OmniClass is a construction classification system originating in the US that integrates previous systems. It is divided into 15 tables that classify entities, spaces, elements, work results, products, phases, and other aspects of construction projects. While comprehensive, its limitation is a lack of flexibility in incorporating new parameters. The system can be used with Revit and ArchiCAD classification tools and exported to IFC for interoperability.

Conclusions

• General classification system, encompassing almost all aspects of a


construction project (technical, financial, human resources,
document management, etc.)

• Caveat: lack of flexibility to include newly available products

• Widely used and documented

• (Relatively) smooth integration with software tools


• Revit: Classification Manager add-in
• ARCHICAD 18 and 19: Omniclass tables available (*)
• Can be exported to IFC as classification systems (IfcClassificationReference)
or via Property Sets
