Biology CELLS Worksheet

This document contains a student's biology assignment responses on cells. It includes questions on cell organelles, types of plant and animal cells, red blood cells, the functions of the nucleus and cell membrane, tissues, and calculating magnification. The key points covered are: - Cells have organelles like the cell membrane, chloroplasts, and nucleus. - Palisade mesophyll and root hair cells have adaptations for photosynthesis and absorption. - Red blood cells carry oxygen and carbon dioxide while lacking a nucleus for increased hemoglobin. - The nucleus regulates the cell and contains DNA while the cell membrane protects and regulates exchange. - Tissues are groups of cells that work together to perform a function. - M

Cells

1. A - Cell membrane

2. C - 2 and 3

3. B - It has no chloroplasts

4. A - Cell

5. B - The heart is an organ, containing several tissues, which forms part of the circulatory
system.

Structured Questions

1.
i)

ii) The chemical that this genetic material is made from is DNA.

iii)
iv) The process carried out by the chloroplasts is called photosynthesis.

2.

a)
i. Palisade mesophyll cells
ii. Root hair cells

b)
i. The cell wall is thin in palisade cells that result in larger penetration of light into the cell
structure and higher diffusion rate.
ii. Root hair cells are adapted for taking up water and mineral ions by having a large
surface area to increase the rate of absorption.

c) Three structures found in both types of cells are a cell wall, cell membrane and vacuole.

3.
i. The function of red blood cells is to carry oxygen from the lungs to the body and
carbon dioxide as a waste product, from the body and back to the lungs.
ii. There are two advantages of human red blood cells not containing a nucleus. They
are:
- The absence of a nucleus allows red blood cells to have more haemoglobin. The more
haemoglobin you have, the more oxygen molecules you can carry. Therefore, it permits
the red blood cells to transfer more oxygen.
- The lack of a nucleus in red blood cells also allows the cell to have a unique bi-concave
shape, which helps with diffusion.

4.

a) The functions of the nucleus are to regulate the cell metabolism by synthesizing various
enzymes, it contains the genetic information of the cell (DNA), it is the site for the
synthesis of ribonucleic acid, and ribosome production also takes place inside the
nucleus. The functions of the cell membrane are to provide protection for the cell and
help in the exchange of substances in and out of the cell.

b) A tissue is a group of cells that work together to perform a particular function.

c) The role of mucus is to protect epithelial cells in the linings of the trachea. The role of
cilia in the trachea is to sweep fluids and foreign particles out of the airway so that they
stay out of the lungs.
5. Length of AB = 69 mm

𝐿𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ 𝑜𝑓 𝐴𝐵
Magnification =
𝐴𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑙 𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛
69
Magnification =
7.5
= 9.2

∴ Magnification = × 9
