Merging Result (OCN)

Here are the steps to solve this problem: 1) Given: - Core refractive index n1 = 1.50 - Cladding refractive index n2 = 1.47 2) Critical angle θc at core-cladding interface: Using the formula sinθc = n2/n1 sinθc = 1.47/1.50 θc = sin-1(1.47/1.50) = 41.8° 3) Numerical aperture NA: NA = n1sinθc = 1.50sin41.8° = 0.51 4) Acceptance angle θa in air: Using the formula NA = n

OCN ASSIGNMENT 2

Q1. A 10km parabolic profile graded index optical fiber with a relative refractive index difference of 2%
exhibits an rms pulse broadening of 350 ps over its length, estimate the refractive index at the core axis
and determine the numerical aperture of the fiber.

Q2. A multimode step index fiber has a relative refractive index difference of 2% and core refractive
index of 1.48. The maximum optical bandwidth that may be obtained with a particular source on a 5km
link is 3Mhz. Determine the rms pulse broadening per kilometre resulting from chromatic dispersion
mechanisms. Assuming waveguide dispersion to be negligible, estimate the rms spectral width of the
source used, if the material dispersion parameter for the fiber at the operating wavelength is 80 ps nm -1
km-1.

Q3. A 10 km optical link consists of a multimode step index fiber with a core refractive index of 1.46 and
a relative refractive index difference of 2%. Estimate the delay difference between the slowest and the
fastest modes at the fiber output, the maximum bit rate that may be obtained without substantial error
on the link assuming only intermodal dispersion and the bandwidth distance product (BDP).

Q4. The radiative and nonradiative recombination lifetimes of the minority carriers in the active region
of a double-heterojunction LED are 30 ns and 60 ns respectively. Determine the total carrier
recombination lifetime and the power generated internally within the device when the peak emission
wavelength is 1550nm at a drive current of 50 mA.

OCN ASSIGNMENT 1

Q1. If the step index fiber has core and cladding refractive indices of 1.5 and 1.46 respectively with a
core diameter of 80µm, assuming the fiber is kept in air calculate the numerical aperture, relative
refractive index difference acceptance angle, critical angle and pulse broadening per unit length due to
multipath dispersion.

Q2. A graded index fiber with parabolic index profile supports the propagation of 600 guided modes.
The fiber has a numerical aperture in air of 0.3 and core diameter of 50µm. Determine the wavelength
of light propagating in the fiber and estimate the maximum diameter of the fiber which gives single
mode operation at the same wavelength.

Q3. The mean optical power launched into an optical fiber link is 2 mW and the fiber has attenuation of
0.4dB/km. Determine the maximum possible link length without repeaters (assuming lossless
connectors) when the minimum mean optical power level required at the detector is 5µW.

Q4. A 1km length multimode step index fiber has a spectral width of 50nm with intermodal and
intramodal dispersion of 10 ns/km and 100 ps/km respectively. Calculate the total dispersion and
maximum bit rate.

the fiber in air.

3) A multimode step index fiber with a core diameter of 80 μm and a

single-mode operation when the core refractive index and radius are 1.46
and 4.5 μm, respectively, with the relative index difference being 0.25%. [

characteristic index profile (α) of 1.90, a relative refractive index
difference of 1.3% and a core diameter of 40 μm. Estimate the number of
guided modes propagating in the fiber when the transmitted light has a
wavelength of 1.55 μm, and determine the cutoff value of the normalized
frequency for single-mode transmission in the fiber. [94, 3.45 ]

7) A graded index fiber with a parabolic index profile supports the

propagation of 742 guided modes. The fiber has a numerical aperture in
air of 0.3 and a core diameter of 70 μm. Determine the wavelength of the
light propagating in the fiber. Further estimate the maximum diameter of
the fiber which gives single-mode operation at the same wavelength.
