The major that I choose now is Informatics Engineering. Informatics engineering is a field of
science that studies how to use computer technology optimally to deal with the problem of
transforming or processing data with logical processes. In the Department of Informatics
Engineering, you learn various principles related to computer science, from the process of
designing, developing, testing, to evaluating software operating systems. During college you
will learn a lot and learn about computing, and are also equipped with software design skills.
The reason I chose informatics engineering major is that the rapid development of
technology has made the job prospects of Informatics Engineering graduates wider and the
types of work diverse. The information technology sector is generally the first choice in the
list of dream careers for Informatics Engineering graduates. Armed with the knowledge and
skills acquired during their time in college, graduates of Informatics Engineering can have a
selling point to be proud of. Because Informatics Engineering graduates are needed to
design and build software and develop new effective and efficient ways to deal with various
computing problems.
Things learned in the department of informatics engineering
Every day you will learn algorithms, coding, programming, network systems, cryptography,
and others. If you decide to major in Informatics Engineering, you will have a lot to do with
programming, software development, and computer network technology. Basically, it will
be a translator of an idea that must be poured in digital form using a certain programming
language.
In the process, many will make flowcharts or flowcharts of how a system can run according
to its functions and logic. Of course, thoroughness and tenacity are the most basic
characteristics that must be possessed.
Manpower from the department of informatics engineering is needed in this era of
globalization which is full of technology.
Computer science graduates are expected to become experts in operating systems,
applications, and computers so that they can ensure IT and operating systems work properly
according to the directions that have been inputted.
IT experts are needed by every company that relies on technology to operate, whether
public, private, or multinational companies in various industrial sectors.
The general reasons many people choose to major in computer science, including myself,
are:
1. Industry Needs Continue to Increase
This is the most important. In this digital era, what doesn't rely on apps and the
internet? Everyone is of course already so close and maybe depends on the device,
whether it's a cell phone, tablet computer, or laptop. Even in each of these devices,
of course there are applications that are always a necessity for carrying out activities,
In the future, the need for this will continue to increase. Even in a professional
business starting from a medium scale, the IT field is needed and its presence is very
crucial. Even for large-scale companies, the IT team is one of the main backbones
that supports the success of the business considering that now all data has been
transformed into digital form.
2. Very High Independent Work Opportunity
Still regarding future career opportunities, Informatics Engineering graduates have
enormous advantages. In the context of work in accordance with the field of study,
not all college graduates have the opportunity to work independently or not tied to a
particular company. At least, you can become an IT consultant. Starting from a small
business with a CV business entity, you and your trusted partner can become
company consultants to the government, you know. In addition, you can also set up
a software house to startup though. In fact, you can also become one of the types of
workers that are currently booming, especially abroad, namely being a digital
nomad.
3. Interest in the world of informatics
especially the millennial generation, who since childhood have been quite
accustomed to gadgets, it is not surprising that they then have an interest in the
world of informatics. I like to tinker with programs by self-taught, either through
books, articles, videos, and others. In fact, not infrequently, Informatics Engineering
enthusiasts are based on an interest in the world of games that are presented in the
form of applications. The interest in playing is then stimulated to think about how to
create a game, no longer as a user.
Many new types of jobs are created due to the presence of IT systems, including:
1. Programmer, is an expert in programming systems or developing applications in
various industrial fields.
2. Web engineer/web administrator, expert in developing and maintaining the website
of an organization or company.
3. Software engineer, is an expert in the development and operation of software. These
experts are needed in all lines of industry.
4. Computer network, is an expert who designs, manages, and maintains IT networks
within the company.
5. Database engineer/database administrator, expert in designing, managing, and
maintaining company-owned databases.
6. Game Developer, is an informatics expert who develops games as a medium of
education and entertainment.
7. IT consultant, is a person who plays a role in planning and evaluating IT in an
organization or company.
Student Characters Suitable for Informatics Engineering
Choosing a college major is the right of everyone. But actually, college is not just a matter of
one's academic ability. Each field of study has a certain character that should be adapted to
the character of each person. This adjustment will also have an influence on students to
adapt so that they are able to develop their abilities optimally during the study period.
So, what are the appropriate characters for the field of Informatics Engineering study?
• Have a strong understanding of logic.
• Thorough and careful.
• Diligent and able to work continuously in the long term.
• Have a high detail orientation.
• Accustomed to think systematically and structured.
But don't worry if you don't have all of that but still want to major in informatics engineering
because, once you've entered the informatics engineering major, you will gradually get used
to the things mentioned above.
Things You Should Consider When Taking Informatics Engineering Major
1. Customize with Interests and Talents
The first thing to consider when majoring in Informatics Engineering is whether the
Informatics Engineering major suits your interests and talents. These interests and
talents that you have are very important in helping to adapt when you start college.
At least, if the Informatics Engineering major fits your interests and talents. Then the
possibility for you to feel depressed in the middle of the road becomes small. So
there are no more wrong majors for you. It does not mean that you have to be good
at all the subjects given. It's just that you have to know that most of the existing
courses are in accordance with yourself. Even so, it's still natural, if it turns out that
there are some courses that you can't or master because the more you learn what
you can't, the more you can learn later, so there's no need to worry.
2. What is the Goal
The next consideration that is quite important before deciding to major in
Informatics Engineering is to reaffirm the purpose. What is the basis for choosing an
Informatics Engineering major compared to other majors?
It would be better, if from the beginning to find out about how the prospects work,
what to study, and what opportunities you will get after graduation. Thus, you can
determine what goals you want to achieve after graduation and have a sense of
responsibility to finish college and determine your future career.
3. Ready to Stay Up to date on Technological Developments
Whatever programming language is learned, it will always be updated, and with each
update sometimes the syntax or program code changes as well. Therefore, you must
stay up to date so you don't get left behind. So there is no need to start learning
many more things to catch up in following developments.
Being sensitive to technological developments is not carried out as long as you are
still a student, when you graduate, you must also be ready to keep up with existing
technological developments.
4. Are you ready to wrestle with logic and math?
Students majoring in Informatics Engineering will spend a lot of time exploring
programming, because the Informatics Engineering curriculum will focus more on
the software side. Programming itself is an embodiment of an algorithm consisting of
mathematics and logic. Basically Informatics Engineering is a derivative of the field of
Computer Mathematics. To be a programmer or developer, you don't have to be
good at math. However, if you have math skills then it will be a good point for you.
Even if you don't like math courses, inevitably in the Informatics Engineering major,
you will definitely meet mathematics.
5. Can You Survive?
Taking a major in Informatics Engineering is the right of every prospective student.
However, you must know that each college major has a certain character that should
be adapted to the character of each individual. This character can influence students
to adapt more quickly to the environment they choose, so they will be more optimal
during their studies.
There is no benchmark that can determine with certainty whether we are suitable to
enter the Informatics Engineering major or not. Everything really depends on
yourself, after all, only you know what your interests, talents, potential, passion and
aspirations are.
