Questions On "Hunting The Elements" Video (20 Marks)

The document contains 15 multiple choice questions about elements and the periodic table. It provides short 1-3 sentence answers to each question about topics like: - The number of elements on the periodic table (approximately 110) - Common percentages of metals versus non-metals - The two metals that make up the alloy bronze (tin and copper) - What determines an element's identity and reactivity (the number of protons and electrons) - The six most common elements in living things (carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur) - Hydrogen making up about 75% of normal matter in the universe

Questions on “Hunting the Elements” Video (20 marks)

Name: Intan Ayuna Fahri

1.How many substances/elements are on the periodic table? (1)

Answer : Elements are pure substances. The atoms of each element are chemically distinct

and different from those of any other element. Approximately 110 elements are now known.

2.In the underground Cortez mine in Nevada, how much gold is produced from mining a ton
of rock? How much is produced from mining a ton of rock on the surface? (2)

Answer :

3. Roughly what percentage of the elements on the periodic table are metals? (1)

Answer : About 80 percent of the elements are metals (shiny elements that conduct heat and
electricity well)

4.The first man-made alloy (bronze) is comprised of what two metals? (2)

Answer : One of the first alloys made by humans was bronze, which is a mixture of

the metals tin and copper. Bronze was an extremely useful alloy to the ancients, because it is
much stronger and harder than either of its components. Steel was another common alloy.

5.Provide two reasons why is bronze still used in the manufacture of bells? (1)

Answer :

6.What determines what element an atom is? (1)

Answer : All atoms have a dense central core called the atomic nucleus. Forming the nucleus
are two kinds of particles: protons, which have a positive electrical charge, and neutrons,
which have no charge. All atoms have at least one proton in their core, and the number of
protons determines which kind of element an atom is.
7.One group of atoms on the periodic tables are known as “noble gases”. Why have they
been given this name? (1)

Answer : The noble gases are colorless, odorless, tasteless, and nonflammable under standard
conditions. They were once labeled group 0 in the periodic table because it was
believed they had a valence of zero, meaning their atoms cannot combine with those of other
elements to form compounds.

8.What determines the reactivity of an element? (1)

Answer : The number of electrons in the outermost shell of an atom determines its reactivity.

Noble gases have low reactivity because they have full electron shells. Halogens are
highly reactive because they readily gain an electron to fill their outermost shell.

9. What 6 elements make up all lifeforms on earth? (3)

Answer : The six most common elements in living things are carbon, hydrogen, oxygen,

nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur. Atoms of these elements combine and form thousands of
large molecules. These large molecules make up the structures of cells and carry out many
processes essential to life.

10. What percentage of atoms in the entire universe at hydrogen atoms? (1)?

Answer : Hydrogen and Helium. Hydrogen is an element, usually in the form of a gas, that

consists of one proton and one electron. Hydrogen is the most abundant element in
the universe, accounting for about 75 percent of its normal matter, and was created in the Big
Bang.

11.Pound for pound what is the most energetic reaction in the universe? What major source
of energy in our solar system is powered by this reaction? (2)

Answer :

12.Although most people think of silicon as the main ingredient in silicon chips that have
fueled the electronic age, what was it’s main use for hundreds of years before this? (1)

Answer :
13. Why are rare earth elements given their name? (1)

Answer : The elements scandium and yttrium are also known as the “rare earths” because
they were originally discovered together with the lanthanides in rare minerals and isolated as
oxides, or “earths.” The name is derived from Scandinavia, where the element was
discovered in the minerals euxenite and gadolinite.

14.Recently, it was discovered that rare earth elements can be used to repel what type of
animal? How do they do this? (1)

Answer : Rare earth metals are Landthanides – metals with a low electronegativity. Metals
with low electronegativity are called electropositive. Electropositive metals react vigorously
with water when immersed and generate electrical potentials

15.What’s an isotope and what determines how they differ from one another in a single
element ? (1)

Answer : Different isotopes of the same element have the same atomic number. They have

the same number of protons. The atomic number is decided by the number of
protons. Isotopes have different mass numbers, though, because they have different numbers
of neutrons.
