
