Course Description:
The UNAD, faithful to its mission as a leading organization in open and distance
education, plays an essential role in the advances related to the issue of globalization.
Therefore, its internationalization policy seeks to guide the steps of the national and
international community towards bilingual scenarios.
In accordance with the above, this course - English B2 - is part of the component of
the foreign language, which is presented in the curriculum guidelines of the academic
programs of UNAD. This theoretical-practical course has three (3) academic credits,
which includes independent study and tutorial or advisory accompaniment; this refers
to 200 hours of academic work distributed in 80 hours of independent study and 120
hours on tutorial monitoring, with following purposes:
Ø Recognizing and appropriating basic contents of English B2 course.
Ø Developing communicative competences and skills through oral comprehension
activities (audios and written reflections about audiovisual material) and written
comprehension activities (drafting, interpreting and developing contents), all
this for using English language in different stages of daily life.
Ø Encouraging students to learn English for their academic, professional and
personal context.
Ø Taking advantage of techno-didactics resources and technological tools
employed in the course, with the goal of learning a foreign language
autonomously and with tutorials accompaniment.

2. Course competence:

The course competence is:


To develop the student's ability to understand the main ideas of complex texts related
with his/her field of expertise. The student is able to interact with native English
speakers fluently and naturally, in order that communication can be clear for both
speakers. Besides, the student is able to produce detailed and clear texts about
different topics and stand for a point of view in general topics, giving opinions in favor
or against a specific topic.

3. Learning outcomes:

At the end of the course the student will be able to:


Learning Outcome 1: The student will be able to deal with the different grammatical
structures of verbal tenses, from the simpler up to the more complex structures.
Learning Outcome 2: The student will be able to understand main ideas of complex
audios and expressions related to different situations of everyday life.
Learning Outcome 3: The student will be able to maintain a conversation with
fluency and native like, so that the communication will be held effortlessly among
the speakers as well as to take an active part in daily-life debates, explaining and
defending his/her points of view.
Learning Outcome 4: The student will be able to understand the main ideas of
complex texts that deal with specific and abstract topics, even if they are from a
technical topic or if they belong to the students’ field of expertise.
Learning Outcome 5: The student will be able to produce clear and detailed texts
about different topics, as well as to stand for a point of view of general topics,
indicating arguments in favor or against. The student will be able to perform clear
and systematical presentations with emphasis in significant aspects, proposing
relevant support details using reported speech.
Learning Outcome 6: The student will be able to use the task based learning
strategy supported by the course and, all media and technology tools placed at his
disposal, including the ICT in order to obtain, select and present information in
written form as well as to identify present, past and future actions, through the use
of verbal forms of each time or the time marks in the narratives.

4. Learning Strategy:

The Learning Strategy for the course is: based on tasks.

This Learning Strategy is based on: the accomplishment of previous tasks to achieve
the main task that is composed of three stages, the preparation, the task itself and
the report, and finally, the subsequent tasks of language analysis and practice.

The Learning Strategy is organized in 6 tasks:

• Task 1: Previous knowledge – Diagnostic Test: Students practice online


activity to identify and process specific structures and strengthen
communication skills.
• Task 2: Focus on the listening – Listening Test: Students are encouraged to
practice online contents to improve their listening skills.
• Task 3: Focus on the speaking – Speaking Practice: The tutor leads the
practical activities where the students exercise the vocabulary and
pronunciation and improve their communication skills. The students deliver a
video recording as a final product.
• Task 4: Focus on the writing – Writing Forum: Students work in collaborative
groups. The tutor constantly accompanies the activity in each forum. Students
present a written text. Feedback, deep learning and reflection on the task.
• Task 5: Focus on the reading – Reding Test: Students are encouraged to
practice online contents to improve their reading skills.
• Task 6: Final Exam: Students, through the final objective test, will be able to
experiment the learning process of the course topics.

Unit 1: Future Events


In this unit, the following contents will be addressed:

• Module 1 - Future Continuous: Talk about events happening at a given point in


the future. Describe future experiences. Talk about the past in the future.
Understand and speak about activities in progress in the future.
• Module 2 - Future Perfect: Talk about the future. Echo for active listening.
Explore ways to talk about future plans and expectations.
• Module 3 - Past Participle: Speculate and hypothesize about the past. Make
negative deductions and speculations. Describe preferences for plans. Make
deductions and speculate about the present.
• Module 4 - Passive Voice: Talk about things that are done. Express emphasis on
what is done, in the past. Read and understand movie reviews. Change the
direction of a conversation.

Unit 2: Past Events


In this unit, the following contents will be addressed:

• Module 5 - Past Perfect: Understand past events in reference to other actions in


the past. Introduce new information in an argument. Talk about habits and
routines.
• Module 6 - Phrasal Verbs: Express actions with phrasal verbs. Express certainty,
possibility, and doubt. Talk about life in the future. Predict during a
conversation.
• Module 7 - Reported Speech: Report what someone said. Report commands.
React to conditions.
• Module 8 - Expressing Habits in the Past: Express habits in the past. Synthesize
and evaluate information.

Unit 3: Expressing feelings
In this unit, the following contents will be addressed:

• Module 9 - Will/going to for Prediction: Add additional information to nouns.


Paraphrase. Simplify additional information. Compare conditions. Describe
feeling and senses.
• Module 10 - Inversion with Negative Adverbials: Make predictions. Compare
intentions and spontaneous decisions. Use vague language and being imprecise

• Module 11 - Relative Clauses: Understand additional information in
communicative exchanges. Take the initiative in an interaction. Encourage
others to continue with the conversation.
• Module 12 - Mixed Modals: Express request, possibility and permission. Make
assumptions. Suggest and give commands. Express obligation, ability, and
possibility in the past. Express sympathy.
