Lesson
Multi-Step Routine and
1 Non-Routine Problems
There are math problems that need to use multi-step or two or more operations
to solve. Some of those problems can be categorized as routine problems and the other
are non-routine problems. If you find the problem common to you and its content is
very ordinary, it is considered as routine problems. It is the problem we are used to in
our daily lives. Non-Routine problems are problems that are unusual or the way to solve
it is quite hard to see at the first encounter. It is good to note that the more you know
problems you solve, the more it makes some non-routine problems become a routine
problem in your part.

Lesson
Division of 3- to 4-digit Numbers
by 1-to 2-Digit Numbers without
1 and with Remainder
Division is a mathematical process of dividing a number into equal groups.
Learning to divide is much easier for students when they have an understanding of
multiplication concepts because division is the opposite of multiplication.

What’s In

Fill in blanks with the correct answer. Choose your answer from the list below.

Divisor Remainder Quotient Dividend

 The number which we divide is called the __________________.

 The number by which we divide is called the _______________.
 The result obtained is called the ___________________________.
 The number left over is called the __________________________.

What’s New

Read and analyze the problem.

Raynan celebrated his 9th

birthday. He invited his 135
schoolmates. If he was able to
print 9 invitation cards per hour,
how many hours did he spend in
printing the invitation cards?

4
 Who celebrated his 9th birthday?
 Who were invited in his birthday?
 Do you invite your friends to celebrate with you on your birthday? Why?
 Do you think it is right to invite someone on your birthday in this times of
pandemic?
 Looking at the problem, what does it ask for? How will you solve for the answer?

What is It

To solve the above problem, we have to divide 135 by 9.

The following are the steps in dividing whole numbers: 135 ÷ 9 =

Step 1. DIVIDE

Step 2. MULTIPLY

Step 3. SUBTRACT

Step 4. BRING
DOWN

Repeat the procedure until the dividend is 0 or less than the divisor.

In dividing 2 digits by 3 to 4 digits, just

follow the same steps: divide, multiply,
subtract, and bring down; and do not
forget to check your answer. Study the
examples below.

Let us have another problem.

Ana helped her mother repack 200 canned goods to be given to 10 families who were
affected by COVID-19 in their barangay. How many canned goods will each family
receive?
 What kind of child is Ana?
 Do you think her mother will be happy to see Ana helping her?
 If you were Ana, will you also help your mother, friends,
and teachers? Why?
 How will you solve this problem?

To solve this problem,

we have to divide 200 by 10.

In dividing 3- to 4-digit numbers by 10, 100, and 1 000

without remainder, we can use the following technique:

While in dividing 3- to 4-digit numbers by 10, 100, and 1000 with remainder, we can
use the following:

6
Solution 1:
Divided by 10 Divided by 100 Divided by 1000

Solution 2:
Divided by 10

Divided by 100

Divided by 1 000

Remember:
 In dividing numbers by 10, the digit in the ONES place forms the
remainder, while the remaining digits form the quotient.
 In dividing numbers by 100, the two digits in the ONES and the
TENS place form the remainder while the remaining digits form the quotient.
 In dividing numbers by 1000, the extreme right three digits form the remainder
and the rest digit/digits form the quotient.

What’s More

A. Fill in the missing number and check your answer.

7
B. Follow the rule to complete the table.

C. Complete the table.

What I Have Learned

To divide 3- to 4-digit number by 1-digit number without or with remainder, the

following are the steps:
 Divide the first partial dividend by the divisor.
 Write the quotient above the hundreds or tens place.
 Multiply the quotient by the divisor.
 Write the product under the hundreds or tens place then subtract.
 Bring down the next digit in the dividend.
 Divide the next partial dividend by the divisor.
 Write the product under tens or ones place and then subtract.
 Continue the process until the last partial dividends.
 Write the remainder, if any, in the quotient.
To divide 3- to 4-digit number by 1-digit number without or with remainder, the
following are the steps:
 Decide where to place the first digit in the quotient.
 Divide the thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones.
 Multiply, subtract, compare, and bring down until all digits are used.
 Write the remainder in the quotient, if any.
To divide 3- to 4-digit numbers by 10, 100, and 1 000 without or with remainder, here
are the steps:
 To divide numbers by 10, 100, or 1000, cancel or remove as many zeros in the
dividend as there are in the divisor, then, divide the remaining numbers.
 In dividing 3- to 4-digit numbers by 10 with remainder, the last digit in the
dividend is the remainder while the remaining digits represents the quotient.
 In dividing 3- to 4-digit numbers by 100 with remainder, the last two digits of
the dividend is the remainder while the remaining digits represents the
quotient.
 In dividing 3- to 4-digit numbers by 1000 with remainder, the last 3 digits of
the dividend is the remainder while the remaining digits represents the
quotient.

Lesson

1 Estimating Quotient
Division is the most difficult operation because it involves all the other three operations.
This lesson aims to provide learners with better understanding of division of whole numbers and
estimating quotient. This helps the learners to apply estimating quotient in real life situations.
Estimating quotient can make division easier and can make the learners quickly determine the
estimated answer. Estimating quotient will also help learners apply their knowledge in rounding
off numbers and in finding compatible numbers and other strategies to make division easier.

What’s New

Learn About Estimating Quotient

Now, that you’ve learned how to round numbers, let’s apply them in learning how to get
the estimated quotient. Let’s start!

The world is facing one of the biggest problems of

all time, the pandemic COVID-19. It has changed the life
of everyone, not only in the Philippines, but all over the
word. Many agencies of the government are working
together in launching charity drives to help Filipino
families that are most affected by this pandemic. If one
agency gathered 9 762 boxes of goods and decided to allot
96 boxes per barangay, about how many barangays
would be the recipients of the charity drive?

To solve the word problem, let us analyze it first by answering the following questions:
 What is 9 762 in the problem?
 How about 96? What are we going to do
 What do you notice about what is asked in the problem? to solve the problem?
 What does the word about mean?

4
In order to solve the given word problem, we need to apply the rules in rounding off numbers.
 What is 9 762 rounded to the nearest hundreds?
 How about 96 rounded to its highest place value?
 Which do you think of the following is easier to divide? Why?
9 762 ÷ 96 10 000 ÷ 90 9 800 ÷ 100

What is It

To solve the problem, we will not get the exact answer because the word about in the
question means that we are going to get the estimated quotient. An estimated answer means that
it is more than or less than the exact answer. To get the estimated quotient we can use
compatible numbers that are easy to divide. Since the divisor is a 2-digit number, we should
round off the divisor to its highest place value and then find the compatible number for the
dividend.
9 762 ÷ 96

9 762 ÷ 100 First, round off the divisor to its highest place value.

9 800 ÷ 100 Next, find a number compatible to the dividend or a number close
to the dividend that can be easily divide by 100.

98 More or less, there are 98 barangays that will received 96 boxes of

goods each.

Let us have more examples. 468 ÷ 9 6 523 ÷ 8 4 327 ÷ 64

450 ÷ 9 6 400 ÷ 8 4 327 ÷ 60
= 50 = 800 4 200 ÷ 60
= 70

Let’s have another word problem.

Robert is working as waiter in a restaurant. He received a transportation allowance of
₱805 pesos for 9 days. About how much is his transportation allowance each day?
 What is ₱805 in the problem?
 How about 9 days?
Solution:
805 ÷ 9
810 ÷ 9
= ₱90 more or less is the allowance that Robert receives each day.

Our educational system is facing magnificent changes due to pandemic. We welcome our
learners to what we call the “New Normal” set up of our educational system where we are going
to use interactive lessons and modules to provide adequate ways in teaching our learners.
During this time of pandemic COVID-19, many private individuals are lending their helping
hands to the poor families in our community. One of the most important things that we use to
fight this pandemic is by wearing a face masks. The Flores family were working hand-in-hand in
making face masks to be donated to poor families in different barangays. If they made 4 500
pieces of face masks to be donated to 90 barangays, how many face masks will each barangay
receive?
Let us analyze the given word problem.
 What is 4 500 in our problem?
 How about 90?

What’s New

Did you know that you can divide without the help of pen and paper? There are some techniques
in doing mental division.
These are:
1. Simplifying or splitting the dividend by breaking into parts that are easy to divide.
2. Dividing by 5, 50, 500….
3. Dividing by 25, 250, 2 500….
4. Dividing by 125.
5. Simplifying the dividend by adding or subtracting a number to make the dividend and
the divisor compatible numbers.
Do you want to learn on how to divide mentally?

7
What is It

Can we solve mentally, how many face masks will each barangay will receive?

4 500 ÷ 90 Since both the dividend and divisor have terminal zeros, you
can apply cancellation, like what is shown on the left. Then
4 500 ÷ 90 take a look at your dividend and divisor, since they are
compatible, we can divide it mentally.
450 ÷ 9

= 50 (face masks for each

barangay) Here are some
techniques in doing
mental division:

1. Simplifying or splitting the dividend by breaking into parts that are easy to
divide.
For example:
4 536 ÷ 9= 4500 + 36
276 ÷ 3 = 270 + 6
= +
4500 ÷ 9 + 36 ÷ 9
270 ÷ 3 + 6÷3
+

500 + 4 = 504
90 + 2 = 92
4 536 ÷ 9 = 504
276 ÷ 3 = 92

2. Dividing by 5, 50, 500… We multiply the 3. Dividing by 25, 250,2500… We multiply the
dividend by 2, then divide by 10, 100, dividend by 4, then divide by 10, 100,
1000… 1000…
For example: For example:
a. 145 ÷ 5 = 145 x 2 = 290 ÷10 = 29 a. 350 ÷ 25 = 350 x 4 =1400 ÷100 = 14
b. 750 ÷ 50 = 750x2=1500÷100 =15 b. 750 ÷ 250 = 750 x 4 =3000÷1000 =3
c. 4 000 ÷ 500 = 4000x2=8000÷1000 = 8 c. 12500 ÷2500 =12500 x 4 =50000 ÷ 10000 = 5

5. Simplifying the dividend by adding or

subtracting a number to make the dividend and
4. Dividing by 125, We multiply the
the divisor compatible numbers.
dividend by 8, then divide by 1000.
For example: For example: Change 354 to 360 by
adding 6 to make it
a. 750 ÷ 125 = 750 x 8 =6000 ÷1000 = 6 354 ÷ 6
compatible with divisor.
b. 1000 ÷125 =1000 x 8 =8 000 ÷ 1000 = 8
354 + 6 = 360
Then we subtract 1
60-1 = 59 because

(6 ÷ 6 = 1) from 60, since

we added 6 to 354.

8
What’s More

A. Find the quotient using splitting the dividend technique.

1. 280 ÷ 20 = ( + ) ÷ 20 2. 735 ÷ 7 = ( + )÷7

Lesson Solving Routine and Non-Routine
Problems Involving
1 Division of 3- to 4-Digit Numbers
by 1- to 2-Digit Numbers

One thing to consider in this lesson, students will solve math word problems
involving division of 3- to 4-digit numbers by 1- to 2-digit numbers including money
using appropriate problem solving strategies and tools. Those problems include routine
and non-routine.

What’s In

Let us review first division of 3- to 4-digit numbers by 1- to 2-digit numbers.

Find the quotient of the following:

1. 3 458 ÷ 8 = ______
2. 692 ÷ 12 = ______
3. 5 784 ÷ 7 = ______
4. 8 569 ÷ 16 = ______
5. 4 853 ÷ 32 = ______

What’s New

Solving Routine and Non-Routine Problems Involving Division/Solving Multi-Step

Problems Involving Division and Any of Other Operations

Now, let us read this problem.

Butch sold old photo papers for ₱35.00 and used bottles for ₱79.00.
With that money, he bought notebooks at ₱12.00 each. How many
notebooks were he able to buy? How much money was left with him?

Do you have any idea on

how to solve this problem?
Let’s figure it out. Use the
following steps:

5
What is It

Let us analyze the problem.

1. What is asked in the problem?

 The number of notebooks Butch were able to buy out of his money and the
money left with him

2. What are the given data in the problem?

 The given are: cost of photo papers - ₱ 35.00
cost of bottles - ₱ 79.00
cost of one notebook - ₱ 12.00

What is the hidden question?

The hidden question is the total money earned from the old photo papers and
used bottles.

3. What is the equation for the problem?

The equation will be: ( ₱ 35.00 + ₱ 79.00 ) ÷ ₱ 12.00 = n
4. What is the final answer?
Here’s the solution and the answer.
( ₱ 35.00 + ₱ 79.00 ) ÷ ₱ 12.00 = n
₱ 114.00 ÷ 12 = n
9 r. 6 = n

Butch would be able to buy 9 notebooks and he would have ₱ 6.00 left with
him

5. How will you check if your answer is correct?

Multiply 9 by ₱12.00. Then subtract the product from ₱ 114.00 to get ₱ 6.00.
Let’s try. ₱ 12.00 x 9 = ₱ 108.00; ₱ 114.00 – ₱ 108.00 = ₱ 6.00

Let us have another problem.

Darren bought 4 t-shirts and 2 pairs of pants for ₱ 3,000. If a t-shirt

costs ₱300 each, find the cost of each pair of pants.

₱ 3 000

6
Can you solve this problem?
• Understand
How many shirts and pair of pants were bought?
How much did 4 t-shirts and 2 pair of pants cost?
a. What is asked? Find the cost of each pair of pants.
b. What are the given? 4 t-shirts and 2 pair of pants for ₱ 3 000
T-shirt costs ₱ 300 each
Can you find the answer at once? What do you need to do?
Look the hidden question: The total cost of 4 t-shirts
• Plan
c. What operation/s to be used?
Multiplication (Find the total cost of 4 t-shirts)
Subtraction (Subtract the total cost of 4 t-shirts from total amount spent)
Division (Divide the remaining amount by 2 to get the cost of each pair of pants)
Write the number sentence: [₱ 3 000 - (4 x ₱ 300)] ÷ 2 = n
• Solve:
Step1: Find the total cost of 4 t-shirts 4 x ₱ 300 = ₱ 1 200
Step 2: Subtract the total cost of 4 t-shirts ₱ 3 000 – ₱ 1 200 = ₱ 1 800
from the amount spent
Step 3: Divide the remaining amount by 2 ₱ 1 800 ÷ 2 = ₱ 900
to get the cost of each pair of pants
• Check and Look back So, each pair of pants costs ₱ 900
