Unit 2 GE-US

The document provides a pretest to assess knowledge on topics related to human biology, sexuality, and physical health. It then outlines learning activities focused on researching and analyzing biological and social factors related to the self. The activities evaluate natural and artificial family planning methods and discuss proper social etiquette to maintain a good physical image.

Activity No. 1 – Research Analysis on Biological and Social Factors of Self

Learning Activities

Research a study on the biological and social factors of the self (there are many pieces of research
related to this topic on the internet). Give a copy of the abstract of the research and the source/link.
Analyze the research study by showing your appreciation and criticism of the work. Make your analysis
research-based (meaning do not simply give your assumptions without basis) or you may refer your
assumptions on the reading materials of this module. You may follow the outline below to show your
analysis.

Title of the Research: Biological and Social Predictors of Long-term Geriatric Depression outcome

Authors: David C. Steffens, Carl F. Pieper, Hayden B. Bosworth, James R. Macfall, James M. Provenzale,
Martha E. Payne, Bernard J. Carroll, Linda K. George, and K. Ranga R. Krishnan

1. Research Problems

Determine if Biological and social factors are related to depression

2. Methods Used
 Structures Interview
 Clinical Diagnosis (for depression diagnostics)
 Data Review
 Mixed model data analysis
3. Findings
Montgomery Asberg Depression Rating Scale scores decrease steadily over time. In a final HLM
model, in which time since entry, a baseline time indicator, age, gender, education and Mini-
mental State Examination score were controlled, subjective social support, instrumental ADL
impairment, subcortical gray matter severity, and the interactions of time with social network
and with subcortical gray matter lesions remained significantly associated with MADRS score.
(Stephen, D. et Al,. 2005)
4. Conclusions

Both social and biological factors at baseline are associated with longitudinal depression severity
in geriatric depression.

5. Appreciation to the research work

I really appreciate that this research work is not theory dependent, instead, the researchers
created a study wherein there are actual scientific real biological mediators such as the addition
of subcortical gray matter as a variable if the depressive parts of their brain are degrading or
not. Further, I also appreciate that the researchers produced a study with strong methods,
acquiring clinical help from people that are experts in neurology, like the usage of the MADRS
and the clinical diagnosis to assure if the participants/respondents are depressed clinically.

6. Criticism to the study

The scope of the study is too narrow. It would be much interesting if they include younger ones/
respondents to create a more generative results and conclusion.

image. Make the layout of your photos into a beautiful story. Remember that collage making is an art
piece, be creative.

B. Student Blog Project

Update the blog that you made in Unit 1. This time make a blog on proper attitude in asocial situation –
what we call etiquette. This attitude creates a good image and makes us feel good about ourselves. You
have read in the last part of this unit, the different ways of maintaining a good image through social
etiquettes. You may use points listed here or research new and additional ways on the internet. You may
post pictures and text, just make sure these are all clear and readable. Again, use your creativity in doing

PERSONAL INSIGHT

This unit was lengthy, but I really enjoyed the topics. I walked in the memory lane in the biological
section of this unit. I have learned all about the biological, physical, and sexual self of an individual. I
have also learned how each facet are important and what are their main concepts and functions. I have
also learned how they are related to each other and their interdisciplinary features, along with other
aspects of the humankind such as social and cultural aspects. In total, this unit is a bit draining to take in,
but the gain or the learning is quite satisfying.
