Cooking Up Fractions

M6N1. Students will understand the meaning of the four arithmetic operations as
related to positive rational numbers and will use these concepts to solve
problems.
o d. Add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with unlike
denominators.
o e. Multiply and divide fractions and mixed numbers.
Materials:
Recipe from Internet or Cookbook
Digital camera, Computer with Powerpoint or Photostory.

Task Requirements:
Each student must find a recipe that contains at least 2
fractions in the ingredients.
Copy the original recipe.
Rewrite the recipe showing an increase in the serving
size to serve double the original serving size in the
recipe.
Rewrite the recipe showing a decrease in the serving
size to serve half the original serving size in the recipe.
Create a Recipe Booklet.
-Screen/slide 1: Name of Recipe and picture of the finished
product.

Write the original recipe.
o Example:
1 small frozen banana, cut into chunks
1/2 cup plain low-fat yogurt
1/4 cup orange juice
Put all ingredients into the blender and whirl until smooth. These
are
fairly thick. Add more liquid if you want them thinner.
Makes 2 servings,
each having 125 calories, 213 mg calcium, 10 mg vitamin C, 7
grams protein, and 160 mg sodium.
