Interpreting the experimental Data:
How to Approach
1. Plot your experimental data as scattered point (not as
connecting line). For example as below.

Interpreting the experimental Data: How to
Approach
• Just hold your breadth for a while and think what should be the expected
trend.
• Don’t jump to conclusion.
• Look for the expected trend in text book, literature or technical websites.
• Compare your results with the trend you found in literature.
• If it is not matching with the literature trend at all, go back to your
calculation and recheck the way you processed the data..
• Look for the suitable trend line (mathematical model/correlations)
available in the literature

Fitting the mathematical model using nonlinear
regression (least square technique)
• For example. One of the mathematical model for the Total head of the
pump with flow rate is H=a‐bQ2
• Fit the above equation using least square technique as explained in
Tutorial. Example attached. curve fitting.xlsx.
• Plot Model and experimental results together to show the quality of fit.

Fitting the mathematical model using nonlinear regression
(least square technique):Empirical modeling
• One of the famous equation in Chemical engineering is highly non‐linear…
what is that??
• Antoine Equation (How to get the model coefficients)

Interpreting the experimental Data: How to
Approach
• Discuss the plot referring to over all quality of experimental data as
compared to the theoretical model/correlation.
• Quantify the deviations by doing statistical analysis
o % deviation=(experimental value –theoretical value)/theoretical value*100.
o Mention the maximum deviation you are having in your result.
o AAD (average absolute deviation)
AAD give the idea of over all quality of data.

Interpreting the experimental Data: How to
Approach
• Justify the trend with physical principle.
o Refer to the related theory you learned before.
o Come up with scientific reasons involved and explain the trends
clearly.
o You are most welcome to share your thought with instructor. Your
thought could be fined tuned and you will be guided towards better
understanding of physical phenomenon happening in the experiments.
