Reflection of course Leadership and Management
Leadership is a research-based as well as a practical skill that encompasses an
individual's, group's, or organization's ability to "lead," influence, or direct other people, teams,
or organisations.Being a student of MSN year l semester ll I observed that effective leadership
and management is essential to develop an organization private as well as government. In
education institutions students will have an opportunity to integrate the frames, utilize major
organizational theories, and concepts to improve effective leadership practice within the larger
health care system. The role and impact of nurse leaders in health care organizations directly
impact on quality care of patients. Leadership and Management course in educational institutions
polish students to become effective leaders in future and develop leadership skills like decision
making, effective communication, confidence, responsibility, delegation etc.
The important qualities of healthcare companies that flourish in exhibiting sound
business practices and maintaining healthy and happy organizational environments include
strong and effective nursing leadership built on the concepts of trust, respect, and fairness,
according to your context. (Bobbio, Bellan, & Manganelli, 2012). According to Lee, Coustasse,
& Sikula (2011), all nursing healthcare environments are influenced not just by organisational
variables but also by personal elements, leadership is vital in the nursing industry. (Gocsik &
Barton, 2014). More importantly, the fundamentals of nursing leadership encourages those who
are in the nursing profession not only to become more engaged and competent in performing
their basic healthcare functions, but also to provide exemplary and quality care while thinking
independently and critically within their healthcare settings(Sellgren, Ekvall, & Tomson, 2008).
Prior to the semester beginning I was thinking about the leadership and management
course I was mentally pre occupied with the thoughts that this course will help only the senior

students who are doing the role of managers having many years of clinical experience. For the
junior students like me, it will not benefit more. Further I was thinking that this course will focus
more on theoretical aspects of nursing leadership and bookish knowledge rather than the
practical aspects. I was thinking that a lot of study will be required as the class participation is
more weightage than other courses therefore it will be difficult to share my points in short time
as everyone will try to take more time in their turn to gain more score. Thinking about the project
assignment I thought that it will be difficult to manage and will be boring because of all subjects
burden and time shortage. I was also thinking that the course will be like other traditional
subjects in which the teacher will delivering the lecture and students will listening to the teacher
and participate only in the question answer session. I was thinking that teaching methodology
will not be interesting but on the first day when the course faculty shared and explained the
course grid in the introductory class I felt that it will be more interesting. On first project
assignment I took little participation I read more the book of leadership and management rather
than the question related to the scenario, but my instructor suggested me focus on your concern
scenario with the help of different books and clinical based study. In the second time I read the
questions thoroughly and prepared myself accordingly and participate more. The faculty was
doing ongoing student participation evaluation on the spot marking the points share by the
student. The good thing in the problem base learning PBL was that students are involved in
different strategies rather than just books study .Due to this strategy repetition of points was
avoided. All the participants were sharing their real experiences according to their project which
made every session very interactive and more interesting.
On the other hand Position paper assignment was very informative and new strategy.
Every student has select unique practical scenario and was much relevant to the clinical or

educational career having implications to professional or organizational aspects. It was
interesting that everyone was discussing the nature of the issue differently from the other student
based on their understanding. Similarly everyone was describing the role of the key players
differently, strategy increased the learning of how to do root cause analysis of the situation in
various scenario.
According to my evaluation this course was very informative, helpful and mind
broadening. It help me a lot while analyzing different situations. I realized that leadership and
management course is important for each and every student wither on high post or lower having
experience of few or many years. This course enable me how to analyze and evaluate the
concepts (ethical dilemmas, attitude problem, negligence, malpractice, incompetence, etc) were
somewhat the same in each PBL but the experience and the solutions of the issues were different.
This triggered my brain to think differently and uniquely, other than the routine. Different
leadership styles and managerial skills, which was somewhere lost, were re-emerged in my mind
while discussing each case.
After attending this course, I analyze that leadership is not only to lead but a leader is
who facilitates their subordinates, and can manage them according to their strengths. This also
shows the good leadership and management qualities of the teacher that should be acquired by
the students. The time and content management are done by the faculty were excellent, as all the
PBL’s was completed within the expected time-framed and no case was similar to the other one.
Madam facilitated me very well in the selection of cases, as I discussed she facilitated me very
well to select the case with different problems, so the student can learn more. While running my
PBL, madam also facilitated me when I was distracting. I felt that it was quite an interesting and
good experience to run a PBL in a new way.

The evaluation method was also very unique. Detailed feedback was given to every
individual. So I could able to know my strength and weaknesses. So I can improve myself. The
strategy of peer evaluation was also unique and good. I never experienced it. I think this strategy
can polish the teaching skills that we should keep the focus on every student while standing in
front of them. For me as a clinician, not a teacher, it was quite difficult to keep the focus on
everyone and keep remember that how was everyone in the class while discussing with the
madam in the feedback session.
Recommendations:
Overall, the course was beyond my expectations. I refreshed my concepts
of leadership and management. This course taught me that how I can make decisions and solves
issues in the future. If I will face similar problems in the future then I can reflect on this course
and can implement all the concepts. This course also taught me that everybody is a leader and
has some leadership qualities but the problem is that we do not know when and where we have to
use them. I also learned that we can influence other's wrong decisions by therapeutic
communication skills and our behavior can play a vital role while influencing other’s decisions,
as well as we can reflect on our own decisions.
