Mode of Delivery

This course will be delivered remotely which means that there will be a combination of
generally asynchronous (on- demand but time bound tasks UNC LMS, Facebook Messenger) and
strategically planned synchronous sessions (live online meetings thru ZOOM/Google Meet).

The College of Arts and Sciences uses the Blackboard as a learning management system.
This means that all instructions, study guides, learning materials, discussion forums, and
assignment submissions will be done through the said platform. All course announcements or
updates will be posted in the Blackboard, so please check our course site regularly.

A regular once a week synchronous session with you, mainly for consultations,
clarifications, and monitoring purposes will be conducted. This will be conducted via
Zoom/Google Meet following the schedule below:

Section Day Time Zoom/Google Meet Details

Meeting ID: 956 2640 0172

In a face-to-face mode of delivery, we meet during class hours at an assigned room. That
has changed in a remote set up. Instead of meeting every week at a pre-assigned time and place,
a large portion of your work will involve independent study tasks. This means you will need to
pace yourself, direct your own learning experience, be disciplined in managing your time, and
target to complete assignments on or before the due date.

Every week, we designed a Study Guide which provides details on how you should engage
with the core topic and whether this will be supported by a live meeting via Zoom. The
lesson/topic for each week is designed following the UNC outcome-based education delivery
format. You must view these study guides at the start of the week to give you clarity of what lies
ahead and what is expected of you during the week.

STUDENTS’ REQUIRED SKILLS IN A DISTANCE LEARNING MODE

Distance learning covering both flexible tech-driven and printed modular
modalities may sound so wonderful that some of you may start with an unrealistic vision.
In reality, these learning modalities require just as much, if not more, time, energy,
motivation and discipline as traditional classroom courses. So, it is imperative that you
possess specific skills and apply learning strategies to be successful in these learning
modalities.

To better equip you for distance learning, it is highly recommended that you take
and complete a Coursera course- MINDSHIFT: Break Through Obstacles to Learning and
Discover Your Hidden Potential. Mindshift teaches the essentials of online learning. It

7
provides practical insights from science and certain mental tools so you can learn and do
more—far more—than you might have ever dreamed!

You can avail this course as a free course, which means no certificate will be
provided to you after completion. However, the skills and learning strategies that you
will gain are helpful in your university journey.

Aside from the Coursera course, we have the summary of skills and learning
strategies that will surely help you in this distance learning mode: I would like you to
carefully read the list and apply these in all your courses.

1. Persistence
Persistence is perhaps the biggest key to succeed in distance learning. This means that you
should have the willingness to tolerate technical problems, initiative to seek help when needed,
discipline to work daily on every class, and motivation to persist through challenges.

You should understand that you will run into challenges, but keep trying and ask for help. You have to
set up a manageable study schedule and stick to it. You are expected to log in and make progress
every day. Have that discipline, stick to your schedules even after the novelty of going to distance
learning starts to wear off! Keep going! Your daily little progress when sums up will be surely of
significant value at the end of this course.

2. Effective Time-Management Skills

Next, time management. You must be able to manage your time well. This flexibility is one of the great
benefits of distance learning. But, it can also be a drawback if you procrastinate, unable to stick to a
routine study schedule, or is not able to complete assignments without daily reminders from your
teacher.
Effective time-management skills don't just happen. You have to learn this by practice. Once you do,
you will benefit from it throughout your life. So, follow the tips below to develop yours:

● You are encouraged to review the syllabus for each of the courses. You must develop a
comprehensive plan for completing the course requirements and assessments.
● Make a daily "To Do" list. And have fun checking things off the list as you complete them.

It takes time to develop good habits. But, at the end, you will surely gain satisfaction from being well-
organized and in accomplishing your tasks.

3. Effective and Appropriate Communication Skills

Another is about communication. This skill is vital in distance learning because you must seek help
when you need it. We, your teachers, are willing to help you, but we are unable to pick up on non-
verbal cues, such as a look of confusion on your face. You are advised to follow these tips:

● Use the tools provided by your courses as channels for communication. Our school and your
program provide several ways for us to communicate. These might include e-mail, discussion
groups, chat room office hours, cell phones, and even text messaging. We want to help you
to succeed in your classes and will surely answer your questions.

8
You may feel awkward to talk with your teachers this way, but these channels aim to bridge
the communication gaps in distance learning. So, go ahead and see the channels specified in
this course.

● Use appropriate style and language for school. When communicating with your teachers and
other staff, you should write in full, grammatically correct sentences and with a respectful
tone. While many of you are used to a very informal style of writing in chat rooms, blogs, text
messages, and so forth, for academic training in UNC along English Immersive Environment
(EIE), you are encouraged to be mindful of your language and sentence construction.

Because of the distance, it's tempting for some of you to say things out of anger or frustration that
you would never say to your teacher in person. We, your teachers in distance learning are both
professionals and persons. We expect to be treated with respect and courtesy in the same way that
you do in a physical classroom; and with persons whom you encounter every day like your family.

Let us always remember the UNC Core Value: We Respect Each Other and Work as a Team.

4. Basic Technical Skills

The fourth skill is about technology. You as learners need basic technical skills to succeed. These
include your ability to create new documents, use a word processing program, navigate the internet
and the learning management system, and download software and files. We will have an orientation
on how to use the learning management system and other online tools.

If you lack basic computer skills, we are encouraging you to find an online tutorial and learn from
there. You may also want to check the UNC’s main website for its hardware and software
requirements to see the compatibility of your own gadgets

5. Reading and Writing Skills

Another is about reading and writing as the main ways to communicate in distance learning mode.
Although some hard copies of textbooks might be required, you should be comfortable reading a lot
of documents on a computer screen and able to type.

Though some tests and quizzes have multiple choice questions, many of your assignments will involve
writing short or long answers. So appreciate these learning activities to improve your writing skills.

6. Motivation and Independence

The sixth skills are about motivation and independence. To be successful, you must want to succeed.
Distance learning requires independence, internal motivation, responsibility, and a certain level of
maturity.

Kindly reflect on these questions:

What are your reasons for attending school?
Are you determined and self-motivated to succeed in school?

Your answers are worthwhile reasons to work hard in school. In the future, it will give you a greater
level of personal satisfaction with your career. Perhaps it would be simply a personal pride in your
accomplishments.

9
7. A Good Study Environment
The last but not the least is having a good study environment. This is a critical factor in distance
learning. Refer to the helpful tips below:

● Get some peace and quiet. You will need a quiet place to work without distractions from
things like television, family, or roommates.
● Avoid games. Consider uninstalling any computer games to avoid temptation. Or keep the
games on a different computer in the house.
● Turn off mobile phone devices. Let your friends and family members know the hours that
you will be "at" school.
● Beware surfing the black hole of the Internet. It is easy to lose track of the time as you wander
from site to site.
● Consider ergonomics. Adjust the height of your chair, keyboard, and screen so that you will
be comfortable. Forearms and thighs should be level and parallel to the floor. Wrists should
not be bent while typing.
● Set up good lighting and comfortable seating. Lighting in the room should be at least as bright
as the computer screen to avoid eye strain.

Go back to the above list from time to time to be reminded of helpful tips to succeed in distance
learning or probably in life in general.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING SYSTEM

The following shows a summary of the different assessments that we will be conducting in
relation to the course outcomes. These assessments intend to measure whether you have reached
the expectations of the course through the different lessons and learning activities that we will
have in the entire delivery of the course:

A formative assessment is an “assessment for learning”. It intends to determine what your

learning needs are and what interventions are needed to meet your learning needs and improve
your competencies and skills. A summative assessment is an “assessment of learning”. It intends
to measure whether you have already achieved the expected outcomes of the course.

THE UNIVERSITY OF NUEVA CACERES: A VISION BECOMES A REALITY . . . ONE MAN’S GIFT
TO BICOLANDIA

In 1948 the Philippines had not yet fully recovered from the ravages of the Second World
War. The economy had just started perking up, but Naga, the center of culture, religion, education
and commerce in Bicol, was fast recovering economically; and rehabilitation of the structures
destroyed by American bombers was proceeding at a steady rate. In fact the capital town of
Camarines Sur was on the verge of becoming a city.

Dr. Jaime Hernandez had just resigned from his position as Secretary of Finance following
the victory of the Liberal Party. He had rendered splendid and exemplary service to his country
in Manila and in America before, during and after the war years. Now he had come back home to
Camarines Sur. He felt that it was time for him to do something worthwhile for the place where
he was born and had spent his early years.

He organized the Bicol Electric Company and took over the franchise of Meralco to supply
electricity to Naga and its environs. Dr. Hernandez kept on thinking of how he could be of greater
service to his fellow Bicolanos, and it did not take him long to realize that the best way was by
helping the hundreds of talented Bicolano students who could not afford to goto the colleges and
universities in Manila and Quezon City for further studies. He was convinced that the progress of
the region was dependent on the availability of college-educated men and women who could
provide the expertise and management skills needed to spur progress in Bicolandia.

So he gathered a group of friends, Atty. Edmundo Cea, Atty. Juan F. Triviño, Atty.
Buenaventura Blancaflor, and his son-in-law, Atty. Antonio M. Sison and broached to them his
idea. During the brainstorming that followed, they arrived at a tentative agreement to establish
a college in Naga and to name it the Nueva Caceres Colleges.

They chose the name to perpetuate the name given by Captain Pedro de Chavez to the
riverbank Spanish settlement adjacent to the native barangay, Naga. Chavez had chosen the name
to honor the second Spanish Governor General, Francisco de Sande (1575-1580), who came from
the city of Caceres in Spain.

In February 1948, Dr. Hernandez invited some prominent Bicolanos to join him as
incorporators of the new college. On May 9, 1948, they signed the incorporation papers to be
submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission. The signatories were Dr. Hernandez, Atty.
Jaime Reyes, Ambassador Jose Fuentebella, Atty. Edmundo Cea, Atty. Buenaventura Blancaflor,
Atty. Juan F. Triviño, Atty. Antonio M. Sison, Atty. Manuel Abella, and Dr. Domingo Abella. The SEC
approved the incorporation on May 18, 1948. Dr. Hernandez became the President of the first
NCC Board of Trustees; and the members were Atty. Triviño, Atty. Reyes, Dr. M. Abella and Atty.
Blancaflor.

34
The NCC officially started operations on July 1, 1948. The courses initially offered were
Liberal Arts, Commerce, Education, and High School. There was a total enrollment of 958
students. In the ensuing years, additional courses were opened: Elementary in 1949, Law in 1951,
Graduate in 1953, Engineering in 1954, Nursing in 1955, Secretarial in 1955, and Kindergarten
in 1993.

Classes in the newly opened Nueva Caceres Colleges were first held in the rented Flordeliza
Building fronting the public kiosk (now Plaza Quezon) and in the Governor Andres Hernandez
Residence along Burgos Street on the lot now occupied by Grand Imperial Plaza.

In September 1951, the college administration headed by Dr. Jaime Hernandez, upon the
strong recommendation of Atty. Antonio M. Sison, acquired the Rey property just across the
street from the old school site. Many people were doubtful of the feasibility of utilizing the new
site, a marshy area with zacate and other weeds growing up to four feet tall. Almost all year round
it was flooded with stagnant water up to three feet deep or more such that even carabaos had to
swim not walk through it.

On July 11, 1952, Most Rev. Pedro P. Santos, Archbishop of Caceres blessed the new campus
and the first two buildings, Dato Hall and Alba Hall. Other buildings completed later were the
Main Library, the University Chapel which was a project of Doña Anita Hernandez, the High
School Building, the Elementary Building, the Sports Palace, the Science Building, the Nurses
Home and the Engineering Building. The main building, the Dr. Jaime Hernandez Hall, was blessed
and inaugurated on February 14, 1973.

Under the leadership of UNC second President, Dr. Dolores H. Sison, an infrastructure
building program aimed at further modernizing the institution was completed. Constructed were
the new Chapel of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, a three-storey AMS Building, a three-storey Science
Building, a two-storey building which replaced the Alba Hall and a four-storey DHS building
which replaced Dato Hall. The UNC Sports Palace was likewise renovated.

After five years of existence, the Nueva Caceres Colleges attained university status on
December 15, 1954 as the University of Nueva Caceres. The four academic departments in 1948
have now grown to nine departments that offer courses leading to Doctor of Philosophy, Ed. D. in
Behavioral Management, Master of Arts in English, Master of Arts in Education, Master of Arts in
Teaching Mathematics, Master of Science in Environmental Science, Master in Business
Administration, Master in Public Administration, Master in Management, Master of Arts in

35
high school, elementary, early childhood education and review classes for the Bar, CPA,
Engineering, Nursing, and Teacher’s Licensure Examinations, as well as other short-term courses.

During the last fifty years, the University of Nueva Caceres has produced 154 topnotchers
in government Bar and Board examinations: Bar – 9; CPA – 19; Civil Engineering – 31; Mechanical
Engineering – 21; Electrical Engineering – 1, Registered Master Electrician – 3, Electronics &
Communications Engineering – 1; Junior Geodetic Engineering – 31; Chemical Engineering and
Chemist – 2; Licensure Examination for Teachers – 3; Licensure Examination for Librarians – 1;
Master Plumbers – 6 and Nursing – 26. This hefty collection of “golds” speaks well of the quality
of instruction in the UNC. Further evidence of this is shown by the thousands of UNC graduates
who are now professionals or who occupy responsible positions in the government and in the
private sector.

Nobody has served the University of Nueva Caceres longer and with more dedication
than its immediate past president, the late Dr. Dolores H. Sison, a cum laude graduate of the
Philippine Women’s University, where she earned her A.B. and B.S.E. degrees. From Columbia
University in New York City, she earned her M.A. in Administration of Higher Education degree.
She was intimately involved in the affairs of the University from its very beginnings as the Nueva
Caceres Colleges. She used to remember with nostalgia how as chief financial officer occupying
a small room under the stairs of the Gov. Hernandez Residence, she sometimes had to resort to
praying and had to use all her initiative in order to get enough funds to pay the teachers and
employees on time. Her obsession was to continually prepare the UNC for the challenges of the
twenty-first century. She also introduced and implemented new programs and courses to keep
abreast with the demands of global education. She was ably assisted during her presidency by Dr.
Lourdes S. Anonas, Executive Vice President; Mr. Jaime J. Hernandez, Jr., Vice President for
Administration, Mrs. Erlinda H. Ravanera, and Vice President for Finance; and Mr. Jesus J.
Hernandez, Vice President for Student and External Affairs.

With the multitude of successful alumni that UNC has produced, it had attracted reputable
industries to invest in it. However, the school administration meticulously and critically chose
the best that embodies the vision of the Founder, Dr. Jaime Hernandez. And so, the marriage
between the academe and the industry happened with UNC and Ayala Education, Inc. (AEI). The
two are one in believing that quality but affordable education is possible. With the rapid
globalization that is happening, a revolutionary innovation dawned in UNC.

The torch of knowledge that illuminates the way of the Bicolano youth became brighter
with the union of the academic icon, UNC, and the pioneering conglomerate, Ayala Corporation,
through AEI. The third President, Alfredo I. Ayala, hailed UNC as the Flagship University of AEI
bannering the blazing power of 1+1=3 which means that the combination of the two will yield
extraordinary positive outcomes for the Bicol Region and the country as a whole.

Gone are the days when skills mismatch problems get in the way of the young learners.
With curricula that are tailored fit to the needs of the industry, the graduates are trained to
address the demands of compelling careers. Communicative English and employability
reinforced by technology-based instruction are the distinct features that make UNC unique and
its graduates outstanding.

Alfredo I. Ayala, who stepped down last July 30, 2018, was replaced by Dr. Fay Lea Patria
M. Lauraya, the 4th president of the university. The investiture of Dr. Lauraya was celebrated on

36
March 7, 2019 at the UNC Sports Palace. Her goal is for UNC not just to be the first, but to become
the number one university in the Bicol Region.

Now running the University is its fourth president Dr. Fay Lea Patria M. Lauraya, with the
able assistance of Dr. Nora Elizabeth F. Maniquiz, Vice President for Academic Affairs; Engr. Leon
B. Palmiano, IV, Vice President for Administration; Dr. Armin A. Fullante, Assistant Vice President
for Student Affairs and Services; Dr. Romeo M. Sumayo Jr., Dean, School of Graduate Studies; Mr.
Kenjie A. Jimenea; Mrs. Cerila C. Sanchez, Dean, College of Business and Accountancy; Mrs. Agnes
T. Reyes, Dean, College of Computer Studies; Ms. Shirlene S. Esplana, Dean, College of Criminal
Justice Education; Dr. Lilly A. Vidal, Dean, College of Education; Engr. Christine C. Bautista, Dean,
College of Engineering & Architecture; Atty. Antonio C. Rivero, Dean, College of Law; and Mrs.
Teresita B. Pambid, Dean, College of Nursing, Mr. Ronnie V. Castro, Principal, Junior High School;
Mrs. Nelia E. San Jose, Principal, Senior High School and Dr. Vivian B. Fortuno, Principal,
Elementary.

The phenomenal growth and progress of the University of Nueva Caceres is a story of
love, dedication and sacrifice of people who gave a substantial part of the best years of their lives
for the cause of education and service to the welfare of the people of the region especially the
youth. Many of the leading personalities in this great adventure are gone but the imprint and
spirit of their work are forever etched in the annals of the University of Nueva Caceres.

Education is an important strategic focus for Ayala. There is strong global demand for
Filipino talent and our vision is to deliver high quality, affordable education that can
significantly enhance the employability of our graduates.”

- Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala Ayala's Chairman and CEO

“Realizing that Bicol Region needed an educational institution which will provide an
opportunity for higher learning at relatively cheaper cost and with a quality equal if not better than
those in the greater Manila, considered the center of learning, I consider it a rare challenge to be of
service to the region by organizing a school that will meet those needs. By doing so, my co-organizers
and I believed that we were contributing to the social, political, economic and cultural upliftment of
the region.”

-Dr.Jaime Hernandez UNC Founder

“COLOR IT RED & GRAY”

Introduction

Students reminisce about their days in school and its heart-warming when the students’
memories encompass their fondness, pride and love they gave and obtained from the school
itself. This speaks of the bond that exists between the students and the school which spell the
difference between students being merely at a school and being at our school.

This can be attributed to school spirit!

37
The importance of school spirit is that there is mutual acknowledgement from both the students
and the school of how important they are in each other’s life not for material reasons but for the
pursuit of their respective higher goals.

It's a driving force that makes the students and even employees not only unite in supportive
behavior towards the school but also differentiates them from other institutions.

The school spirit can be a driver to students’ pride in representing the school in competitions,
searches and tournaments, giving them passion and reason to hold on to success.

The school spirit momentum can continue even beyond school. A seemingly ethnocentric feeling
over the school encourages graduates of even several years to go back and reacquaint with the
school professors and staff and even help out by sharing with some of its concerns.

The school spirit can be manifested through the school color.

Throughout the years, UNC has adopted Red and Grey as its colors, bannering all the University’s
activities, projects and success along with its motto Non Scholae Sed Vitae. The two colors ignited
fire, enthusiasm and passion of the students and of the personnel as they journey in all the phases
of the life of the school.

While Red is associated with fire, strength and passion, such volatile emotions are balanced by
the color Gray that is solid, stable and creates a sense of calm and composure, relief from a chaotic
world. Such a combination of colors has guided the path of the UNCEANS in the highs and lows
that the University goes through. They are the hues that witness and celebrate with the
community in the numerous successes and triumphs that the University experiences. They are
also the vivid sights that comfort and draw together the school community in the travails and
tribulations that cross its way.

Objectives:

1. Use and involve the University colors in the celebration of University events

2. Create a culture of respect to symbols of the University

3. Bring awareness of the significance of the University colors through classroom teaching and
learning activities

Activities

1. Adopting the acronym of RED and GRAY

R - ready G - Greyhound for a

E - empowered and R - Resilient

D - driven A - Active and

Y - Yielding Community

38
2. Color one’s facebook wall Red & Gray

Splashing gaily one’s fb wall with colors red and gray on a designated day

3. Embodying as part of the teaching and learning activities the colors Red and Gray

This can be done during classroom activity devoting a few minutes of the time any activity
that has something to do with the University colors.

4. Declaring every 1st Wednesday of the month as Red and Gray Day

This day can be made meaningful by enjoining the University community to wear the
colors or display them in the offices.

Self- reflection

1. As a member of the University community, have I done something to preserve the significance
and meaning of the colors?

2. Have I used the colors with respect?

3. Am I living up to the meaning behind the colors?

4. Have I used them with pride?

Brief History of the UNC Library

The University of Nueva Caceres Library is one of the oldest buildings in the university.
The first two buildings in the university were the Dato Hall and Alba Hall which were inaugurated
on July 11, 1952. By early 1952 almost half of the campus was filled up and buildings began to
rise. The Main Library, University Chapel, the High School and Elementary Buildings, the Sports
Palace, the Old Science Building, the Nurses Home, the Engineering Building were among the first
buildings.
The Main Library serves the College of Business and Accountancy, College of Education,
College of Arts and Sciences, Computer Studies and College of Nursing until 2012 before its
renovation.
In 2012, the Main Library became one of the focus of the campus modernization projects
under the leadership of Vice President for Administration Dr. Eduardo H. Sison. By 2013, the
library’s modernization included improvement of facilities, services, collection and staffing which
addressed the recommendations of CHED, PACUCOA and PRC. It was in the same year that the
library of the College of Law, Graduate School, Engineering and Architecture, High School and
Elementary were housed in one building, the newly renovated Main Library became a centralized
University Library often called E-Library. On April 11, 2014 these facilities were blessed to serve
the academe of the whole institution. The University Library surpassed the many accreditations
by CHED, PACUCOA and PRC even the level 3 PACUCOA accreditation of Business Administration,
Master of Arts in Education and Master of Business Administration
On July 11, 2019, the new building of UNC was inaugurated. It is where the new College
of Law Library was transferred to house a bigger student population.

(Transcribed from the Tingraw Video PResentation of VPAA Romy)

1. Student Skills Progress Tracking System – Assess individual skills and

capability through Psychometric Assessments. Results are analyzed vis a vis
the UNC Graduate Attributes (Excellent Communicator, Creative Leader,
Ethical Citizen, Lifelong Learner - EXcEL). Tracking of student progress along
these attributes is needed because the goal of UNC is for every UNCean
graduate to EXcEL.
2. Student Skills Summit – a celebration and showcasing of accomplishments of
the students as a gift to the UNCean parents.
3. English Immersive Environment (EIE) – all students are provided every
opportunity in and out of the classroom to acquire a certain level of language
competence. Student language proficiency is assessed every year and progress
is reported to the program heads as inputs to curriculum enhancement and
continuous development.
4. Multi Qualification Program (MQUAP) – The core academic programs are re-
engineered to embed certifications of skills needed by the industry and
employers. This makes the curricula contextualized and relevant. It does not
only provide the students with theoretical knowledge but also practical skills
and experience which are recognized and certified by the employers. These
certifications allow students to be employed even before graduation, enabling
them to earn while pursuing their respective degrees. Empowering students
in a very practical form, armed with multi-qualifications, students can manage
to find jobs and earn a living, this way they are empowered to help their
families economically speaking.

UNC Career Pathway Framework

by Career Center

I.Rationale
One of the success indicators articulated by the University of
Nueva Caceres through its future-ready outcome-based education is the
employability of the graduates. For the past years, there have been
several initiatives crafted and implemented to prepare the graduates to
be ready in the world of work; however, there was no specific
framework that embodies all these programs which will directly impact
the University as a whole. Thus, this policy will serve as a guide that
connects all the initiatives into one framework, monitor its progress and
measure to check its impact to the end goal - the compelling careers of
the graduates. To ensure that these students are future-ready

40
(makatapos), work-ready (magkatrabaho) and life-ready
(magtagumpay), the UNC Career Pathway Framework was articulated.

II.General Policy

A. There are three (3) things that encapsulates the UNC Career Pathway
Framework - engage, educate and employ. The three (3) E’s will
serve as the game plan, a strategy that will be the anchor of all the
career-related programs and services.
B. The first part of the plan is to engage the students. It means that
the students will be profiled. By profiling the students, we will
understand the current status and the gap between where they are
and what they want in the future. This will serve as an input in
understanding holistically the students and their goals. The career
plan will now be based on their profile and career goals. The University
can now create a “picture” of who its students are and feed this
information in the planning process of developing the career of the
students.
C. The second part is to educate the students. By educating, it is the
process where all the programs and services that will develop the
competencies of the students will be implemented and track its
progress to nurture and achieve their dreams. Through partnerships,
collaborations and linkages with industry, academe and government,
the current and future trends will be integrated in the programs and
services of the University. Through the various activities, updates on
labor market trends, competency requirements, hard-to-fill and
demanded-skills, job fitness, and the likes will be integrated. This led
to the preparation of the graduates to be highly employable
considering its industry-based competencies that were acquired and
honed while in the University.
D. The last part is a measure if all the preparations are appropriate and
successful if the graduates are considered high potential and preferred
by the industry to be part of their esteemed organization - to be
employed. The end goal of all these efforts is the compelling careers
of the graduates. This is a clear indication that the University was
able to fulfil its promise - future-ready (makatapos), work-ready
(magkatrabaho) and as anchored to its motto - not of school but
of life, is to be life-ready (magtagumpay).

41
E. In context, once students are engaged, the University will educate
them based on their profile and to measure that we are successful in
educating them is that they will be employed.

Module 4: Activities and Worksheet

“My Greyhound Journey”

Introduction

“We nurture dreams” from the moment our students decided to become UNCean and
beyond. However it is a reality that adjustment is a crucial step to attain success among college
freshmen. Psychology refers to it as the behavioral process of balancing conflicting needs, or
needs challenged by obstacles in the environment. Sometimes, the pressures to succeed in
college, get a great job and achieve in academics were pervasive concerns of these students
(Santrock, 1996). Thus, they need a nurturing guide to aid them in their adaptation process.

This module is a simulated road-map containing 5 phases/stages that will provide the
newcomers an avenue for acquisition of knowledge and skills in coping with college transition
through holistic and experiential approach.

This consists of worksheets, guide questions for reflections, and survey

checklists/inventories to better understand the process.

Objectives

1. Gain awareness of the different phases an individual may go through in adjustment

process
2. Acquire knowledge and coping skills in managing the natural circumstances in college
transition.
3. Plan ways to gain resilience and adaptability in the university.

Flow of activity

First Journey (Phase1) – Fascination with New Environment (Honeymoon/Fascination

Stage)

This is a time of euphoria as students anticipate intellectual excitement and a satisfying

social life. Students feel ready to experience all that campus life has to offer.

Objective of Activity: Identify the reasons that motivate them to study in UNC.

Unfinished Sentence: I chose to study in UNC because _______________________________

Second Journey(Phase 2) – End of the Honeymoon (Initiation Stage). In this period students
realize that college life consists of hard work, frustrations and disappointment. At this
point, students often experience feelings of homesickness. Personal academic and socio-
emotional issues arise.

42
Objective of Activity: Cite the adjustment difficulties they encounter.

Unfinished Sentence: The college adjustment difficulties that I encounter are: ___________

Third Journey (Phase3 )– Primitive Coping Behavior (Regulation Stage)

This time the student is learning their ways to handle the changes in their lifestyles and
is expanding their circle of friends. Their self-confidence increases, they participate in
more activities, and they enjoy campus life.

Objective of Activity: Enumerate the effective coping strategy the students use to manage
difficulties.

Unfinished Sentence: I personally cope or manage the said adjustment difficulties by ____

Fourth Journey (Phase 4)- Hitting the Bottom (Tribulation Stage)

This is crunch time as papers, projects, and tests flow into a huge ball-of'-stress. Classes
get harder, financial problems increase, deadlines of requirements pile up and others,
causing minor panic attacks. In this period, transferring schools closer to home, changing
course, dropping the classes or stopping schooling become part of the student’s options.

Objective of Activity: Acquire stress-management strategies in handling deeper issues in college

life.

Unfinished Sentence: The following activities, programs and events help a lot when I am under
stress _________.

Fifth Journey (Phase 5): Putting it all together (Adaptation)

The time when the students notice that classes, residence life, and social activities have
come together into a well- integrated lifestyle. Students are more confident, better able
to make decisions, and aware of opportunities for personal and intellectual growth.

Objective of Activity: Gather “wish-list” data or needs-assessment of future programs or activities

the university or the center may conduct for the student.

Unfinished Sentence: I hope UNC will provide/conduct activities that will develop my __________

B. WORKSHEET

Module 5: Reading Materials

Flexible Learning and Education 4.0

To prepare future graduates for work, universities must align the teaching and learning
process with technological advancements. When technology began to encroach the
education process and both teachers and students utilize technology in basic ways, Education
2.0 came into the fore. As this technology advanced with the coming of the user-generated
Internet, Education 3.0 was formed.

Now, more than ever, students have easy access to information due to advancements
in information technology. They have the option to learn virtually and communicate with their
teachers and classmates using different platforms. This has encouraged the development of
more personalized learning. This has also led to independent learning and unique approaches
to study. We are now in the new phase of learning, Education 4.0.

What is Education 4.0?

Education 4.0 is the desired approach to learning that aligns itself with the emerging
fourth industrial revolution. This industrial revolution focuses on smart technology, artificial
intelligence and robotics; all of which now impact our everyday lives. It has the following
features:

• It will cater to the needs of Industry 4.0 enabling workforce and machines
to align to explore new possibilities.
• It will deploy the potential of digital technology, open-source content
and personalized data of this globally connected and tech-driven world.

44
• It will create a blueprint for the future of learning- from school-based
learning to learning at the workplace.

It will also have the following trends in the evolution of learning such as:

1. Accelerate Remote Learning

Education 4.0 will enable learning anytime, anywhere as the e-learning
tools and applications will provide opportunities for remote, self-paced
learning.
2. Personalized Learning
Education 4.0 will also enable personalized learning for students
depending on their capabilities. This implies that there will be
individual learning processes for each student. It will surely have a
positive impact as it will enable students to learn at their pace. This will
result in a better understanding of the concepts and an overall better
result.
3. Choice of Educational Tools
Part of Education 4.0 will be the technology devices used by students
to gain education. The students will be able to choose the tools and
techniques through which they want to acquire the knowledge.
4. Project-based Learning
The students of today will need to adapt to project-based learning and
working styles. Thus, students must be acquainted with project-
based learning during high school education. This part of 4.0 will teach
them organizational skills, and collaborative skills, that they can further
use in their academic careers as well as employment.
5. Field-specific Experience
There is more emphasis on imparting field-specific knowledge to the
students within the existing courses. This means that schools will now
provide more opportunities for students to obtain real-world skills that
are relevant to the prospective job opportunities.
6. Data Analysis
Computers will also be used for all kinds of statistical analysis-
describing and analyzing data for predicting future trends. Education
4.0 will train students to apply theoretical knowledge and use human
resources to examine the patterns and predict trends.

7. Changes in Examination Pattern and Assessment

This means that the assessments, as part of Education 4.0 will not be
solely based on the current examination patterns. It will be done by
analyzing their learning journey through practical and experiential
learning-based projects or field work.

45
Flexible Learning and Education 4.0

Aligning with Education 4.0, Flexible Learning shifts the delivery of education. From
the usual classroom learning to learning where the learner can learn anytime, anywhere at
his own pace. The rise in online self-paced learning puts the traditional education system on
the sidelines. Leaders in higher education are pacing up with the change by adopting
immersive experiences and making education more flexible and relevant.

Before the global outbreak of Covid-19, many institutions were already laying the
groundwork for a new approach to education. Many are investing in new technology to deliver
educational experiences to students and to respond to the future needs of the industry.

In UNC, our Flexible Learning delivery is a response to Education 4.0. We are

preparing our graduates for the future workforce of the 4IR. The self-paced learning of our
students makes them active participants in the learning process, develop their digital skills
and become lifelong learners. In the University, we produce graduates who are future-ready.
