FINAL EXAMINATIONS
SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION (SLA)
Summer 2021

NAME: MA ALELIE B. NAVARRO Date: August 31, 2021

Directions. Read each of the question and choose five (5) to answer. Please submit in
PDF your examination paper.
1. Give the importance of language acquisition – learning the first language and the
second language.

Language acquisition is very important and relevant for every child because
this is the foundation of their growth and development. The first language, or mother
tongue as we call it here in the Philippines, is the language spoken at home before a
child attends school. Research has shown and proven that having a strong foundation
or successfully achieving fluency of the first language makes acquiring a second one
easier. Children who has gained enough vocabulary and articulacy in their first
language, develop better literacy skills in other languages that they subsequently learn.

Second language is different from that of the mother tongue. Second language
allows children to learn new grammar and vocabulary rules. It allows them to train
their memory to remember new words, make connections between them, and use them
in contextual situations. Moreover, learning a second language will is another way of
exercising their brains. In learning new skill such as acquiring a second language, the
more that their brains’ functions work.

2. Discuss how crucial is SLA in a child’s formative years specially during this
pandemic?

Because of this pandemic, schools, recreational parks, malls and other social
venues where children can interact and build other relationships are not made
available for them. Their exposure to other people is very limited and this is very
challenging on their part and for their parents as well, most especially those who are
on their formative years. They are being robbed off on the experiences they could have
that will help them achieve their needed skills as growing children.
Second Language acquisition is very crucial in child’s formative years
especially during this pandemic, in a way that, it is very disadvantageous on their end.
They are stuck in their houses; online learning class is also very limited for them. And
if their parents or guardians are not creative enough to create or prepare activities that
will help them build knowledge on second language acquisition could really affect them
very hard. They may or may not have the enough skills and knowledge which they will
be needing for the later years of their life.

3. Compare andcontrast the difference between first and second language

acquisition using Venn Diagram.

4. Cite an example on how intrinsic and extrinsic factors affect SLA.

For intrinsic motivation, I will make myself as an example. I was an OFW for 7
years in Kuwait and as a foreign teacher in an Arabic-speaking country, I was
fundamentally motivated to at least learn basic words and phrases of the Arabic
language. My motivation then was that, it will make my life a little easier. Especially
when I go out and I have to ask for directions or need help. Another thing is that when
I interact with my fellow teachers and other staff in the school, I can express my feeling
and opinions and with that, I did have a harmonious relationship with them and even
build some friendship with them.

For extrinsic motivation, my very example is my husband is an OFW as well.

He is an Interior Designer for a company based in the UAE. His bosses, workmates are
all Indian. Thus, he had to really learn their language. Now, he is fluent in speaking
the Hindi language and this made him very indispensable in their company. This is an
added skills for him and he is an asset in their company because he can speak to their
clients alone.

5. What strategies are appropriate to develop a child’s linguistic and

communicative competencies during the pandemic?
The Covid-19 pandemic has brought unprecedented challenges to language and
literacy learning this past year. It has caused teachers and students to abandon their
physical classrooms and shifted into the asynchronous type of learning. In the
Philippines, learning is made available using the modular and/or online form. While
no one is exempted from this dilemma, from pre-school to tertiary level, there are still
creative and appropriate strategies for children to develop their linguistic and
communicative competencies during these crucial times. Although, the experience may
not be as holistic if they were in a classroom set-up, children will still be able to gain
the foundational skills they need.

Parents, guardians or caregivers may emphasize the importance of

maintaining a reading routine through having their children read at the same time
every day. In my case, I have a 3-year old nephew – we have set the routine of reading
and sounding letters, reading books before he goes to sleep. So everytime he goes to
bed, he would choose on his own the books and flashcards we will be reading.

During the day, we have play time and a designated hour for watching YouTube
videos and then while watching or playing, we would interact by asking questions such
as “What are you watching?”, “What are they doing?”, “Do you like what are you
watching?”, “What are their names?” In this way, my nephew may see it as a viewing
time or free time but for us his caregivers, this is a way to instill linguistic and
communicative competencies.

There are many things that can be found in the internet to at least fill in the gaps
of what children are missing when it comes to developing the basic skills they need.
Parents and guardians need to be creative as well. Using of picture words, flashcards,
wall charts, watching videos of the characters they like are only few of the appropriate
strategies that can be given as activities for them.

Learning through play is one of the most proper and fitting approach that can
be used for them. Through play they will not be forced to do something that they are
not prepared or comfortable to do and this will help them not to hate learning or scared
of going to school when the time comes that they need to go.
