This document provides a self-learning home task on graphing linear inequalities in two variables for grade 8 mathematics students. It contains readings and examples to explain the steps to graph linear inequalities, which are: 1) rewriting the inequality in slope-intercept form, 2) graphing the line as the boundary, 3) using a broken or solid line, 4) determining the solution region by testing a point, and 5) graphing both inequalities on the same axes. The task then provides exercises for students to practice graphing inequalities and identifying graphs. It concludes with an enrichment activity matching inequalities to their graphs. The overall document guides students through fully understanding and applying the process of graphing linear inequalities in

A. Readings/Discussions

One of the ways to solve problems is to visualize (graph) and we can also use graphing to check
if the answer is correct especially when it involves two variables. But how can we be sure that the graph
is correct? Read and understand the following steps in graphing a system of linear inequalities in two
variables. The steps are the following:
1. Rewrite it to slope intercept form (y=mx + b) and express both inequalities as equalities.
2. Graph the lines of these equations which will serve as the border lines of the resulting half
planes which satisfy the given inequalities.
3. Use a broken line (-----) if the inequality used is > or <, or use a solid line ( ) if the inequality
is ≥ or ≤.
4. Determine which of the two half planes is the solution region.
Choose any point on one side of the border line as the test point.
{ Preferably (0,0) }
Substitute the coordinates of the point to the inequality.
If the resulting statement is true, then the point is in solution region, thus, shade the region.
If the resulting statement is false, then the point is not in the solution region. Thus, shade
the other side of the border line.
5. Remember that both inequalities should be graphed on one coordinate axes.

The graph of a linear inequality in two

variables is the set of all points in the rectangular
coordinate system whose ordered pairs satisfy the
inequality. When a line is graphed in the
coordinate plane, it separates the plane into two
regions called half-planes. The line that separates
the plane is called the plane divider.

Example: Graph 2x -y > 1.

Solution: 2x -y > 1
Following the steps
1. Rewrite it to slope intercept form (y=mx + b) and express both inequalities as equalities.
2x – y > 1
2x +(-2x) -y > 1 -2x add both sides by (-2x)
𝟎−𝒚 𝟏−𝟐𝒙
> divide both sides by (-1)
−𝟏 −𝟏
y < 2x-1 the > sign becomes < sign because with divide it by negative sign.

Therefore 2x – y> 1 is y < 2x-1 in slope intercept form, hence will use y=2x – 1
2. Graph the lines of these equations which will serve as the border lines of the resulting half planes
which satisfy the given inequalities.

This the graph of y=2x-1, y-axis

this also our plane divisor.

x-axis

3. Use a broken line (-----) if the inequality used is > or <, or use a solid line ( ) if the inequality
is ≥ or ≤.
y-axis
The plane divisor is a
broken line because
x-axis the inequality uses <
sign.

4. Determine which of the two half planes is the solution region.

Choose any point on one side of the border line as the testing point.
Example: (0,0)
Substitute the coordinates of the point to the inequality.
Y < 2x-1
0 < 2(0) -1
0<0–1
0 < -1, FALSE, thus the graph is below the plain divisor.

If the resulting statement is true, then the point is in solution region, thus, shade the region.
If the resulting statement is false, then the point is not in the solution region. Thus, shade
the other side of the border line.
y-axis
(2,1)
The shaded portion of
the coordinate axes is
the graph of 2x – y > 1
x-axis

Remember that both inequalities should be graphed on one coordinate axes.

Note: After rewriting the inequality to slope intercept form, if the linear inequality uses greater than (>) or
greater than or equal to (≥) the graph covers above the line of the linear equation (plane divisor). When
the linear inequality uses less than (<) or less than or equal to (≤) the graph covers the left side or below
the line of the linear equation.
