Amazon acquired Whole Foods to expand into the consumer retail business and gain a physical store presence for groceries. However, there are hurdles to realizing the full benefits or synergy potential from the acquisition. The businesses have different models and cultures that will be challenging to integrate, with Amazon focusing on low prices and Whole Foods operating in the premium segment. 3. What are some of the hurdles Amazon has to overcome to realize this synergy?

 Differences in Business models:


 Amazon is a low-price leader operating with a very thin margin while Whole
Foods operate in premium segment with a higher margin. Forcing Amazon’s
model of cost cutting and improving efficiency without altering the cost
structure of Whole Foods affects the Organization Synergy
 Differences in Culture:
 Amazon’s relationship with its employees is a bit strained while Whole Foods
is known for its work culture where employees are taken good care of
 Without altering the HR policies, the combined entity would face challenges
in the Cultural Synergy and that would hamper the productivity and the
morale of the employees
 Market Position:
 Even after the acquisition of the Whole Foods, the combined organization
would trail behind most of the competitors at 5th position
 They need to set up a robust supply chain to operate in an industry with low
margin, so this would be a challenge in achieving Revenue Synergy
