Word Rootsis a uniquely designed and challenging workbook based on the word elements: roots, prefixes, and suffixes. Note that the roots used in this book originate from the Latin language— the foundation of much of our English language. Roots, prefixes, and suffixes are the building blocks upon which all words are formed. A thorough knowledge of these elements will greatly enhance one’s vocabulary and improve one’s understanding of otherwise unfamiliar words. For example, understanding the meaning of the roots struct, spect, {frag, nov, manu and script, would enable one to comprehend many words made from combinations of these elements, such as the following: fragment inscription prospect fragile ‘manuscript manual innovation _ destruction. construct, A single Latin root can be the basis for many words in the English language. The significance of this lies in the fact that with every new root learned, the resulting growth of one’s vocabulary can be truly astounding—and Word Roots provides the tools. Definitions of Root, Prefix, and Suffix A root is the element that gives the basic meaning of the word. In this book, the term root refers to the original Latin word. An English word may have two or more roots in it. Identifying these roots can help you to define a word you don’t know. A prefixis an element that is added to the beginning of a word. The prefix adds to or alters the ‘meaning of the basic word. For example, the prefix re means back, again. The root tract means drag, draw out, pull. re+ tract= retract to draw or pull back The prefix con means with or together con+ tract= contract to draw together or shrink A suffix is an element added to the end of a word. The suffix can define the word grammatically, giving some indication as to the part of speech a word is. Root: dur = harden, to last Suffixes: -able (able to be), -tion (state, quality, act) dur + able= durable having the quality of lasting (adjective) dur +ation = duration the length of time something lasts (noun) ‘Words such as convention and digression have both a prefix and a suffix joined to the root. ‘© 2002 Critical Thinking Books & Software * www. CriticalThinking, com + 800-458-4849 iii Woro Roots Levet A Book 1 How to Do the Activities The worksheets help the student to meet the following objectives: Given Latin elements and their definitions, the student will: 1.
