Lesson 1 Modern Art

BEGIN

The rapid growth of industry and the progress of technology propelled artists to
represent the world in new and innovative ways. The result was an art that took on
new colors, alternative forms, emotional expressions, and experiments in abstraction.

In all of human history, art has mirrored life in the community, society, and the
world in all its colors, lines, shapes, and forms. The same has been true in the last
two centuries, with world events and global trends being reflected in the art
movements.

The decades from 1900 to the present have seen the human race living in an
ever-shrinking planet. The 20th century saw a boom in the interchange of ideas,
beliefs, values, and lifestyles that continues to bring the citizens of the world closer
together.

YOUR TARGETS

At the end of this module, you should be able to:

 analyze art elements and principles in the production of work following the
style of a western and classical art;

IMPRESSIONISM
A Break from Past Painting Traditions

Impressionism was an art

movement that emerged in the second
half of the 19th century among a group
of Paris-based artists. The duration of
impressionist movement it was quite
short, less than 20 years from 1872 to
the mid-1880. Nevertheless, it had a
tremendous impact and influence on Impression,
Sunrise

the painting styles that followed, such https://www.artble.com/artists/claude_monet/paintings/impression_sunrise

as neo-impressionism, fauvism, and

cubism- even the artistic styles and movement of today. The name impressionism
was coined from the title of art a work by French painter Claude Monet , Impression,
soleil levant (Impression, Sunrise).

The term precisely captured what this group of artists sought to represent
their works: the viewer‘s momentary ―impression‖ of an image. It was not intended to
be clear or precise, but more like a feeting fragment of reality caught on canvas,
sometimes in mid-motion, at other times awkwardly positioned-just as it would be in
real life.

Distinct Characteristic
Color and Light
 Short broken strokes
 Puse unmixed colors side by side
 Freely brushed color (convey visual effect)
Everyday Subjects
 Scenes of life
 Household objects
 Landscapes and Seascapes
 Houses, Cafes, Buildings
Painting Outdoors

Previously, still life, portraits, and landscapes were painted inside the
studio. the impressionists found that they could best capture the ever-changing
effects of light on color by painting outdoors in natural light.
Open Composition

Impressionist painting also moved away from the formal, structured

approach to placing and positioning their subjects.

Influence of Photography

Photography was in its early stages at this time as well. As it gained

popularity, photography inspired impressionist to capture fleeting moments of
action, whether in landscapes or in day-to-day lives of people. But whereas
camera snapshots provided objective, true-to-life images the painters were able
to offer a subjective view of their subjects, expressing their personal
perceptions rather than creating exact representations. They also had the
advantage of manipulating color, which photography at that time still lacked.

POST-IMPRESSIONISM
Works of Paul Cézanne and Vincent Van Gogh

After the brief yet highly influential period of impressionism, an outgrowth

movement known as post-impressionism emerged. The European artists who were
at the forefront of this movement continued using the basic qualities of impressionists
before them--- the vivid colors, heavy brush strokes, and true-to-life subjects.
However, they expanded and experimented with these in bold new ways, like using
geometric approach, fragmenting objects and distorting people‘s faces and body parts,
and applying colors that were not necessarily realistic or natural.
Two of the foremost post-impressionist were Paul Cézanne and Vincent Van
Gogh.

Paul Cézanne
1839-1906

A French artist and post-impressionist painter.

His work exemplified the transition from late 19th-

century impressionism to a new and radically different
world of art in the 20th century-paving the way for the next
revolutionary art movement known as expressionism.

Fernando Amorsolo
(1892-1972)

Labelled the country‘s first National Artist in 1972 by

then President Marcos, Fernando Amorsolo is often known
as the ‗Grand Old Man of Philippine Art‘. The Spanish-
trained realist developed a backlighting technique, where his
colorful depictions of local people reflect the radiance of the
Philippine sun. The figures and illuminated landscapes
magically glow on the canvas. Despite his deteriorating
health and failing eyesight, he remained prolific until the end,
producing up to 10 paintings a month until his death at the
age of 80. Amorsolo‘s creativity defines the nation‘s culture
and heritage to this day.

She was an important and influential
Philippine artist who helped to encourage and
support the development of Modern Art and Neo-
Realist painting in her country. Born in Manila in
1914, she went on to study at the University of the
Philippines School of Fine Arts with Fabian de la
Rosa and acclaimed Filipino painter Fernando
Amorsolo. She later traveled to the United States

Along with other celebrated Filipino

artists of the Modern Art era, including
Vicente Manansala and Fernando Zobel, she
and her peers broke away in the 1950's from
the constraints of the previous more
conservative artistic trends. Her paintings
evolved and headed more towards
Modernism as she experimented with cubist
distortion and a more stylized look. She was
one of the ―Thirteen Moderns‖, a group of
Filipino modernist artists. Throughout her life,
her works frequently celebrated and were
inspired by strong, beautiful Philippine
women working at everyday tasks such as
harvesting crops, washing clothes, and https://www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/anita-magsaysay-ho-philippines-1914-2012-

cooking meals for their families. The artist Tomato Pickers
traveled extensively with her husband, Anita Magsaysay-Ho
Robert Ho, moved over 40 times to a variety oil on canvas
of countries, and raised five children.

Magsaysay-Ho's artistic career was long and successful and her works earned
many awards during her lifetime, including second Prize in the 1950 Manila Grand
Opera House Exhibition for her painting titled ―Five Senses‖. She also was awarded
1st prize three times by The Philippine Art Association, in 1952 for "The Cooks", in
1959 for ―Mending the Nets‖, and in 1960 for ―Two Women‖. In 1999 one of her
paintings sold for a record high price at the time for a living Filipino artist. She lived to
the age of 97 and died in her birthplace, the city of Manila. Her paintings can be found
in the collections of the Ateneo Art Gallery in Manila, The Lopez Memorial Museum
and Library in Pasig, The Metropolitan Museum of Manila, and The Yuchengco
Museum in Makati City.

Jose Mari Picornell

Impressionist Jose Mari Picornell is
obsessed with the scenes he thinks will soon
vanish in the areas he sees in the city as he
pedals around on his trusty bike. He captures
these in oil on canvas. The latest of these
paintings are on view in Qube Gallery‘s
―Vecindad,‖ the artist‘s fourth solo exhibit.

Jose Mari had no formal

training in painting. He said he
used to do watercolor paintings
when he was young. When
architect Pio Bonilla saw his
works, he told Jose Mari that he
was a natural-born painter and
taught him how to paint with
oils. Since then, he has been

GLOSSARY

Impressionism - is a 19th-century art movement characterized by relatively small,

thin, yet visible brush strokes, open composition, emphasis on accurate
depiction of light in its changing qualities (often accentuating the effects of
the passage of time), ordinary subject matter, inclusion of movement as a
crucial element of human perception and experience, and unusual visual
angles. Impressionism originated with a group of Paris-based artists whose
independent exhibitions brought them to prominence during the 1870s and
1880s.

Post-Impressionism - is an art movement that developed in the 1890s. It is

characterized by a subjective approach to painting, as artists opted to
evoke emotion rather than realism in their work. While their styles,
therefore, wildly varied, paintings completed in the Post-Impressionist
manner share some similar qualities. These include symbolic motifs,
unnatural color, and painterly brushstrokes.
