Cummins: Fault Code: 286 PID: S231 SPN: 639 FMI: 13

This document provides troubleshooting steps for fault code 286 related to J1939 datalink multiplexing on a Cummins engine. The fault occurs when the ECM is set up to receive information from multiplexed switches from one or more VECUs but is only receiving some of the switches. The troubleshooting process involves verifying that the ECM and VECU configurations match the actual vehicle inputs and components. The steps check the physical wiring of inputs to the VECU, compare the ECM and VECU settings, and adjust the settings if needed so they are in agreement. Once settings are verified to match, the fault can be disabled and codes cleared.

J1939 DATALINK MULTIPLEXING

CUMMINS

FAULT CODE: 286

PID: S231
SPN: 639
FMI: 13

J1939 Datalink Multiplexing Circuit

DESCRIPTION
Inputs, such as throttle pedals, switches, and sensors, can be
communicated to the ECM over the J1939 datalink. Messages sent from
the vehicle electronic control units (VECUs) are received by the ECM
and used for controlling the engine. Both the ECM and VECU must be
properly configured so that each device’s information is transmitted by
the VECU and received by the ECM.
This fault occurs when the ECM is set up to receive information from
several multiplexed switches from VECU(s) and only receives some of
the switches. It indicates the ECM is set up to receive too many
switches or the VECU(s) is set up to transmit too few switches.
COMPONENT LOCATION
The ECM is located on the intake side of the engine, about mid-engine.
The J1939 datalink wiring and VECU(s) vary by OEM options.

.TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS
Step 1A) Turn key switch ON and connect to the vehicle VECU with OEM service tool. Check that the
vehicle inputs are multiplexed. Determine which input devices (throttle, cruise switches, clutch switch, etc.)
are wired to the vehicle’s VECU (s). Using OEM service tool, verify the VECU is configured properly.

Physical input devices to VECU match VECU configuration?

Yes - Go to 1B No - Change multiplex settings

Go to 2B

Step 1B) Connect the datalink adapter to the engine and PC. Connect diagnostic tool, turn key switch ON
and start the diagnostic tool job. ECM settings match devices installed on vehicle. Read the ECM settings for
devices using diagnostic tool. Information for settings in menu: Adjustments - Features and Parameters 2.

Diagnostic tool readout matched ECM settings for devices (Devices in Step 1B match Step 1A)?

Yes - Go to 3A No - Go to 2A

Step 2A) Start diagnostic tool and connect to ECM. Change ECM setting to match VECU configuration. If
the ECM is set up to receive any of the parameters that the VECU(s) is not transmitting over the datalink,
turn off multiplexing for those parameters in the ECM using the diagnostic tool.

ECM setting now matches VECU configuration?

Yes - Go to 3A No - Check OEM multiplex settings

Go to 1A

Step 2B) Install OEM service tool and turn key switch ON. Change the setting of the VECU(s) to transmit all
information. VECU(s) is not set up to transmit information from all of the devices connected to it. Change the
setting in the VECU(s). Refer to OEM manual for instruction.

VECU(s) parameters match all input devices that are wired to VECU(s)?

Yes - Go to 3A No - Check OEM multiplex settings

Go to 1A

Step 3A) Connect all components and turn key switch ON. Disable the fault code. Start the engine, and let
idle for 1 minute using the diagnostic tool to verify that Fault Code 286 is inactive.

Fault Code 286 inactive?

Yes - Go to 3B No - Return to the troubleshooting steps or contact

local Cummins Authorized Repair Location if all
steps have been completed and checked again
Go to 1A

Step 3B) Connect all components and turn key switch ON. Clear the inactive fault codes using the
diagnostic tool.
All fault codes cleared?

Yes - Repair is complete No - Troubleshoot any remaining active fault codes

with appropriate troubleshooting steps.
