Setting Up PowerFlex 70 Drive With Encoder As Speed Reference

This document provides instructions for setting up a PowerFlex 70 drive to use an encoder as the speed reference for an existing machine. Key steps include: - Setting parameter P90 to "Encoder" - Configuring parameter P412 for the encoder type - Setting parameter P413 to the encoder's pulses per revolution - Setting parameter P190 to "Bipolar" if needed for a quadrature encoder - Ordering an encoder feedback option board if the drive does not have one installed already - Verifying encoder polarity is correct to avoid speed reference differences

Question
My drive is required to follow the speed of an existing machine to a good degree of accuracy. Can I use an
encoder as its speed reference?

Environment
Bulletin 20A PowerFlex 70 drive

Answer
Yes you can configure a PowerFlex 70 drive with an Encoder as a Speed Reference.

In addition to the normal setup parameters (accel / decel rates, minimum / maximum speed), set the following
parameters:

Parameter P90 [Speed Ref A Sel] = Encoder

Parameter P412 [Motor Feedback Type] = set to specifications of encoder

Parameter P413 [Encoder PPR] = set to specifications of encoder

Parameter P190 [Direction Mode] = Bipolar if required, but this will only work with a quadrature encoder

If your drive is an Enhanced Control drive and does not have the encoder card order the following part:

Encoder Feedback Option Board, 5/12 VDC, Incremental. 20A-ENC-1

Verify that the drive encoder polarity is correct or you may cause speed reference differences based on
commanded and actual speed.
