Write an account of the ways in which the Qur’an
was revealed to the Prophet between the years 610
and 632. [10]
The Holy Quran is a Divine book revealed on holy
prophet for the guidance of all mankind, the book is
completed in 23 years (610AD-632AD), it has 114
surahs in total which are revealed from time to time
based on the events which were taking place in
prophet's daily life. There were different ways in
which the verses were revealed to the Prophet,
sometimes the Angel Jibreel(as) brought the
revelations and sometimes they were revealed like
the ringing of a bell. Very often, hazrat jibreel(as)
came in a form of a human while another mode of
revealation were true dreams (Rooya -al -sidiqa).
They were not within his control (sura Al-Qiyama)
and he had no idea when they were coming.
At the time of the revealation the holy prophet was 40
years old ,when Jibreel(as) brought first five verses of
surah alaq in cave of hira, then there was a pause in
revealations (fitrat-ul-wahi) for a while , after it ended ,
soon he started receiving more revealations. For the first
three years, he preached those who were close to him.
Hazrat Khadija (R.A), ten blessed companions and some
other companions became muslims during this time.
After these years , Allah commanded him to preach
openly. The pagans of makkah opposed him. This
persecution and opposition continued for ten years . In
622 the holy prophet migrated to madina.
The surahs revealed in Makka are called makki surahs ,
these are short , they emphasize on Tawhid ,not
worshipping false gods , life after death and following
the righteous path. The language of these surahs are
impressive , powerful and a masterpeice of arabic
language .They also tell the stories of nations which are
destroyed because their disobedience.
In 622, the Prophet (saw) migrated to Madina. He
immediately established an Islamic state there. His had
to deal with the two Muslim tribes of Madina, the Aus
and the Khazraj. Jews were also living in Madina.
Hypocrites were the people who accepted Islam
apparently but in reality, they were the enemies of
Islam. The Surahs revealed in Madina are long, they
emphasize on the social laws of Islam , also talked about
worships like prayers. They also teach how to deal with
the Jews and the hypocrites. They also gave instructions
on laws on wars.
The time of revelation used to be a tough time for the
Prophet (sw). The toughest revelations were the ones
with the ringing of bells. Aisha (ra) narrates that even in
winters, the Prophet (sw) used to sweat while receiving
this type of revelation. She also says that if the
revelation would come when he was travelling, his
camel could not move until Jibreel (as) would go back. .
However, the revelations were a time satisfaction for
him. They were not like fits or any other sick condition.
