What is
Civil Engineering?
CIVIL ENGINEERING
 IS A PROFESSIONAL
ENGINEERING DISCIPLINE
THAT DEALS WITH THE
DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION, AND
MAINTAINCE AND NATURALLY
BUILT ENVIRONMENT.
 PUBLIC WORKS;
What is
Civil Engineer?
CIVIL ENGINEER
 CREATE, IMPROVE, AND PROTECT
THE ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH WE
LIVE.
 PLAN, DESIGN, AND OVERSEE
CONSTRUCTION, AND
MAINTAINANCE OF THE BUILDING
STRUCTURES AND
INFRASTRUCTURES.
 DESIGN AND BUILD TALL
BUILDINGS THAT CAN WITH
STAND ALL WEATHER
CONDITIONS.
TWO TYPES OF
CIVIL ENGINEERS
CONSULTING ENGINEERS
 RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DESIGN
WORK OF PROJECTS AND WORK
PREDOMINANTLY IN AN OFFICE.

CONTRACTING ENGINEERS
 TAKE THE DESIGNS AND
IMPLEMENT THEM DURING
CONSTRUCTION. WORK ON SITE,
MANAGING THE CONSTRUCTION
OF STRUCTURE.
CIVIL
ENGINEERING
AS COURSE
BS CIVIL
ENGINEERING
 Is a program designed to teach
students the basic principles of
science and mathematical used in
engineering.
 The program covers the five
essential fields of civil engineering:
STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING
TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING
WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING
GEO-TECHNICAL ENGINEERING
CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING
 It also aims to provide students
with technical skills and
knowledge in:

PLANNING DESIGN
CONSTRUCTION
SUPERVISION
MAINTENANCE OF CIVIL
ENGINEERING WORKS
Why is it called Civil
Engineering?
CIVIL
 Of or relating to the people
who live in a country – Merriam-
webster dictionary
 of or relating to
the ordinary people of
a country, rather than member
s of religious organizations or
the military – Cambridge English
dictionary

 Civis meaning citizens

ENGINEERING
• the branch of science and
technology concerned with
the design, building, and use
of engines, machines, and
structures. – Oxford Dictionary
•  derived from the Latin
ingenium, meaning
"cleverness" and ingeniare,
meaning "to contrive, devise".
CIVIL ENGINEERING
It is one of the sciences of
constructing the basic
necessity of civilians such as
shelters, place of work,
transportation, etc.
MILITARY ENGINEERING
 Civil engineering was formerly
called military engineering
 The art and practice of designing
and building military works and of
building and maintaining lines of
military transport and
communications.  - Britannica.com
 In peacetime military engineers
also carry out a wide variety of
civil-works programs. – Britannica.com

OF CIVIL ENGINEERING
ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING
 A technical discipline
concerned with the study,
design and application of
equipment, devices and
systems.
THAT USE:
electricity electronics
electromagnetism.
ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING
IN CONSTRUCTION SITES
 Design High Voltage
Equipment, such as:
wiring system

lighting system

& generators
 Survey the site and manage the
design and construction of
electrical systems so that they
comply with the necessary codes.
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
 One of the oldest and
boldest of the engineering
discipline.
 A discipline that applies:
Engineering Maintain
mathematics mechanical system
Materials science
physics
principles to design.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
IN CONSTRUCTION SITES
 Mechanical Engineers are
accountable for:
designing building
installing
maintaining all kinds
of mechanical machinery, tools,
and components.
 Responsible for making sure all
machinery on a given project is
constructed and installed correctly.
SANITARY ENGINEERING
 the application of
engineering methods to
improve sanitation of
human communities.
PROVIDING:
removal and disposal of
human waste
addition to the supply of
safe potable water.
SANITARY ENGINEERING
IN CONSTRUCTION SITES
  Designs and
directs construction and
operation of hygienic
projects such as:

water works sewage

garbage trash disposal plants

drainage system insect & rodent

control projects
HISTORY OF
CIVIL ENGINEERING
EARLIEST ENGINEERS
• 3300 B.C. - Egyptians
develop dikes and
canals.
• Archeological records
show the builders used
primitive surveying
instruments to lay out
the canals.

civil engineering
constructions include
the Qanat water

(the oldest is older than
3000 years and longer
than 71 km),
the Parthenon by Iktinos in
Ancient Greece (447–438
BC), the Appian Way by
Roman engineers (c. 312
BC), the Great Wall of
China by General Meng
T'ien under orders from
Ch'in Emperor Shih Huang

bridges, dams and
roads.

18TH CENTURY
In the 18th century,
the term civil
engineering was
coined to incorporate
all things civilian as
opposed to military
engineering.
18TH CENTURY
Civil engineering was
broadly defined as
those developments
that were not
exclusive to the
military, such as
water management,
roads and bridges.
The first
engineering school,
The National School
of Bridges and
Highways, France,
was opened in
1747.
• The first self-
proclaimed civil
engineer was John
Smeaton, who
constructed the
Eddystone
Lighthouse.
EDDY STONE
LIGHTHOUSE
John Smeaton first to
use the title “civil
engineer” he started the
Smeatonian Society of
Civil Engineers. It was
the first engineering
society to be formed
anywhere in the world
and remains the oldest
and, also a group of
leaders of the profession
who met informally over
dinner but, turned into
more of a social group
than a true professional
organization.
Instead the
Institution of
Civil Engineers
became the
first true
professional
society,
receiving its
royal charter
in London in
1828.
In the U.S., its
first engineering
school opened in
1819 and was
named Norwich
University.
THE MODERN APPROACH
Today, civil engineering
addresses complex
design with advanced
technology. CAD and
CAM help with design,
creation and testing of
structure simulations.
THE MODERN APPROACH
It works well whether a
civil engineer is
addressing flood plain
management, designing
a bridge or planning
roadways.
DIFFERENCE OF
CIVIL ENGINEERING
AND ARCHITECTURE
CIVIL ENGINEERS
 work with complicated
designs where a background
in math, as well as skills in
problem-solving, can aid in
finding solutions to issues
that may arise with the
development of projects.
ARCHITECTS
 design various buildings
and structures that include
office buildings and houses.
Architects must have great
creativity and vision to
ensure the project looks
attractive to clients.
