This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by

educators both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or

facilitator in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum

while overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and

independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also

aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into

consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the

body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this

module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to

manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist

the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

1
For the learner:

Welcome to the General Mathematics – Grade 11 Alternative Delivery Mode

(ADM) Module on Introduction to Logarithmic Function!

Logarithmic function is the other approach of dealing with exponents.

Logarithms and exponents basically help us to easily get the idea of very large value
of a certain number. That is why, unconsciously, we are using them in our everyday
lives specifically in measurements and data statistics. Hopefully, we can provide you
a clearer idea of how logarithms are vital for all of us.

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning resource while being an active
learner.

This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

What I Need to Know This will give you an idea of the skills or
competencies you are expected to learn in the
module.

What I Know This part includes an activity that aims to

check what you already know about the
lesson to take. If you get all the answers
correct (100%), you may decide to skip this
module.

What I Need to Know

Base and exponent are two common terminologies that we often encounter in

algebra. These terms are the very vital parts of logarithms. What are logarithms all

about? In simplest idea, it refers to the number of times a number must be multiplied

to come up with another number.

Today’s Lesson will enable you to:

1. represent real-life situations using logarithmic functions;

(M11GM-Ih-1)

2. distinguish logarithmic function, logarithmic equation, and

logarithmic inequality. (M11GM-Ih-2)

4
What I Know

A. YES or NO. Write Yes if the statement is correct and NO if not.

1. ____ One thousand is also equal to 10 .
2. ____ The power of 12 is commonly known as trillion.
3. ____ Logarithmic function has nothing to do with powers of 10.
4. ____ Richter Scales and Decibels make use of logarithms.
5. ____ Logarithms are used to measure the chemical property of
substance in terms of its pH value.

B. Which is which? Encircle LF for Logarithmic Function, LE for

Logarithmic Equation and LI for Logarithmic Inequality.

1) LF LE LI 6) LF LE LI

𝒍𝒐𝒈𝟐 (𝒙 + 𝟏) = 𝒍𝒐𝒈𝟐 (𝟑 − 𝒙) + 𝟓 𝒈(𝒙) = 𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒙 𝟐

2) LF LE LI 7) LF LE LI

Lesson

1 Logarithmic Functions

In mathematics, there are lots of opposites. The opposite of addition is

subtraction while the counterpart of multiplication is division. Logarithms are the
inverses of exponents.

Functions, Equations and Inequalities are three different things in

mathematics. When combined with logarithms, what concept do you think will be
made up? Let’s figure it out in our today’s lesson.

What’s In

Write ONE WORD that corresponds to the following terms:

6
Notes to the Teacher
This module aims to help learners have a clear idea on
logarithmic functions, equations and inequality. The different
activities were provided to help learners master the basic concepts
for logarithmic functions

What’s New
Let us sing this song together.

7
What is It
 Who is the proponent of
Logarithm?
Answer: __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __
 This Scottish mathematician
invented Logarithm in the 17th
century as a tool for calculation.
 It came from two Greek Word
o __ __ __ __ __ which means
Ratio, and
o __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __
meaning Numbers
 What is LOGARITHM?
o Logarithm is a tool which
shows how many times you
have to multiply a certain
number.

Let us observe what makes Logarithmic function different from logarithmic

equation and logarithmic inequality. Be guided with the following concepts.

8
Consider the following examples:

1. 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝒍𝒐𝒈𝟓 𝟓𝒙 − 𝟐  is Logarithmic Function

2. 𝒍𝒐𝒈𝟐 (𝒙 + 𝟏) = 𝒍𝒐𝒈𝟐 (𝟑 − 𝒙) + 𝟓  is Logarithmic Equation

3. −𝟑 ≥ 𝒍𝒐𝒈𝟓 𝟑𝒙𝟐 + 𝟏  is a Logarithmic Inequality

Activity 1. Fill in the Blanks

1. 𝒍𝒐𝒈𝟐 (𝒙 − 𝟑) = 𝒍𝒐𝒈𝟐 (𝒙 + 𝟏) Logarithmic ______________

2. 𝒍𝒐𝒈𝟕 (𝟐𝒙 + 𝟑) ≤ 𝒍𝒐𝒈𝟕 𝒙𝟐 − 𝟓 Logarithmic ______________
3. 𝒈(𝒙) = 𝒍𝒐𝒈𝟕 𝒙𝟐 − 𝟓 − 𝟏 Logarithmic ______________
4. 𝑯(𝒙) = 𝒍𝒐𝒈𝑿 𝟐 Logarithmic ______________
5. 𝟖𝟏 ≥ 𝒍𝒐𝒈𝟑 (𝑿 − 𝟏) Logarithmic ______________

What’s More

Activity 2. Match the logarithms by drawing a line to connect each other.

9
Activity 3. Classify the logarithms using the table.

𝑙𝑜𝑔 (3 − 𝑥) = 𝑙𝑜𝑔 2𝑥 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑙𝑜𝑔 2𝑥

𝑙𝑜𝑔 (𝑥 − 7) > 3 3 𝑙𝑜𝑔 (4𝑥 − 3) ≤ 7.5
𝑙𝑜𝑔 (3𝑥 + 4) = 𝑙𝑜𝑔 2𝑥 − 𝑏 2 𝑙𝑜𝑔 (5𝑥 − 2) = 𝑙𝑜𝑔 2
𝑙𝑜𝑔 3 = 𝑦 ℎ(𝑥) = 𝑙𝑜𝑔 𝑥
𝑙𝑜𝑔 (𝑥 + 8) < 𝑙𝑜𝑔 2𝑥 − 1 𝑙𝑜𝑔 (𝑥 + 1) ≠ 𝑙𝑜𝑔 (1 − 𝑥)
