Q1: Describe the major components of computer. Explain with short

notes on each.
Ans: Computer is made up of two major components i.e. Hardware
and software.
Hardware: The parts of computer which we can see, touch and feel
with our hands are known as hardware. Eg- Keyboard, Mouse,
Printer etc.
Software: The programs, or parts of computer which we cannot see,
feel or touch are termed as software Eg- Ms Word, Ms Excel,
Windows etc.
Q2: Write short notes on the following:
i) Motherboard (ii) PCI (iii)video card (iv) sound card (v) power
supply (vi)CPU (vii) Modem
Ans:
Motherboard:-motherboard is made up of hard plastic and is fixed in
the CPU cabinet. Mostly all the internal hardware are fixed on
motherboard.
PCI: Peripheral component Interconnect is a term used to describe a
common connection interface to attach computer peripherals to a
pc’s motherboard.
Video Card: It is used to generate video output to a display device
such as monitor, television or projector.
Sound Card: It allows the computer to send audio information to
audio devices like speakers, headphones etc.
Power Supply: Power supply unit provide the power needed for
each component to function.
CPU: Central Processing Unit also known as “The Processor” the
CPU is the brain of computer. It receives the user’s instruction from
the input devices, process it and sends processed data to output
devices.
Modem: Modem stands for Modulator-Demodulator. A modem is a
device that enables a computer to sends or receives data over
telephone lines.

Q3: What are different types of ports? Write two characteristics of

any 2 types.
Ans: Ports are following types-
1. Serial port
2. Parallel port
3. Ps/2 port
4. USB port
5. VGA port
6. Power connector
7. Firewire connector
8. HDMI port
9. Modem port
10. Ethernet Port
11. Audio port
12. DVI port
1 .Serial port: (i) It is used for external modems and old
computer mouse.
(ii) Data travels at 115 kbps
2.Parallel port: (i) Used for scanner and printer
(ii)25 pin model

Q4: Write short notes on any five input devices stating their uses and
advantages.
Ans:
1)Keyboard:-keyboard is most important input device used to input
data and instruction into a computer in the form of alphabet ,numbers
and symbols.
2)Mouse:-Mouse is most popular pointing device. It is cursor control
device.
3)Joystick:-it is also pointing device used to play computer games
and CAD.
4)Scanner:-it works more like photocopy machine. It is used to scan
information available on paper and sends it to computer.
5)OMR:-optical mark reader is used to recognise the type of mark
made by a pen or pencil to check the answer sheets of examinations
having multiple type of questions.

Q5:- What are different types of monitor and printer? Explain in

brief.
Ans.:- Types of monitor: - Monitors are of 2 types-
(i) CRT Monitor: - Cathode Ray Tube monitors are made up of
small picture elements called pixels. Most screens are capable of
displaying 80 characters of data horizontally and 25 lines vertically.
These monitors are big in size and consume high power.
(ii) Flat panel display monitor:- It refers to a type of video devices
that have reduced volume, weight, and power requirement in
comparison to the CRT.
Types of printers: - Printers are of two types-
(i) Impact printers: - These printers print the characters by striking
them on ribbon, which is then pressed on the paper.
(ii)Non-Impact Printers: these printers print the characters without
using the ribbon.

Q6: Write a short note on 3 storage devices, mentioning their

storage capacity and use.
Ans:-
1. Hard disk: The hard disk is a high capacity storage device. It is
the data centre of the computer. The documents and content that
a user creates and saves the software to operate the computer and
the applications like Word processor and Scratch are stored in
the hard disk.
2. CD-ROM: A CD-ROM is a storage device that can be read out
but not written to. It stands for Compact Disk-Read Only
Memory. CD-ROM disks are made of reflective material.
3. DVD: DVD stands for “Digital Versatile Disc.” A DVD is a
type of optical media used for storing digital data. It is the same
size as a CD, but has a larger storage capacity.
