SHAROT
In this modern age, a lot of people in this generation have been highly associated
with various bad habits that impede their maximum capacity to operate with several
tasks and goals. Procrastination is something that affects everyone, although some
individuals are better than others at overcoming it. When it comes to procrastination,
many Millennials have so many entertaining methods to pass the time, such as
watching TV, online video, Web surfing, or using a mobile phone, iPod, or Blackberry to
do unnecessary things aside from performing the assigned task intended for them. Lack
of self-discipline or self-control is not the primary cause of procrastination, but an
important compound. To be disciplined, one needs to have the correct type of
motivation to change their behavior and learn to maintain and work on positive habits.
When Tali Sharot talked about the three principles that we know truly drive
people's minds and behaviors, she was referring to social incentives, instant rewards,
and the value of other people's opinions. She was right when she said fear and danger
make it difficult for people to change their bad habits because it can decrease their
capacity to function properly and I can attest to that. When rewards are associated with
incentives and advantages rather than threats, people perform better. Instead of using
threats, a K9 dog handler utilizes treats and prizes to help a dog learn new skills and
tasks that come with being a K9. Similarly, instead of showing someone in the ICU with
such serious lung disease, the anti-smoking campaign could use images of a healthy
set of lungs or a happy family with a happy wife. Now going back, for those who are
prone to procrastination, instead of scaring themselves with the prospect of failing a
class if they make an effort in changing their behavior, it would be preferable to point out
the benefits of quitting procrastination, such as higher scores. Furthermore, in terms of
procrastination, I believe that rewarding oneself right away makes it simpler to keep
going and stick to a plan. As a bonus, emphasizing gains rather than losses might help
integrate one's behavior. As individuals see their efforts paying off, it serves as an
additional source of motivation. Overall, this would allow individuals to adhere to the
new changes with ease and eventually quit the bad behavior.
WANT TO LEARN BETTER? START MIND MAPPING BY HAZEL WAGNER
According to Hazel Wagner, Mind mapping is a way for the student to make and
take notes and allows those concepts to be incorporated into the memory, as it is by far
a working system of the mind. Similarly to Hazel Wagner’s experience, I also discovered
the concept of mind mapping recently. Although mind maps are similar in structure to
concept maps, it still differs on how topics are being simplified by focusing around a
single central key concept. And unlike concept maps, mind maps do not denote a
hierarchy of topics but rather show a relation of how one topic is connected. Mind
mapping is considered to be an effective way to study lengthy topics and diminishing
the problem of retaining them. Mind mapping also allows learners to retrieve various
information by visualizing the written map whenever one needs to retrieve such
information.
Upon incorporating mind mapping into my studies and life it amazes me how
such a technique allows me to maximize my learning. Mind Mapping is a tool that allows
learners to create comprehensive and creative notes filled with important concepts that
are incorporated within. To create a mind map a central theme must be established
which represents the whole idea of the concept. When a central idea has been
established, several associative concepts are now connected by curved lines to guide
the main concept over the subcategory concept. Such tools allow students to structure
different information and topics in a way that is more compatible with multiple learning
styles, such as visual and kinesthetic learning styles, and filter long texts into shorter
mind map topics, allowing students to absorb large amounts of information much faster
and easier. Mind mapping is also a great tool in facilitating learners that have known
learning difficulties like ADHD, dyslexia, and autism. In addition, it also increases the
comprehension and productivity of learners in every aspect of their life which makes it a
valuable study aid for students. In general, mind mapping helps users think through and
explore any idea, concept or problem, by helping individuals understand the
relationships and connections between ideas and concepts. As it facilitates the
communication of new ideas and thought processes, due to its organized form.
ART OF BEING YOURSELF BY CAROLINE McHUGH
Mastering the art of being yourself will make your life easier and much richer as
Caroline McHugh states in her talk as she explains why we must determine our inner
self in this world. Caroline speaks so passionately as she explains various things that
impede an individual from knowing themselves. She explained that for us to determine
our authentic self, we must be free from the perception and expectation that others have
for us. This is significantly true because as we grow old in this world, we gain various
roles, other than being a daughter and a student. As we go along with these perceptions
and expectations it forces us to play those roles and operate as if we are programmed
to do so, which robs us of our identity and happiness. The more we work on these roles,
the more it becomes more difficult for us to find joy in the things we do due to the
overpowering pressure that one has for us. Eventually, as pressure goes on it restrains
us from finding the inner beauty that we once saw when we were a child which makes it
hard for us to be authentic.
Being authentic is not an easy task to do and it is not about “just” being yourself.
Being authentic takes a lot of process, starting from removing all the restraints that
people’s opinion and perception has for us. It is hard to seek yourself and be fully aware
of your genuine self if the weight of other’s opinions and expectations are all blinding us
from seeking ourselves. One must be knowledgeable of how others see them and how
they fit in this world to filter out the things that are not necessary for cultivating a
genuine self. In addition, when one can be fully aware of who they are, they must be
brave enough to take new opportunities and quit several roles that were not that
significant in their life. In this way, an individual would be able to live out their genuine
values, morals, and other things that are seen as significant. Being and living oneself is
not only knowing your strength but also your weaknesses and vulnerabilities that will
allow a genuine need for both spiritual and personal development to happen. Being
authentic is about living our daily lives in full accord with what is real in the eyes of the
holder.
