What is Individualized Instruction?

Individualized instruction refers to educators using specific strategies,

resources and assessments that cater to the needs of learners in their class.
This process ensures that students are given guidance and flexibility in their
learning process, enhancing their academic growth along the way.

Individualized instruction is a method of instruction in which there is one-to-one teaching and

self-paced learning based on an outline of progressive goals leading to the course/curriculum
objectives.

 Individualized instruction focuses on the needs of the individual student.

 Teaching is specific and targets one need at a time.
 This teaching method can be used on its own, or it can be part of differentiated teaching.
 Some students who receive individualized instruction need teachers to help them
understand and learn.

Courses appropriate for individualized instruction are usually those that require skill building.
These include such courses as keyboarding, drafting, and computer skills. With adequate
planning and appropriate instructional materials, theory courses can be successfully taught using
the individualized instruction method. One key to the success of individualized instruction is the
quality of the lesson plans.

 Individualized instruction allows a student who is above or below "average" to proceed at

the student’s own pace for optimal learning.
 Students do not have to repeat portions of a course that they have already mastered.
 Students learn the self-discipline needed to motivate themselves and to keep their
progress on target.
 Students can check their own results on class work and seek help when needed.

Why is individualized instruction important?

 Meeting the varied needs of children can be a daunting task for educators. Its most
definitely takes more planning and assessment of student progress, but the benefits far
outweigh the cons. Individualized instruction prepares children to become active and
effective learners developing the skills needed to be life-long learners in an ever evolving
world. With the varied aptitude levels of children, individualized instruction helps use the
differences of children to increase moral, retain information, and enhance children’s
engagements in their learning
Individualized instruction provides the opportunity for students to learn at their own pace,
in their own way, and be successful. At-risk students who would probably drop out of school,
stay and graduate. Alternative schools have found individualized instruction valuable.

Individualized instruction is where students’ personal needs are placed at

the forefront of an instructor’s teaching practices. Here, technology, content
and pace of learning depend on the abilities of individual students in a class.
Five steps to individualization in the classroom include

– Set clear and specific goals

– Make goals challenging and realistic
– Make goals dynamic and review regularly
– Let students own their progress
– Involve parents or academic advisors when necessary
