Assignment 1 Solution PDF

1) This document outlines an assignment for a structural dynamics course. It includes 9 questions about fundamental structural dynamics concepts like single degree of freedom systems, damping ratios, and Fourier transforms. 2) The first question involves calculating the time, velocity, and acceleration of a block on a spring that is struck by a hammer. 3) Other questions address determining total displacement of a mass in an SDF system subjected to support motion, modeling roadway deflection, damping ratios, instrument damping, and Fourier series and transform expansions.

CVG4142 – Structural dynamics

ASSIGNMENT# 1

DUE DATE: 14 FEBRUARY 2020–Submission: assignment box at mezzanine of CBY.

1) A 1.4-kg block is supported as shown by a spring of constant k= 400 N/m which can
act in tension or compression. The block is in its equilibrium position when it is struck
from below by a hammer which imparts to the block an upward velocity of 2.5 m/s.
Determine (a) the time required for the block to move 60 mm upward, (b) the
corresponding velocity and acceleration of the block.

Q.7
What is the ratio of successive amplitudes of vibration if the viscous damping ratio is
known to be ζ = 0.01, (b) ζ = 0.05, or (c) ζ = 0.25? Use the high damping system
assumption.

much higher than its own natural frequency, what would be the optimum instrument damping for maximum
accuracy? Use:
